Breaking Free
I wake up to the sound of a heart monitor. I slowly open my eyes. Part of my lower arm is under a red sunlight generator. Clark is holding my hand. I watch Alex walk into the room. I cry out a little bit as she makes a small incision. I've never felt like this. I've never felt human.
She pulls a small disk out using tweezers before stitching the wound closed. Clark has a similar spot on his arm.
"Do you remember anything about the past five days? Maybe about the rescue?" He asks.
"No... I just remember being knocked out from behind and waking up here." I stare at the disk. "What happened?"
"Fury happened. He came in and staged an attack on the compound. I caught one of the twins, with a little help from Kara, but they already had you." Alex explains. "When your parents and I rescued you and Clark, we caught the other twin. The problem is that Mya and Miles have whatever is controlling them still in them. If we try to remove them, they wrap around the nearest major artery and break it. They would be dead in less than a day."
"Just like Insurgent." I whisper to myself.
"We're not staying here. Your parents, your aunt, your grandmother and I all agree. I'm finding a way to save my son and daughter, but they're not willing to help." Clark says in a hushed voice. "I just want to have my kids back. I want Lois to be able to have a daughter she can talk with and I want to be able to play catch with the son that was stolen from me."
"The Avengers will be on a mission tonight, so we can preform the surgery to remove the disks from Miles and Mya then. As soon as the wounds are stitched closed, we have to go." Alex finishes. I nod before getting off the table and taking my bag. Then, I get an idea.
"Is there anything in it that's exposed that we could fry?" I ask. They nod. "I can save them."
I walk into a room almost identical to the one I was in. I grab a water bottle and pour it on the exposed part of the device on Miles' collarbone. It emits smoke as I use one of Mya's daggers to pull it out. I repeat for Mya.
"You- you saved us?" Mya asks.
"Yeah. You deserve to live your lives. If you want that chance, pack a bag and get in the hallway." I reply as I leave the room. A few minutes later, everyone is at the door. Everyone is in their
"Stay strong, stay together, and don't stop." Alex says before Mom continues.
"We will be running to Midvale. From there, Eliza has allowed us to stay with her. The next night, we go to National City. James is willing to give amnesty to Mya and Miles." Mom finishes. She opens the door and leads the group through a broken part of the fence.
A jet lands on the roof. They aren't supposed to be back. Everyone starts running as what look like SHIELD agents in riot gear charge towards the fence. Agents loyal to the Avengers. I pull Mya and Miles behind me as I pick up the pace.
"Come on! We're almost out of the woods!" I shout. A black van sits in front of the trees. Everyone climbs in. I guess I should say almost everyone. I begin lagging behind and miss the back doors. I'm quickly pulled away.
The doors close, seeing as it looked like I got in the passenger seat. I can hear someone trudging through the woods. I hear it drove away. The van is gone. I close my eyes. I got left behind. When I open them, I'm in the same place.
"I'm very tempted not to give it to you right now." Someone says.
"My family got away. That's all that matters to me." I reply.
"I watched you grow up, Cassidy. I heard your first word, I watched you as you found out what you could do, and then when you were six, you disappeared off the map. Your parents and I were close. I knew you weren't dead." He stares at my uniform before turning to the agents. "Take her back to the compound and make sure she doesn't leave. We can continue after that."
"I can fling both of them across these woods. You know I can. Why don't you stop chasing a dead end case and just take me yourself." I reply as I'm pulled to my feet.
"Alright. You two need to look for anything that could've been left by the van." He orders before grabbing my upper arm. He pulls me through the woods and the broken fence before letting me go. "I hate that I have to do this, but you forced my hand. You're going to just try to escape again, so until you stop, you're wearing this."
He locks what looks like a bracelet around my wrist. I pull out my stitches as he does so.
"You just gave me some little trinket. I don't see how I would be punished by wearing it." I look at it closely. It looks a little bulkier than a normal bracelet.
"Operating passcode: 042524." He says.
The bracelet becomes tighter. A small light blinks. It's a tracker. "I remember that day. It's the day Barry's disappearance went public. Iris was destroyed after that. We lost all communication with Team Flash. I was six when she began closing herself off from us."
"You are unable to leave the compound without triggering an alarm when it is activated." He says before walking inside. It can't have vocal authorization, right?
"Deactivation passcode: 020324." I mumble. It doesn't come off. I start melting it with my heat vision. The bracelet falls off as I speed to the edge of the woods. I stare at the tire tracks and start flying. Then, just like what happened to Mom, two kryptonite darts are fired into my chest. I start falling but pass out halfway down. I wake up and glare at the man in the room.
"I can't believe you. You disobeyed me and tried to chase them." He starts.
"Lectures are not on my bucket list. If you're going to bore me to death with a monologue, just get on with it." I reply.
"No, no. Right now, I'm in charge of you. I already spoke with Kara about it." He pauses and pulls a chair next to the bed. "Cas, I knew your parents before you were born. After National City became a SHIELD agent's paradise, I offered to let you and your family live in New York. When they took my offer, you were two."
"I knew you would monologue." I mumble.
"Your parents and I were almost like brothers and sister. I was there for a lot of your milestones." I hate nostalgic Cap. It is so boring.
"I get it. Sometime during then my parents told you that you had custody over me if they ended up as enemies of the law." I finish. "You don't know anything about me other than my name and my species. Technically, you don't even know my species since Daxam was founded by Kryptonians. So technically, I'm just a Kryptonian."
"Okay, so I don't know anything about you. You could've just said that." He messes with something on a tablet. "If you want anything, let me know."
"Cap, Fury wants you." Tony says.
I watch them leave before getting up. If I were human, I would say I need some aspirin, but then again, it won't do anything since I'm not human. I can hear shouting outside. It's adding to my headache.
I freeze the window before tapping the frozen glass. It shatters. I speed far from the compound before stopping. I can't be followed. No rules, no holding back, just getting home. I run, exhausted. A truck stops beside me.
"Hey, kid! Get in!" A man says. "I'm Nicolas, but you can call me Nick."
I stand there for a second before getting in. I can kill him if he's got an ulterior motive. As I get in, he locks the doors and windows. Strange, but I guess it's just for protection. As he starts driving, he makes a u-turn.
"Where you trying to go? National City? Midvale?" He pauses. "Argo?"
My heart stops. I swallow hard. "I don't know what you mean, sir."
"You're wearing a costume, so I assumed you were-"
"I'm coming from a costume party. My ride left me. That guy who helps Supergirl is so neat, but they didn't have any costumes for girls, so I had to make my own." I pause. "My parents are going to be worried sick. I need to be in Midvale."
"You can't fool me. I'm taking you back where you came from." He says. He takes off his sunglasses and puts on an eyepatch. "I knew you'd eventually leave."
I unbuckle the seatbelt and unlock the door. We're driving at about 80 miles per hour. I open the door and jump. I start rolling down the road, nearly getting hit by the following car. They slam on their brakes.
"Oh my God, are you okay?" The woman asks before speed dialing someone. "Kara, I found her."
"Is she breathing?" A woman asks on the other side of the call.
"Yeah, and she's conscious. She jumped out of a car." The first woman answers.
I open my eyes. Alex is standing on the side of the road, talking to Mom. She hangs up as a black SUV slows down to a stop. She walks over to the car and helps me up.
"Let's talk, Director Danvers." A man says, rolling down the window.
"What do you want from my niece, Coulson?" She snaps. "She isn't hurting anyone other than herself, and that's because she's trying to escape you."
"If you want what's best for your niece, you'll give her to us. We can help her by-"
"By messing with her brain? Killing her? I don't think so." She starts walking away before turning around. "I hope you know she just jumped from a car going about 80 miles per hour just to get away from the Avengers."
"We'll be in touch, Director. Enjoy your night." He says before driving away.
"Get in, Cassie. We're going home." I open the door and sit in the backseat.
"Why do they hate me? Am I as bad as everyone says?"
"You are not bad, Cassie. They just hate you because you aren't fitting into their cookie cutter image of what you should be." She replies, not taking her eyes off the road.
"What is their perfect image? A little lackey to boss around? A prisoner?" I ask.
"To be honest, I don't know and I don't care. All that matters is that you are okay." She doesn't take her eyes off the road. About an hour later, we're pulling into the driveway.
Mom is waiting outside as I get out of the car. She pulls me into a hug and we walk inside. Alex locks the car and the front door as she walks in. I look around the house, with the couch cushions shoved onto the floor. Miles and Mya and watching TV together, laughing and smiling. Clark is trying to cook, and Eliza is helping him.
Mom and Alex are smiling and talking about when they lived here. I walk upstairs and lay in the bay window seat. I stare at the woods outside the house. As I drift off the sleep, I think of how I missed this. I missed normalcy.
