Chapter 2 Jack
She wasn't back for a few days. Jack had concluded that he had just imagined the whole situation but deep inside he knew he didn't. The picture was put back in the box and things went just as usual. Jack had even began writing his new book. He went with the tech guy turning CIA agent. He almost had the first two chapters done.
He soon forgot about the Rapunzel incident during the day and buried himself in his work. But at night his memories projected in his dreams.
"Jack come on we're going to get in trouble!" Rapunzel said.
Jack had been trying to pick the lock of the infamous Pitcherson house. It was a dark old abandon house. A town legend. Apparently a kid lived there all by himself some hundred years ago. He said he could speak to ghosts and the town went insane and demanded the boy be imprisoned for witchcraft. But when they finally busted in. The boy was gone. Some say he buried himself beneath the floor boards and died because he couldn't get out. Some say the kid just ran away. Some say that he is still there hiding in the fireplace.
Jack had always wanted to go in and see what was in there. He had finally convinced his friends to come with him on Halloween to the old Pitcherson house.
"Will you calm down. The house is abandon no one will be here." He replied. "Here I need another one of your bobby pins. I dented the first one."
Rapunzel took out another hair pin and handed it to Jack.
"Come on Jack I've seen you pick bigger locks then this in half the time." Merida said.
Click
Jack got up and opened the creaky old door.
"You were saying?"
"I was saying its about time." Merida said.
.................
"It's about time."
"What?" Jack asked. He had just woken up. Sitting on his bed was Rapunzel.
"I was saying its about time we talk about my situation."
"God not again."
"Jack I need your help." She said.
"Well I'm sorry I don't help illusions my head makes up,"
"Fine if I was an illusion could I do this?" She asked quickly she leaned over and kissed him before he could pull away.
Her mouth felt cold. But he felt it. It was like a feather had touched him She was real. She was there.
She pulled back and smiled
"Throw back to Halloween right?" She smiled.
Jack was dumbfounded for the first time he was scared and happy at the same time. It felt like some one had punched him then given him a hug afterwards. Or in this case a kiss.
"Throw back to Halloween right?" She had said. He remembered the rest of the flashback. Rapunzel and him were exploring the upstairs part of the house. When she thought she heard a bat fly into the room. (It turned out to be a bird.) she had ran to him. They laughed realizing it was just a bird but still they didn't let go. Instead she had given him a kiss. Then they didn't speak of it again.
She noticed his inner confusion
"Jack don't be scared of me. It's just me Rapunzel."
"That's easy for you to say you didn't wake up to find your dead best friend from high school invade your apartment then kiss you."
"You kept denying I was real! I had to do something to make you know I was real plus I just really wanted to kiss you." She giggled.
"This is weird. This is insane." He said.
"I know but you just have to listen to me." She said "I have a problem."
"How can ghosts have problems?"
"I'm having trouble getting to the other side. You see I need to complete my dream."
"Your dream?"
"Yes see when I complete my dream then I can go back to the afterlife. "
"Wait so you were there before?"
"Well sort of. I was in the waiting line. Do you know how many people die in the world. It's a lot anyway after four years of waiting in line I finally get there to find out I need to complete myself and follow my dream and then I'll have a one way ticket to the afterlife."
"You waited four years in a waiting line?"
"Well four years to you. For me it felt like 4 minutes."
"What?!"
"It's hard to explain you'll know it when you get there which I hope isn't too soon." She said
It sounded crazy. Waiting lines and dream conquering. But he wondered if anyone else could see her. He could feel her, see her, hear her, what if others could too. Had she seen Merida or Hiccup?
"Can anyone see you too?"
"That's the other problem. For some reason only you can see me. To answer your other question no I have not seen Merida or Hiccup yet. But I need to soon "
"How did you-"
"No I do not have cool mind reading powers I just knew what you were going to ask. I'm your best friend Jack since 6th grade. I think I know you by now."
"A lot has changed Rapunzel,"
"Nothing really changes Jack they evolve and sometimes it takes a little time to evolve into what you're meant to be or who you've always been."
"What do they teach you philosophy while waiting to get in the afterlife?"
"No but it gives you time to think." She replied.
She was right. In those four years he had done a lot of thinking. He had dropped out of college, he became a file clerk in a publishing company which he almost got fired from all while trying to write a novel. He knew he didn't want to die before completing his dream of being a writer, so helping Rapunzel seemed like the right thing to do.......no matter how insane it sounded.
"Okay Rapunzel humor me whats your dream."
"That's also the problem I don't really know what it is yet."
"That's going to be a problem." He said.
"I'm sure we'll find it somehow we just need to dig a little into the past."
"You're not going to tell me you can time travel now are you."
Rapunzel laughed and rolled her eyes "No silly I'm a ghost not a time traveler." She reached out a hand to him but he pulled away.
Surprise appeared on her angelic face. Jack felt badly but he couldn't help it. Her touch just frightened him. He had been there at the hospital. He saw her be dropped into the ground and buried. It was just too much.
"I'm sorry I just-"
"No I understand, it's still weird." She said trying to hide her embarrassment.
"I just need some time to.....get used to you being back and all."
"Sure....so should we get started? Finding my dream?"
"I would but I have to go to work."
"You have a job! Doing what?"
"I'm a filing clerk at a publishing company."
"Wow. I thought you would be......never-mind."
"You'd thought I'd already be a writer by now. It's okay I did too."
"I just assumed from your character list." She said. "Can I go with you to work."
He started putting on his dark blue work pants over his boxers. Clumsily putting on his belt.
"That wouldn't be the best idea.....people would think I'm talking to myself."
"Oh right well I guess that's best so I'll see you after work?"
"I guess so." He put on a white collared shirt and a dark jacket.
"Wow you look so professional Jack." She said.
"Thanks. I'll be back around 5 okay?"
"Okay I'll be here." She said standing up and walking with him to the door.
"Bye Jack."
"Bye......Rapunzel." He said and left her alone in his apartment.
