Chapter 3 Jack
Now Jack wasn't a complete loner. He had his work friend Thiana who was known by Tooth. She earned her nickname at her high school when she got drunk and got a tattoo of a tooth on her upper arm. She said it was actually well done and she didn't mind having it so she kept it. Her then boyfriend had called her his Tooth Fairy. Which was pretty accurate. Back at her high school Tooth was known as a wild child. She dyed her hair shimmering purple blue green and gold. But now she was a somewhat sophisticated secretary with straight brown hair. Trading her ripped jeans for pencil skirts. Although she still has the tattoo.
Jack had met her in his old building and she had been the one to get him his job. She was a very sweet person but if you got her mad...let's just say you wouldn't want to be the cause of it.
"You look like you've seen a ghost." Tooth said when he walked up to her desk.
Jack thought that comment was horrifyingly ironic. He almost wanted to tell her but she'd probably think he was nuts.
He tried to play it cool and gave her a smile "Do I look like a man who loves his job now?"
"No you look like a salesman trying to sell me a car with no engine."
"Tooth you've already used that insult on me you're getting rusty."
"I am not! I haven't used that one for months." Tooth always could tell when he was faking his smiles. She called it his God I wish I wasn't here smile. He could honestly say a hundred percent of the time she was right.
"You just caught me at a weak moment. My boss had me go and buy his wife flowers for their anniversary and then when I did I apparently bought ones she's allergic to."
"Ooh how did that go?" He asked, knowing the answer.
"Not very well." She said. "Jack when are you going to finally use your potential and become my new boss?"
"When I find the time and when I get all the thoughts in my head together." He replied.
"You sound like a crazy person."
He was beginning to feel like one. If only she knew.
"How's the new apartment?" She asked.
"It's....small."
"Well if you would've just stayed in my building then you could've stayed in your slightly bigger apartment." She said giving him an I told you so look.
"You know I couldn't afford that apartment after my college fund started running low."
"You could've let me lend you some. I said you could just borrow it. I know you'd pay me back." She said.
Tooth was also a very generous person, but he had borrowed money from her before. He didn't like it. He ended up returning the exact same money she had gave him the next week.He didn't like the feeling of owing someone. Maybe that's why he decided to help Rapunzel....no matter how hard and crazy it was.
Tooth was then called away by her boss who Jack himself has never seen since working for WorkDream Publishing. He knew him as Tooth's boss. The only essence Jack has of him is his voice. He had a smooth silk like voice, a bit of an accent but Jack wasn't sure if it was British or Australian. He was the only one to call Tooth by her real name. Let's just say Tooth wasn't a fan of him but Jack had a feeling the man wasn't as bad as he had heard from Tooth.
Jack went to his job being a filing clerk. A.KA. the most boring job on the planet. But it paid for his bills.
It was finally time to go home. Jack waited inside the pizza place below his building. Manny's Pizzeria. He got his usual cheese pizza and ate it there. Honestly he was trying to find a reason not to go into his apartment. What if it had all been a dream? What if she was gone? What if she was still there?
He began to feel guilty thinking she had waited for him all day. So he ordered her a small Hawaiian pizza. He wasn't sure if ghosts could eat but he decided the gesture was nice.
He walked up to his little apartment. He put his keys into the door and opened it.
"Rapunzel?" He asked putting his keys down on the hook.
"You still here?" He asked.
He turned around and there she was. His feet sprung into the air as his body lurched backwards.
"You have got to stop doing that!" He said.
"Sorry force of habit." She said. "How was work?"
"Boring and uneventful. How was....here?"
"Oh very interesting actually. I decided to catch up on what I missed in the past few years. By the way what the hell happened to Miley Cyrus and what's twerking?"
Jack began to laugh. That's right she hadn't experienced the Miley Cyrus change or the new dance craze of twerking.
"Trust me you don't want to know." He replied.
She seemed satisfied with his answer. "Do you make vines?"
"No I do not." He replied.
"Funny it seemed like something you would do. Some of them are really funny." She said. She saw the pizza box in his hand.
"Is that Hawaiian I smell?" She asked.
"Oh yeah I wasn't sure if ghosts ate but I remembered that you like Hawaiian pizza so I got you some." He said.
"Oh thank you!!! That's so nice of you! And yes ghosts do eat but we don't get hungry. Like we're indifferent to eating. We could eat if there was food there but we don't need to survive....obviously" She said. She opened the box and smelled her delicious pizza. She took a slice and took a bite.
"Oh my gosh this is so good!" She said through bites. "It's been four years since I've eaten pizza! They better have this stuff in the afterlife."
"Well for now there is plenty downstairs." He replied.
"What do you mean?"
He was confused. "The Pizzaria right below my apartment?"
"Oh I never have been." She said.
"What that's impossible you have to go through the Pizzaria to get to my apartment. Did you climb the place or something?"
"No I just appeared here. The booth angel guy just pressed a button. I ended up in your then empty building. You were still moving stuff in."
"Yeah before we talk all this after life stuff we should set some boundaries."
"Okay."
"Number one: No popping out of nowhere. Two: Preferably no touching. it still weirds me out Sorry. Three: No going on my laptop unless you get my permission."
"Jack you sound more like my dad then my friend." Rapunzel joked but her face became serious. "What happened to my parents?"
Jack hoped she wouldn't ask that question. Rapunzel was an only child. Her parents were beyond devastated. They ended up getting a divorce.
"Uhm I don't think you want to hear it."
"Tell me Jack I have to know."
Jack sat down with her on the couch. "Rapunzel your parents were devastated and sometimes when a really bad thing happens people grow apart."
"They.....they got a divorce."
She stopped eating and put the little box on the coffee table. Rapunzel's eyes filled with watery tears. Several dripped down her cheeks and off her chin.
"I ruined everything." She said. "All because I...died I ruined everyone else's life."
"Hey it's not your fault Rapunzel. You didn't ruin everyone's life, I'm alright."
"Yes but you're not with Merida and Hiccup anymore!"
"Not many high school friendships last anyway."
She stared at him like he had slapped her. "How could you say that? You guys were like my family! You guys are my family! For you to just throw them out of your life!"
"Hey it takes more than one person to end things Rapunzel. They weren't so keen on staying together! What do you have to say? You were gone for four years just waiting in some line! You abandoned us too!"
"You just said that wasn't my fault!"
"It isn't!!!! But it still hurt Rapunzel! It still felt that way!"
Rapunzel finally had enough. She disappeared leaving Jack alone in his apartment.
"Great. I wish I could do that every time I had an argument." He said bitterly.
The lights flickered and he knew she was still there. He went to bed and tried to get some sleep.
