We're In Trouble Now
*Jacklyn's POV*
After the whole Broken-Ribs-and-Dr.Pepper incident, Avis and I have been keeping our heads low, but I guess I could explain some of the highlights from the past three days.
First off, I came with the best ship name ever for Denise and Chubb. It was over lunch and Avis was explaining what a ship name was to Brighton. Derick and Leslie were there too. Luckily, Ariel was helping Denise with some of the paperwork that came with running the ward and left us a whole lunch free from her presence.
"But why would anyone create such a thing? It sound absolutely ridiculous," Brighton protested through a huge mouthful of food. I graced him with a blank face and said, "Your face while speaking with that much food in your mouth is ridiculous." Leslie giggled at that and Derick and Avis cracked a grin. Brighton merely scowled at me before shrugging and going back to the discussion at hand. "Besides, how do you even come up with this so called 'ship name'?"
"Oh that's easy," Avis said breezily, waving her left hand airily, then winced as her ribs ached. I had offered to sneak out to the truck again to get her some Tylenol, but she thought it was best that neither of us was seen near it for the time being. "If it's so easy," Brighton challenged, "why don't you make one?" Avis raised an eyebrow at him. "Make one?" She repeated. The boy nodded and jabbed his fork at her. "Go on, make a 'ship name' for us."
This was the best opportunity I was ever going to get. Before Avis could protest I leaned forward eagerly and rattled off a list of ship names.
"I think Brivis would be cute for you two. Or maybe even Aton. Oh! What about-"
"-That's not what he meant and you know it!" Snapped Avis, now glowing a scarlet red. Brighton was turning beat red and Derick and Leslie were having a hard time choking back their laughter. I feigned an innocent look. "No? Well if that's true, what did you mean Brighton?" He cleared his throat a few times before he attempted to talk. "I meant make one up or 'us'," he gestured to everyone in the conversation, "an example for all of us."
I pretended to have an "Aha" moment as my Biology teacher last year called it and resisted the urge to show the smile threatening to break my face. "Oh, well..." I trailed off and thought for a few moments, thinking of all the couples I could use. I was a little hesitant at using any for the ones who are the most obvious to make, mainly afraid that somehow word would reach Halt and he would come after me, but after a few seconds I picked the least threatening couple.
"Dubb." I stated simply. Everyone stared at me confused. "Dubb?" Derick questioned and I nodded confirmation. "For Denise and Chubb." Everyone suddenly saw the sense in it and nodded. "Makes sense I guess," Brighton muttered, still red in the face. "Reminds me of double," Avis said frowning and I gasped excitedly, taking my ship name further. "Double Trouble!" I shouted excitedly and Avis's eyes widened and we both fell prey to the excited feeling of fangirl's who just came up with the perfect ship name. After a while we both calmed down and the others wisely didn't push the subject any further.
After that, there was nothing of true interest that had happened besides lessons. History was fascinating, math was boring and English was down-right frustrating, but I won't bore you with the details.
Another interesting thing was the departure of the three Rangers for the annual Ranger Gathering. At the time, we had just gotten up and at a chance, looked out a window to see them saying their temporary good byes before departing for the Gathering grounds. That's about all we got to see before Denise berated us for not paying attention and that we were going to be late for our lessons, as if we really cared.
But, all of that was yesterday and now, we were roaming the streets of Wensely Village. Why you might ask if you were actually here and not reading the words in my head as if I'm imagining them in a book published on Wattpad? Well, the wards had a special trip today to go and explore the village, kinda like a field trip. Of course when I told Brighton that he looked at me with his normal expression of confusion.
This all leaves us to where we are now before I had gone back in time(again) to explain the whole Double Trouble thing. Turns out, Brighton hadn't lost his parents at a young age and had actually been starting to learn the craft his father was in, which turned out to be making weapons for the Redmont knights since his father was a blacksmith in the Barons service. Due to this, Brighton had a good amount of coins to buy us- me, Avis, himself, Derick and Leslie some food at a small tavern of sorts. I don't know the name of it, but I know its the one Alyss, Horace, Jenny and Will had gone too after Will had killed the Kalkara.
We were talking and laughing and having a pretty good time about it too. Even reminded me of the time in 9th grade of how me and a few good friends would walk to the snow cone store right by the junior high we went to and get some snow cones. Once we got them we would run across the street to the Churches Chicken right across from it to get some awesome honey biscuits and chicken with gravy and french fries and soda. Thinking of that brought me down a little bit, but when Avis jogged me in the ribs with her elbow, I shook it off and retaliated by flinging some vegetables at her.
Eventually, Brighton, Avis and I left Derick and Leslie to enjoy dancing with the other occupants in the tavern as we left to go explore the rest of the village. We walked alongside each other, laughing and being disgusted as Brighton let out a particularly loud burp. "What?" He said innocently while looking at us, "Better out than in." I exchanged a look with Avis. Little did Brighton know that he just quoted Halt from the Tournament at Gorlan. "Not for those of us that are out here with it," Avis and I said together with extremely straight faces. He seemed a little taken aback by that, but didn't say anything.
We all decided to head over to the meeting spot a little bit early since it was almost time for all of us to head back to the ward. As we past a few open market stalls, we saw Denise struggling a little with some of the younger kids who couldn't understand why they couldn't buy the toys they wanted. Doing are best not to laugh out loud as we past, we hurried along down the road.Just as Avis was starting to question Brighton about everything in sight, the poor boy found an escape route by waving at a short, blonde haired woman who was serving a farm some juice on the porch of what looked to be a restaurant. No way, the Heaped Platter! And I'll bet almost anything that that is Jenny! I turned to talk about this with Avis but she had turned a bit red and suddenly stopped talking. Huh, wonder what got into her. Brighton on the other hand, took the chance and waved a greeting at Jenny.
"Afternoon Miss Jenny!" He said, steering off the road and going over to the porch. Jenny smiled at him and waved in return, ladle in hand. "Good afternoon Brighton. I take it Denise took the wards for a trip to the village?" Brighton nodded. "Yes she did. We were just heading over to the meeting spot since our time is almost up. When he said "we", Jenny looked past him to where Avis and I were hanging back. She looked at me curiously, but when her eyes shifted to Avis, they narrowed into something borderline suspicion. Okay...whats with that? "Who are your friends Brighton?" He jerked with some surprise as if just remembering we were still there. "Oh," he said somewhat sheepishly, "this is Avis and Jacklyn. There not from around here and the Baron is letting them stay in the ward. Ha! More like keeping us prisoner.
"Well, we better get going. Wont be long before it'll be time to go back to the ward. Bye Miss Jenny!" He waved in farewell and Jenny did the same, smiling at us- including Avis this time- before disappearing back into the Heaped Platter to no doubt whack poor Rafe on the head with her ladle.
A little while later, we began to question Brighton's ability to navigate the back way to the meeting place. "Your lost aren't you?" I said, crossing my arms and giving him a hard look. He stood up straighter and practically snapped at me. "I know just where we are."
"Your lost."
"Are not."
"Are too."
"Are not."
"Are too."
"Are not!"
"Are too!"
"Are-!"
"Will you two cut it out already?" Shouted Avis.
Before either Brighton or myself could tell her off for arguments sake, a loud crash came from one of the buildings a little ways ahead of us. The sun was starting to set behind us, casting long shadows in the alley we were in. Unconsciously, we all took a half-step back. There was another loud crash. Only this time, it was accompanied by angered voices.
"Be quiet you fool! The plan was to get away unnoticed!" Hissed a low voice from up ahead. Two dark figures suddenly came into sight. Each was large in size, almost like a human bull. Not only that, but they also carried two large sacks each that emitted a loud jingling sound each time it was moved. Almost like coins...
"Hey!" They had apparently turned to look in both directions before trying to make a get away, and in the mean time, saw us. Avis and Brighton back away another two steps this time. I just stood there like an idiot. One of the goons shifted his load and drew and long, very dangerous looking dagger and started to advance on us. "Can't have you three running about telling everyone what we've been up too." That got me moving. "Run!" I shouted, turning on my heel to sprint out of there. Only to stop short in terror. Two more guys had appeared behind us, blocking the exit.
To quote the Star Wars guy: IT'S A TRAP.
That's when everything went dark. I mean, I know the sun was setting and all but dang is it getting dark fast. Wait, why is the ground rushing up to my face, and when did I start having this horrible headache?
Oh wait a minute...
