Original Characters (OC's)

I have expressed my hatred for OC's before, but I have never done them as topic. I really hate OC's, lots of people do, but I also believe an OC can be good when done right. I believe OC's are about self expression, a way of fans expressing themselves, while also showing their love for a show, movie, anime, comic, etc. What's good about them is there are no rules as to how your supposed to make an OC. So you can go crazy and do whatever you want, because it's your OC.

But there are times when you can take it too far.

When people do art of it you have to at lest try your best doing it yourself. It mite not turn out as good as others, but at lest you tried, and if you keep on trying it will get better. That's why I don't like it when people just trace over existing artwork, or a scene from an anime. It's your OC, so why not try to make an artwork of it yours, not just a copy of someone else's.

Then there's the subject of when people start writing fanfics about their OC. Some make their OCs into really interesting characters that you can't help but support. While others ruin not only the OC, but the whole story as well.

The mistakes that most people make that ruin a OC fanfic, is that they make them too perfect. I can understand that when making a character you want them to be perfect, a character everybody would love. But then you just end up going too over board. When the OC is too perfect nothing is a challenge, so you can't really root for the character. Some people try to fix this by having them be bullied, or have a really sad past. But that just makes people root for the bully, and their sad past is so over the top and unrealistic that you can't relate to the character.

I can go on and on about this topic, but it's much more simpler if I do a list of mistakes people make with their OC fanfics.

- Too popular. Friends with everyone in the fandom the fanfic is about.

- Un-relatable. So gorgeous that everywhere they go people check them out, cause their soooo "hot". Their naturally talented at everything.

- Most of the time they are related to one of the main characters from the fandom.

- Most of the time the OCs are females.

- Too overly designed. Long unrealistic coloured hair, rainbow coloured eyes, perfect fashion sense (described in the most detail as possible.), not a single flaw on their body. Also super skinny.

- Over the top sad past.

- Bullied but everyone in the school stands up for them.

- Overly annoying.

- Overly sarcastic. People think if they just make their character sarcastic, that it makes them more human. But they just make them go over board, and hate-able.(I don't think that's a real word but I'm rolling with it.)

- Blah blah blah, I think you get my point.

The only way I think you can get and OC right, is if you base them off yourselves, or people around you. Both the strong point, and the faults. Making sure you stick with the fandom cannon. (Like trying not to make your OC a sister, best friend, etc. of the fandom characters.) And most of all, make sure not to go over the top. That way the OC is relatable, has challenges, and isn't overly annoying.

Thank you for reading my rant.
