'Pretty'

I will understand if you don't take what I say (write) seriously cause I'm not what people call 'pretty'.
People even keep asking me if I'm a boy or a girl, or they just straight out assume I'm a boy. If your reading this with the hope that I would tell you what gender I am, then you would be disappointed cause I'm not telling yea. I don't think gender really matters anyway.

Gender is something we can talk about another time.

What I want to talk about is people's views on 'pretty'. How society seems to push on us about how we should look, act, and think. I have run into a lot of girls at my school who hate shaving their legs, and would just like to stop doing it altogether. But they keep on shaving their legs anyway because society tells them to. Their afraid if one day they will come to school in a skirt with hairy legs, and that people will stare, that people will talk. Some girls can get away with some hair because of how light the hair is. But some have black hair, (like me) so they have to do it a lot more.

I know that their are some girls who do it because it makes them feel good about themselves. Then that's great, keep shaving your legs if it makes you feel good, but don't press other girls to do the same. Girls have a lot of presser to look good, to wear 'girl' clothes, to wear makeup, but not too much makeup. To wear jewellery, to do girly stuff, and to be skinny, but not too skinny. Society seems to think that girls need to be perfect, act perfect, look perfect, to be perfect.

I am a feminist, not because I think females are better, but because we're all human, so we should all be equal. It shouldn't matter what gender you are, or what race, religion, sexuality. All that should matter is that we are all human. So we should all be treated as such.

Now this rant mite seem a little one sided cause I've only been talking about females. Well males have pressure too. Society keeps telling them that it is wrong to like feminine things. That they have to be strong and handsome to be in a relationship. And in high school I can't help but notice that if a female is called dumb it's considered wrong. But if you call a male dumb it's considered a joke, while also having some truth behind it. I just don't get it.

When men are adults their expected to be smart, manly, mature and all around gentlemen. Adult woman are expected to be ladylike but not too ladylike, mature, feminine but not too feminine and smart but not too smart. But in high school the expectations for girls are still the same, but their expected to be immature while also smart. For boys in high school their expected to be smart while also dumb, their expected to be more immature then girls, to be into sports and cars, and have at least one relationship before they end high school.

(Don't even get me started on high school relationships.)

The point is their are a lot of pressure on both males and females. Boys must open the door for girls, and pull out their chair. Girls must look perfect, but not too perfect or they would be considered fake. While I think we should throw away those expectations, and just be humans. Wear whatever you want, act however you want, like whoever you want, and look however you want. Clothes, gender, sexuality, race, religion, disability, doesn't matter, all that matters is that you be you, because we're all human.

Thanks for reading my rant.
