Chapter 12 Hiccup and Merida

Hiccup stared at his phone screen. He was looking through old Facebook photos from high school. Ever since seeing that girl in the cafe he could not stop thinking about his old high school friends, especially Merida. He remembered meeting her in ninth grade English class. She sat behind him, she was always coming in late with some sort of breakfast item. Hiccup was never a morning person and usually left the house not eating breakfast in order to get there on time. The smell of whatever she had, scones, sandwiches, Pop-tarts, would drive his stomach crazy. One day she came in later than usual this time with two Starbucks breakfast sandwiches in a little bag. She placed one on his desk and took her seat. He was in disbelief as he turned around. She said "I didn't want to hear your stomach grumbling  in class, it's very distracting," She gave him a sly smile and Hiccup was done for.

He swiped through his photos starting at freshman year. He saw Merida's wild hair taking up most of the photos, he came across a photo of Rapunzel. They had been doing a history project all together and had to dress as people from different time periods. Rapunzel was dressed as Jane Austin. She had sewed the blue high waist dress herself. He remembered Jack saying she looked more like Cinderella, but Rapunzel said something about the silhouettes being totally different not recognizing how in love Jack was with her at that point in their lives.

Looking at her in this picture made him feel like what happened to her did not happen, as if she was simply a person from another time, another life. The next photo was of her and Jack, who was dressed as Mark Twain. His fake mustache was comical and he died his hair white just for the project. Hiccup felt a knot in his chest thinking about the last time Jack or any of them had talked for that matter. It's hard to believe that the goofy kid in this photo turned so hateful that night on graduation. It was the only time he had ever heard Jack yell, he remembered Merida crying as he tried to diffuse the situation, but in reality...too many hurtful things were said during a time when they were all grieving...Rapunzel was not there to hold them all together.

The phone rang, interrupting Hiccup's memories. It was Astrid, she was probably wondering why he was running so late.

He  answered the phone, "Hey I'm sorry I got caught up with some stuff I am heading out in a few,"

"Fiiiine, just hurry up," Astrid said and ended the call.

Hiccup chuckled at his friend's impatience. He sauntered into his room to retrieve his jacket that was laid carelessly on the floor. He brushed off Toothless' hair from the jacket and put it on feeling a sense of comfort when he did. He felt a buzzing from his back pocket.

'Astrid is really not letting up tonight?' Hiccup thought pulling his phone out. Only it wasn't Astrid. The number displayed  on his screen said it was coming from New York, but he didn't know of anyone in New York. He shrugged and sent the call straight to voicemail, mostly likely spam or a telemarketer. He returned the phone to the back pocket of his jeans and went down the hall to the hook that hung by the front door. He grabbed his keys from the hook and walked out the door and locked it.

Merida

Merida breathed a sigh of relief as she was finally home from her 12 hour shift at Sandy's Diner. Her feet felt ached and she could barely lift her arms after hauling tray after tray. She put her keys and phone on her dresser. She slipped off her shoes knowing if she bent down to do it she would never get back up again. She slowly got into bed not wanting to strain her muscles anymore than she already had. She pulled the cool comforter onto her sore body and smiled happy to be back in bed at last.

Her phone rang interrupting her contentment. There was no way she was getting out of bed to reach her phone. If it was important they would leave a voicemail. She turned onto her side wanting the annoying ringtone to end so she could just go to sleep. Finally silence filled the room, she breathed a sigh of relief and closed her eyes. One blissful moment had past until she heard the dreaded voicemail ding that came from her phone. They had left a voicemail...and Jamie wasn't home yet.

'He's fine' she thought he could handle himself. 'But what if he was in trouble...or arrested...and she was his only call....

"Fuck." she groaned, taking the covers off her body begrudgingly. She sauntered over to her dresser and grabbed her phone. It was an unknown number in Brooklyn New York. She lived in the Bronx so there was a possibility it could have been Jamie.

'It fucking better be Jamie and it better be a matter of life and death,' she thought angrily.

She opened her voicemail and hit play,

Merida's chest tightened and tears welled up on cue. She must be having a nightmare, there is no possible way this could be happening to her. She dropped the phone the second she heard the voice on the other end.

"Hi Mer....it's Rapunzel,"

Author's note: Hopefully these chapters will get longer, it's hard writing from four perspectives haha. Hope you all like it and please comment and vote!
