Chapter 9 Hiccup

Astrid is Hiccup's best friend. They had met at his uncle's repair shop and they didn't quite hit it off right away. Hiccup was new and inexperienced which frustrated Astrid. However he worked really hard, one night he stayed late to work on an engine that had stalled for an unknown reason. It was 5am in the morning when Astrid walked into work and saw Hiccup asleep, his head rested against the tire of the car. She looked in the engine and was impressed. She had misjudged Hiccup, he may had been inexperienced but he was a hard worker.

Now the two actually did go on a few dates, however it didn't work out. They were too good of friends to let it transform into something else. They wouldn't have it any other way.

"Hey my partner in crime has returned to his station!" Astrid greeted him.

Her blonde hair was in her traditional braid and her bangs rested upon her forehead. "I thought you had left me for engineering school."

"You know don't have class on Tuesdays." Hiccup said.

"Then where were you last Tuesday?" Astrid asked.

"I was took Toothless to the vet he had to get a tooth pulled." Hiccup said.

"That poor dog is going to live up to his name soon." Astrid said. "Now help me with these spark plugs."

"Hey is that my favorite nephew?" yelled Gobber.

Gobber was Hiccup's uncle who owned the mechanic repair shop. He was a big jolly man a yellow mustache. He loved Hiccup like his own son, he had been taking care of Hiccup since his father died last year.

"Hi Gobber." Hiccup said.

"Hey college boy, why don't you come into my office for a minute." Gobber said.

"Ooooh you're in trouble." Astrid joked,

Hiccup laughed at her childish humor and walked into Gobber's office. His office was the most cluttered place anyone has ever seen. Hiccup couldn't even remember what color desk Gobber had due to it being covered with files. Hiccup had begged him to get someone to organize it but his uncle was stubborn and replied "I can find anything in here, I don't need an organizer to tell me where to put my files,"

"So what's the deal Gobber?" Hiccup asked.

"Well I was thinking, your not here that much since you started excelling at school. So I was wondering if it be okay that I hire a replacement for you." Gobber said, "You would still work Tuesday's and weekends but I need someone to work during the week."

Hiccup was taken aback, but he knew it made sense. He was lucky Gobber was letting him keep his weekend shifts. "Yeah that's fine I understand."

"Now don't be upset with me Hiccup, I know you love working here and I love having you! But you're moving on to bigger and better things. I couldn't be prouder." Gobber said taking his nephew by the shoulder.

Hiccup smiled "I know Gobber, thank you."

Gobber patted him on the back and gave him a playful shove "Now get back to work you may be my nephew but I'm running a business here."

"Yes sir," Hiccup said, walking back to the garage. Astrid had already finished putting in the spark plugs.

"So what did he talk to you about?" She asked.

"Well he just said he needed to hire a replacement for me during the week."

"What?! Now I have to deal with some newbie." Astrid complained.

"Hey I was a newbie and we ended up being friends." Hiccup rationalized.

Astrid's face turned to a frown "yes but that took months! I don't want to make new friends Hiccup I can barely handle you."

"Astrid if you can handle me you can handle anyone that walks through that door." Hiccup said,

"Hm you have a point." Astrid replied.

"Astrid have you ever felt like something was missing?"

Astrid was confused by his question. She put down her tools and kept her focus on him, "What do you mean?"

"Well I have this great job I'm excelling at school, I have great friends and family it's just something feels like it's missing." Hiccup explained.

"Hiccup you've gone through a lot this year. With your dad...and now a new career approaching, it's a lot to take in."

"You're right. It's been a big year." He said,

"Just try to think about being happy right now Hiccup. You deserve to be happy." She said.

"Thanks Astrid."

"Now come on and help me get this battery replaced."
