Stereotypes of being a writer/Author

T'was a time where thy hobby was anon...

Ok I can definitely not carry on writing like that *sighs*

How many of you reading this are writer's/authors? Have you faced any questions from people that made you want to take a pitchfork and stab your own eye's?

Aye or nay?

To be honest, I was only a reader for one year since I had joined wattpad but then I started to explore the other aspects and here I am.

I did not go around telling people that writing is my hobby. People started to assume that I was a couch potato, slugging all day and started to brag about 'their baggings in life' with a smug grin on their faces while I just nodded and went along with them.

A few months went by and my secret was out in the open that I was a writer...

I can never forget those days of agony that I had to face (which I do even now)

The assumptions that people have makes me want to run away to Bali and and swim away with a dolphin xD

~ Stereotypes associated with being a writer ~

~ All writers are heavy drinker's

Writers are prone to alcoholism. Certainly,
some writers fall prey to alcohol/coffee  addiction , but I don’t think authors are especially susceptible compared to other groups.

"Where is your secret stash of coffee?"

"What's your capacity? 4 bottles straight into the mouth?"

Why do people think that all writers pull out an all nighter of drinking coffee to keep themselves awake and write their stories?

I prefer coffee to tea but I definitely don't   own stashes of coffee powder that varies from countries and taste.

Adult writers may have alcohol but they are definitely not drunk yards slurring away mumbling about their new book that makes them lose their sleep.
(I think) LOL

~ Writers are unkempt.

There was this kid who came upto me and asked if looking like a hobo is common among writers -.-

Just one day I wore a hoodie and a 3/4th , sneakers with my messy curly hair springing at a 360° and that's the day a few peers of mine assumed that writers look like hobo when they are going through a heavy writers block ._.

P.H.U.C.K   Y.O.U :3

"What's the general attire of a writer/Author?" Said kid from above para asked me.

Just wear clothes kiddo. There might be writers roaming around their house butt naked because they own the house and can do anything they want but surely you don't want to display your birthday suits in public right?

I just patted him on the head and asked him to carry on doing whatever he wants to because if I had voiced out my thoughts, my ass would have been chopped by his mom.

~ writing is easy

I definitely want to smack everyone who assume that writing is easy.

"It's just picking up a pen and writing stuffs on paper. How difficult can it be?" They say...

Yeah let me take out a pen and write about the delightful expression on my face while I stab you with potatoes. It sounds heavenly to my ears, easy as baking a chocolate truffle cake.

~ writers always carry note books and post it notes.

Bruh! Where is the post it note? I just got inspiration while taking a dump.
Oh I have a pen stuck between my bewbs *shrugs*

Writes the story inspiration over the exposed skin of my body.

That's how we roll *pulls shades up*

~ Writers are eccentric

Some people are just plain weird. I’ve met weird and strange people in every profession. Creative people often seem eccentric to those on the outside because the creative mindset sets them apart as decidedly different. People think different is weird and eccentric.

~ Authors are depressed and melancholy

There is something called 'LIFE' people do get sad or lonely from time to time but assuming that most writers are depressed souls SMH.

As if other profession or hobbies are filled with people who are happy go lucky every second of their lives.

If some people don't like to mingle much doesn't mean they are antisocial or depressed. It just means that  THEY WANT TO BE ALONE.

Geez, cut come slack in the assumptions and leave that poor fella alone.

~ We have day jobs

When people hear “writer”, they usually think it means that we write books or that we are journalists. They forget about all of the other writing that sits in between, making them assume that we just write for fun and not for a living.

So many people assumed that I'm doing B.A journalism /English when they came to know I'm a writer.

One uncle asked me why was I be in a fool by doing b.com when writing was my hobby.

After 100 failed attempts I came to know that when an adult asks you a question it is not for you to reply back but for all the people in the room to sit and have a discussion and end up with their own satisfactory answer while you sit there opening and closing your mouth like a fish.

Uncle - You are a writer nah Akanksha?

Me - yes but...

Uncle *SMH* wasting your life. Should have done journalism *SMH*

Me - that's not the...

Uncle 2 - ikr? Lost cause! Should have called us and we would have helped her with our golden advices.

Me - excuse me but...

Aunty - Writer? How much you earn?

Me - it's a hobby but...

Aunty 2,3,4 - eh no published books? What is this nonsense of online writing?

Me - I'M A WRITER NOT AN AUTHOR AND...

Everyone in the room joins about how I have lost my track in life and need  serious advice from adults blah blah blah.

I kid you not, the above scenario has happened. They keep asking why I did b.com if I wanted to be a writer.

I'm sick and tired of explaining because these adults give me a weird face like I'm a nut case then they tell my mom that I'm being brainwashed by the forces of Internet.

My mom asks them to let me speak up then I start slaying them with their idiotic assumptions then they say that writers are all rude people with no manners :'D

Hoomans can never be pleased. Society  thinks they are always right.

I'm so fed up with such people to whom I have to explain things again and again but still nothing gets into their thick fat skull because they believe whatever they think is always right.

~ We’re broody

Yes, we all just sit around solemnly thinking to ourselves in dark rooms full of antique furniture. With our cats on our laps and ink staining our fingers. Give me a break. We’re humans. We can be broody, but no more than anyone else.

~ We’re mysterious

I can’t put my finger on this one, really. Are we mysterious because people don’t understand how we make a living, or are we mysterious because we are doing something that most of the world does, but better?

Maybe because they think we are not social enough hence the aura of mystery around us but in truth we just don't want to associate with people who keep assuming and judging LOL

~We can write anything

Technically I suppose we can, but that doesn’t mean we’ll do it well. Everyone has a different writing style, some may be good with romance but not good with science fiction or whatever.

Not ever person can be a master of everything.

Weird assumptions -

A real writer writes only masterpieces. Moreover, a real writer writes masterpieces from the first attempt. Editing is for amateurs, real writers write from scratch, all at once.

A real writer never writes in simple language. Real writers use fancy vocabulary, complicated constructions, and write only in long, meaningful sentences.

Writers have 20+ cats; I'm a cat person  but not all people out there are cat lovers and not all people who own cats are lonely depressed souls with no one else to love.

~ Demands I get from people

• Write birthday wishes for people I don't know

• comment fancy words on people's pictures on social media

• Write a story about them and they should be the main lead

• Review their time pass stories because I'm their friend and a writer so it's a must for me to help them with their time pass stories

• Tell them stories when they are bored or can't sleep because I'm a writer so I have to live up to my hobby or else I'm not a true writer.

• Give them my collection of books only to never get it back from them.

"You are a writer, you can spin stories to while away your time but we can't" they say while trying to snatch my books along with trying to bow and save their arses from my hot potato Canon.

If you have been asked questions or faced people who were being stereotypical, do share your experiences :)

I'm calling out  not just to writers/authors. If  you are into something different and faced questions from society that made you roll your eyes xD

I would love to hear your encounters ^_^

Or else you can share your friends/cousins encounters 😂 xD
