Acceptance
Accepting a person with a disability means accepting ALL of them, not just the parts that are comfortable or convenient for you. It means that to be a GOOD friend to them sometimes you might have to go a little out of your way or your comfort zone to make things easier for them. Tie your hands together and then try doing every day activities like eating and tying your shoes. Now imagine how much more frustrating that would be if someone was breathing over your shoulder every second to hurry up because your're late!
People with disabilities are first and foremost PEOPLE.....we all have different needs, and when someone trusts you enough to let you in....that's a gift. When we ask nicely for an accommodation and you blow us off... YOU make us less of a person...you make us feel like less of a person. I can't and would never speak for everyone with every disability, but I know that when I've asked people....people who I thought were friends, to grant me certain accommodations.....and then they turn around and forget I exist....forget my needs exist.......It makes me feel like less of a person, and makes me question their motives as a friend in the first place. It's hard enough for me to trust people without the few people I do trust stabbing me in the back!
Don't preach acceptance when all you're interested in is abism!
