My opinion on whitwashing/blackwashing
I think neither is ok but there's a difference in cosplaying and drawings.
I mainly talk about blackwashing btw.
White washing is taking representation away, black washing is fake representation. Like, Make Miruko or Rock Lock white? You're taking the only dark skinned people away. Making Jirou or Momo black? It's fake representation and "fixing art" which everyone in the art community knows is a mega no no.
Like, I see art where they make pale characters dark skinned with vitiligo. Yes give people with that skin condition representation but don't make a character who is canonically pale, have that skin condition. Make an oc with it!
Like I have an oc named Dove. Her skin condition is because of Rumi's quirk and to make her look a bit similar to Hawks.
With characters like Mina or Bubble Girl? It's ok to do either. Make her pale, make her dark for a quirkless au? I think it's completely fine because her skin tone wouldn't make sense in a quirkless au.
If you want a dark character, make one! It doesn't mean dark people can't cosplay light skinned characters! If you're black and wanna cosplay Kaminari? GO FOR IT! Black and wanna be Bakugo? I'd love to see it!
More on blackwashing. Characters like Mikasa, who's race is important to the story? Drawing her as black? Ok let's back it up. That's a no no.
White washing? Please don't. If you wanna be Miruko and you're white, do it, no one is gonna stop you. Don't draw it tho. There's a difference between purposely making a character white and wanting to cosplay them even tho you're Not their race. If you put on makeup to make yourself look like her, you're doing black face which is extremely offensive. No one is gonna judge you if you just cosplay her.
There's a difference between purposely making a character a different race and wanting to cosplay that character despite not being their race.
