*sigh* The Token Black Person
Since school is a bitch and it's got me to a ranting mood I feel like talking about the one and only token black person.
Now back to the topic of this chapter,
this has been honestly going on for years and is still being practiced (wow I'm acting like this is a ritual or something lol) to this day. Although they mostly do this with an ensemble cast , to support main character who is white or any other race for that matter or to bring more diversity to the movie or TV show, it doesn't necessarily mean that when they do this the show or movie is a disaster or just completely racist. There are great tv shows and movies that participate in this but still don't push them to the side lines or make them into a full in stereotype.
Examples are....
• The Good Place
•Brooklyn Nine-Nine
• Stranger Things
• On my Block
Honestly that's all I can think of right now but to rest my case just think of anyone movie or TV show that treats their black characters or people of color like people instead of just items
And that's is the problem with "token black characters"
They are mostly used to show viewers 'hEy wErE nOt rAcIst, We iNcLudE eVreYoNe' while still treating them as less important.
Examples of this would be..
° Making them into a full stereotype that it's just hilariously ridiculous
° Not giving them their own storyline if they are a supporting character (because they do that for supporting characters)
° Pushing them to the sidelines so much, that they are only their for a ' diversity pass '
° Not respecting them as a character like they would with the other characters even if they are not important to a particular storyline
° Is only important or supports the white counterpart without having their own storyline or point or view in the situation*cough* Falcon and War Machine in the MCU *cough*
And so on because I can write a whole essay about how this trademark is actually problematic but I won't cause I'm kinda lazy🤷🏿♀️🙃
Anyways, they probably have a reason to why they do this and this doesn't necessarily mean that the content is bad like I said before. It's just freaking annoying tbh like dang this had been going on for years and in 2020 it's still continuing like oof
*On that note , I wanted to add that in most Black TV shows or movies they do have a token white character as well which can be annoying at times as well
And also another point to add before I'm done is that it happens in the music industry as well particularly in girl groups and they and any other black person in an ensemble cast that's is mixed with other races are either not acknowledged, pushed aside, overshadowed by their fellow counterparts, underappreciated or just deal with unecessary that just goes down to complete racism, sexism or so on (which is completely unexceptable ) and that is just wrong in my opinion. Like even if you don't Stan that person or that person isn't particularly your favorite you still have to know that she/he is a human freaking being and has feelings so spreading hate towards that person is just wrong and this can be said to anyone especially if they don't deserve it . Hate is wrong and what we should be spreading is Love .
I've been seeing this go on in the following fandoms that I've been in and honestly it's just tiring .
Anyways that's about it
