All she wanted was a family,
a chance in life, a safe place to live,
a job she could be proud of,
and that her parents would, too.
She thought she had it—
forever happiness.
She thought she had it—
a life to be proud of.
And every morning she would say,
"Good morning," and hug her daughter.
"Good morning," and kiss her husband.
But her past exposed a truth,
she wasn't really hiding.
"I'm American," she pleaded,
"I'm American."
Lemons threw her back,
taking away her family,
taking away a chance,
taking away a safe place to live,
taking away a job she could be proud of,
and that her parents would, too.
She didn't have it—
forever happiness.
She didn't have it—
a life to be proud of.
And every morning she would say,
"Good morning," to her daughter,
assuring she loved her still from miles away.
And every morning she would say,
"Good morning," and kiss her husband,
pressing her lips on her phone.
Her past was dubbed shameful.
Her past was labeled as illegal.
Her past branded her.
Lemons threw her back
whence she came.
Lemons took her happiness away,
replacing it with frustration.
Lemons left a sour, bitterness in her heart,
but she still said,
"I'm American."
