Chapter 1 Jack
Jack was finally settled into his apartment. His small one bedroom apartment. His cramped crappy one bedroom apartment. It was perfect for him though. He didn't usually have company anyway ever since his break up with Mandy. Once every so often Tooth would come over but that was rare especially since she moved across town. She lived in his old apartment complex and worked at the same publishing company as a secretary. He used to have more friends back in high school but they had faded away over the years.
His walls were now an off white, the carpet grey in every room. The kitchen was minuscule as was the bathroom. He had wanted to make his room part of an office but there was no room for a desk and a bed, so now his nice maple desk was in the living room sitting on top of it was his laptop.
He unloaded the last box when he noticed something in it. It was a framed picture of him and his three best friends...well former best friends from high school. His grandpa had sent him a few mementoes from high school earlier that year but Jack hadn't the time to open it.
The picture brought back the memory of the summer leading up to senior year. They had just finished their volunteer hours at this summer camp. Camp Burgess, they had been looking forward to it since it was a senior tradition. Hiccup was on the far right wearing his yellow camp volunteer shirt. His goofy grin covering his face. The girl next to him was Merida Dunbroch. Her red fiery hair went down her back, her blue eyes bouncing. Jack was on the far left his brown hair and brown eyes full of mischief.
In between him and Merida was Rapunzel. Rapunzel Corona, her long blonde hair reached her waist. Green eyes glistening with perfection. Her pink tank top matched her rosy cheeks. Her face seemed to radiate sunlight. Everything about her was so vibrant and beautiful. She was the loveliest person you had ever met. She always knew how to make everyone smile. Then she was gone in just a matter of days.
It was senior year and Rapunzel had left her house on Saturday evening to meet up with him. She had told him she was running a bit late but didn't say why. When she didn't show up to their place after waiting around his place for an hour he got worried and called her but it went straight to voicemail. He called her parents and her mom had picked up saying there had been an accident. She was hit by an oncoming car while she was driving. She had died in the hospital that night. That's all Jack knew about it.
They all took it pretty hard. The end of senior year was supposed to be full of parties and college applications not funerals. The group tried to go on hanging out as normal but it was too hard. It wasn't the same. Every conversation seemed forced
The group had fallen apart by graduation. Each going into their separate groups. They said they would try to stay in touch but they knew that was a lie. Jack would never admit it but he did miss them...all of them. But that was four years ago. Now he was living above a pizza place. Working as a file clerk at a publishing company all while trying to be a writer.
He had written a few short stories but was having trouble completing a whole novel. He had to send his editor something soon or else he could lose him.
Jack considered throwing the picture away but couldn't bring himself to do it. Instead he just placed the picture back into the box and tucked it under his bed.
'Out of sight out of mind.' He thought.
Jack walked steadily to his computer and stared at the blank white screen. The thin little black line blinking, waiting for him to make it move with words.
"Come on Jack have some inspiration for a change." He said to himself.
He made clicking noises on the keyboard with his fingers but didn't press hard enough to actually write anything. It became a nervous habit of his. Tapping.
'Okay think of some character names at least.'
Jack wrote down random names that came to his head.
Tom Petterson:
Super smart tech repair guy turned CIA agent.
Jack deleted the name shaking his head.
Elena Show: Runaway wild child that goes to on wacky adventures
'That could possibly work." Jack said.
There was a sudden crash from his bedroom. He turned his head quickly then slowly got up from his black rolling chair. He went to the hallway closet and picked up his black metal baseball bat for safety. Where he lived wasn't too bad of a neighborhood but in New York you never quite know.
"What the?" Jack said picking up the lamp and putting it back on his night stand. There on his night stand was the photograph of the four friends.
"Is someone in my apartment?" Jack said to himself he put the photo back into the box..
He looked into his closet and their was no one there. He crept into his bathroom. Still nothing. He went into the living room. And decided he was just over reacting. He went back to his computer.
He glazed over to his screen. His eyes widen in surprise to what he saw. In black comic sans letters
Rapunzel Corona: Girl who needs help from her friends.
Jack knew he didn't write that. Jack deleted the text and looked around and saw green eyes staring back at him.
"Hi Jack."
He looked and what he saw was Rapunzel in front of him. Wearing a purple top and yoga pants and her pink sneakers. Her hair was up in a ponytail. She looked like she was going out for a jog. She looked just like she always did. Perfect and pretty.
"It's been a long time. I've missed you." She said.
Jack must be seeing things. He decided to turn back to his computer and forget anything had happened. He hasn't gotten much sleep since moving. He was probably just seeing things.
"Jack you can't ignore me forever. I know you can see me." Rapunzel said.
'Come on Jack keep it together. It's been four years. You just found an old picture and you've had lack of sleep.
"Fine ignore me. But you have to talk sometime." She said.
Then she was gone.
He breathed a sigh of relief.
"See it was nothing just your head playing games with you." Jack said.
Another noise came from his bedroom
Jack looked towards his bedroom. He was contemplating whether to go in there or not. It could be a burglar or it could be a stray animal. Or worse it could be her.
He decided to go to the bedroom. He looked at his nightstand and saw the picture was up there again. This time with a note.
I need to talk to you...Sorry for breaking your lamp.
Love Rapunzel
Jack was officially freaked out. He put the picture back into the box and this time put it on a pretty high shelf.
He washed his face with some cold water.
"Okay Jack you're gonna take a nap and all of this will be gone." He said to himself.
Jack lied in his bed and put the covers on. He was used to the cold but today it felt really chilly in his apartment. He tried to get some sleep. Jack had just begun to drift off when he heard singing.
Jack got out of bed and slowly followed the voice.
Rapunzel was singing in his kitchen making pancakes.
"Hey sleepyhead I thought you would like some pancakes I know how much you love blueberry pancakes. "
Jack rubbed his eyes. He walked back to bed and just laid there staring at the ceiling. He could still hear her humming in the kitchen. This wasn't happening. Rapunzel had died four years ago. This was impossible.
Jack remembered how she woke him up at 7am on his birthday and made him pancakes and coffee. Then instead of driving him to school. She drove him to a hockey game.
Rapunzel walked into his bedroom and told him his pancakes were ready but he still didn't get out of bed. He stayed in there until the evening came. She hadn't come back into his room but he could still hear her. Finally his mind couldn't take being awake anymore and he went to sleep.
When he woke up that morning she wasn't there. The picture wasn't on his night stand and the box was still on it's high shelf.
"God it was just a dream." Jack said.
He walked into the kitchen to make his regular cup of coffee. Inside the refrigerator was a small stack of blueberry pancakes.
"Do you know how long those took me to make. I admit I'm a little rusty but still it's the thought that counts." He heard her say.
"Oh my god I've gone crazy." Jack said.
"Wow he speaks finally." Rapunzel said.
"You're not real. I'm just not feeling well."
"I'm real Jack. I'm real and I need your help."
Jack walked away and went back to bed.
"Don't walk away from me. Is that anyway to treat your best friend who's been dead for four years?"
"This isn't happening. Jack she isn't real you've just made something up in your twisted little head"
"Fine pretend I don't exist!" Rapunzel said and she was gone.
Jack looked up and saw her reaching for the box on the high shelf. She was too short to reach though so she tried jumping but she just hit the shelf and it came tumbling down with the box.
"Jesus Rapunzel!"
"Ah ha! You talked to me! I knew it! I knew you could hear me and see me!"
"No I still believe I'm having a nervous breakdown."
"Jack don't be so dramatic." Rapunzel said. She picked up the photo. The frame had been dented a bit but it was still useable.
"Why do you keep this locked away. This was a fun day." She said holding the picture.
"I don't want to talk about it." Jack said.
"Okay well I'm going to place it somewhere. I'm sure Hiccup and Merida have their copies up somewhere."
"I highly doubt that."
"How are they Hiccup and Merida? Did Hiccup finally ask her out?"
"Oh my god I'm having a conversation with a dead person who I've probably just imagined because I've gone insane."
"Jack you're not answering my question."
"I don't know I haven't spoke to them since graduation."
"Four years?! You haven't seen them for four years! Why?"
"Because of you Punz. We just weren't the same people anymore after you left."
Rapunzel sighed sadly "we were all so close and I ruined everything."
"You didn't ruin-"
But she was gone. The photo was on the floor and he noticed a few water drops had fell on it. Almost like tears.
