A Slice Of Hope

Author's Note: Any suggestions for a new title? I really don't like the name, but I can't think of anything else.

It was difficult for Brodhi not to run home after he talked to Dr. Cendrowski. Both him and his guard followed Brodhi as he walked back to his house. They were the only reason that Brodhi didn't run; he knew that they would never be able to catch up with him.

Cendrowski was spending the entire time talking about what he had planned and what he needed Brodhi's help with. He used so many words that Brodhi had never heard before and couldn't understand, that he just spent the time nodding his head. He didn't want to ask him to stop and explain. He was afraid he would look too dumb and Cendrowski would change his mind. He had to get Lynn in that hospital.

Brodhi couldn't help himself from taking off once he saw the front door. It was a couple hours until Curfew, so there were no more children in the house. He flew through the house and into the kitchen. He couldn't see her, so he ran up the stairs and into their bedroom.

He saw Lynn lying on the bed. She was curled up on her side and her large belly rested against the bed. Her red curls were pulled back and sweat glistened off her temple. The air in the room was hot and stuffy. Brodhi put his knee down on the bed and leaned over to kiss her cheek. Her eyes fluttered open and Brodhi leaned away.

"Come on," he said. "We're going now."

If it weren't for the smile on his lips, Lynn would have been terrified.

"Wh...where are we going?" she asked confused. Her voice still sounded groggy from her sleep.

"I got a job. Some doctor wants me to help him out. And-" Brodhi started to explain.

"A doctor?" she asked cutting him off.

"Yes. Bu that's not the best part. Because I'll be workin' in the hospital we'll be livin' there too. You can have the baby in hospital, Lynn."

The confusion left her face and was replaced with a smile. She slowly lifted herself up off the bed and cradled her stomach with her arm.

"What about Jasper? He won't know-" she started.

"That doesn't matter," Brodhi snapped. "Jasper cares about Shai more than us. He comes back here and the place is empty, he shouldn't care. And all of the parents will realize we're gone when we don't open the door. They'll find someone else to go to."

"Brodhi-"

There was a knock on the door that cut Lynn off. Cendrowski stood there with his knuckles still on the doorframe. Brodhi felt Lynn's small, clammy hand clamp around his arm.

"If you don't mind we really should get going," Cendrowski informed them. "Leave all of your stuff here. We will have everything you will possibly need at the hospital."

"We'll be right down," Brodhi told him.

He nodded his head and they listened as he walked down the stairs. Brodhi quickly slipped his arm around Lynn's back and helped her get off the bed. She continued to hold onto his arm as he guided her down the stairs.

The guard was leaning up against the counter in the kitchen with his arms crossed across his chest. Cendrowski was pacing around the kitchen inspecting the cupboards and counters. He didn't turn around until the stairs stopped creaking. He turned around and crossed his hands behind his back.

"There will be a car coming in a few moments," Cendrowski informed them.

"A car?" Brodhi asked arching an eyebrow.

"Yes. You told me your girlfriend was pregnant, but you did not inform me of how far along she is," he scanned Lynn up and down with his eyes quickly. Brodhi felt her sink into his body more, like she was trying to hide herself from his gaze. "I would say you are due in ten to fourteen days. A car to drive us to the hospital is the best thing for her."

Brodhi looked down at Lynn and she had a faint smile on her lips.

"I never did get your names," Cendrowski told them.

"I'm Brodhi," he said.

"Lynn," she said, her voice squeaked.

"The scanner, Callum," Cendrowski ordered his guard.

Callum reached into his pocket and Cendrowski held his hand out. He placed it into his hand and walked back to lean against the counter.

"Let me see your fingers," he told them.

Brodhi held out his hand and he pressed his finger against the scanner. Once he was finished Lynn did the same thing.

"Brodhi Nicholby and Lynn Romero," he said their full names back to them.

A loud ringing noise came from Callum and he reached into his pocket and pulled out another small metal box. He said a couple words into it and then placed it back into his pocket.

"The car is here, Doctor," he told him and Brodhi realized this was the first time he ever heard him speak.

"Well shall go then." Cendrowski's lips curled into a large smile. "I can't wait to get started."

They followed him as he walked out of the house. Callum was close behind him. When they got outside there was a large black car sitting in front of their house. The only times Brodhi ever saw a car was when the truck would roll up to the Drop-Off or the odd time a Brighty would drive to another major city. It was extremely rare for them to do that. They normally took the train, which the rails stood high in the sky so that no Rat could possibly hurt them, to get to another city.

Callum opened up the door and Cendrowski slid in. He kept the door open and Brodhi helped Lynn slid into the car and then he went in. Callum shut the door behind himself. The windows of the car were black from the outside, but Brodhi could see through them perfectly. The seats were the softest things he had ever touched. Cendrowski sat across from Callum, and he and Lynn were in between them. She had wrapped both of her arms around his arm and both of their eyes jumped around to look at everything inside of the car.

There was a sudden jolt and Lynn tightened her grip on his arm.

"This would be the first time the two of you are in a car, correct?" Cendrowski asked them.

"Yeah," Brodhi said taking his eyes off of the glittering lights on the ceiling and focused on Cendrowski.

"It's nice to see there's some Rats who aren't bad. You will se that it will pay off. The hospital will take good care of the two of you and your baby."

Lynn took one of her arms off of Brodhi's arm and lightly began to rub her stomach.

"It is a girl," he told her. "The ultra sound will determine that for sure, but I have worked with enough pregnant woman to know that you are having a girl."

"Oh," Lynn said quietly as she continued to rub her belly. "Thank you."

Cendrowski's eyes focused on her stomach as she cradled it with her arm. He had another large smile on his face.

"No problem at all. I thought you would be interested."

Lynn gave him a quick faint smile. Brodhi knew that if this were a Rat Lynn would be excited about the news and talking about it for days. But this Doctor was making her nervous and she wasn't sure how to react.

They sat in silence as they watch the Slums quickly change into bright. The builds looked a lot nicer. All of the windows were covered in glass, instead of cardboard or blankets. No one was begging on the street, like in the Market. Everyone on the street looked happy and healthy. Not like in the Slums where most people are skinny and terrified of each other. A concrete wall quickly replaced the vision of the beautiful city.

"We are here," Cendrowski announce to them. Once the car stopped moving Callum opened the door and slid out. Brodhi did the same and he helped Lynn as she awkwardly got out of the car. Cendrowski was close behind them.

There was a large glass wall with 23D written across it in white paint. Glass was rare in the Slums, so it amazed Brodhi to see such a large piece with out any chips or cracks. Callum reached out and grabbed a sliver handle that looked like it was floating in the air and opened the door. Cendrowski walked in and Callum cocked his head to the side to motion for Brodhi and Lynn to go in too. Lynn grabbed onto Brodhi's arm again and they walked down a long, narrow, white hallway. The clicking sound of Callum's boots echoed loudly. Cendrowski stopped at a large shiny metal door. He pushed a button beside the doorframe and the door slid open.

When they entered Brodhi was shocked with how tiny it was. There was no room to move after the four of them entered. Cendrowski pushed the button with a large twelve on it and the doors slid closed.

There was a jerk and Brodhi saw in the corner a sign. Red numbers went up every couple of seconds and once it hit twelve it stopped and the doors slid open again. They exited to find themselves in another narrow white hallway that looked identical to the one downstairs.

"Abby, go to nurse's station," Callum said into that other little box he had.

A metal railing became visible and Brodhi noticed that it was a desk. It sat at the corner were the hallway split into another. A man in a white coat sat behind the desk behind a glass wall. He was focused on writing on a tablet in front of him. He looked up once Cendrowski tapped his knuckles lightly on the glass.

"Kirby, this is Brodhi and Lynn," Cendrowski lifted up his arm and gestured to them. "They're here to help us with our research. Lynn and Brodhi I would like you to meet Doctor Kirby. He has been helping me out."

"It's been an honour," Kirby said.

He was the same age as Brodhi and had a thick set of light brown curls on the top of his head. His light brown eyes bounced from his tablet screen to Cendrowski.

"Excuse me, Doctor Cendrowski," a quiet voice said.

They all turned to see a small woman standing beside the edge of the counter. She had on a white uniform that made her blend in with the walls and floor. She was short and had her dark hair twisted into a knot at the back of her head.

"I was called down," her soft voice said.

"Yes, Abby. I would like you to take Lynn here to a room so she can rest. They will be staying with us for a while," Cendrowski instructed her.

She nodded her head and turned slightly to the side, gesturing for Lynn to start walking. Lynn looked up at Brodhi and he could see she's worried.

"Lynn you need some rest," Cendrowski told him. "I am just going to show Brodhi around. He will be given his room and then you can see him. It won't be long."

Lynn was chewing on her bottom lip.

"S'okay," Brodhi said quietly, hoping it would comfort her. She looked over her shoulder at Abby and then back to him.

"Okay," she said before getting up on her toes and giving him a quick kiss.

She turned on her heel and walked down the hallway with Abby. Brodhi wanted to watch and see what room she went into, but Cendrowski started talking.

"I think we should start that tour of this wing," he announced.

Kirby got out from behind the desk and walked into the hallway with him.

"Yes it is getting late," he agreed. "Curfew is coming soon and we should be home with our families."

They started to walk down the rest of the hallway and Brodhi reluctantly followed. Lynn and Abby were still walking and he didn't know what room she'd be in. He was sure that Cendrowski or Kirby would tell him later.

"The first place you should see is the lab," Cendrowski said. "That is where you'll be spending most of your time."

Brodhi didn't say anything but followed them all the hallway came to an end. A large window covered the wall and you could see the buildings light up different colours as the sun started to set. Brodhi understood perfectly why they called it Bright now. The hallway split into two different directions and they turned left to see two large double doors.

Cendrowski opened the door and walked in. Kirby held the door open and stared at Brodhi. He curled his lips into a faint smile.

"You are going to come in?" Kirby asked him.

"Yeah, I'm comin'," Brodhi mumbled. He took another glance out the window as the sky began to get darker and the lights became brighter. It was beautiful and he knew he'd have to show it to Lynn later.

He walked down the hall and into the lab. The floor was made of shiny, white tiles and the walls seemed to give off the same shiny glow. It somehow was even whiter than the hallways. A large metal table sat in the middle and the room seemed to be lined with cabinets and shelves holding objects he had never seen before.

Cendrowski stood in front of the table with his arms crossed over his chest.

"We will begin working now," he told Brodhi.

"What?" he asked knitting his brows together.

A sharp pain exploded in his neck and before he could react his vision went black and he fell to the floor.
