Recess And Imaginary Rocks

*Jacklyn's POV*

I woke to the sound of quiet breathing and the weak rays of the rising sun. Getting up, I searched around for a moment for my glasses until my warm hand connected with the cold metal of the frames. Unfolding them, I put them on my face and blinked to let my eyes adjust to the sudden clarity.

Looking around the room, I came to the realization that I was the first one up. Huh, must be getting used to the time zone. Getting out of my nice warm bed, I nearly jumped straight back into it when my bare feet connected to the freezing cold stones of the floor. Hissing quietly to myself, I slowly stood on the floor before dashing to the trunk and grabbed a new dress for the day. As much as I wanted to, I resisted the urge to grab some spare cloths from my back pack and struggled into the dress. Honestly, these things were so constricting.

When that was done and over with, I walked to Avis's bed and gently shook her shoulder. After a few tries and many muttered words of protest, she woke up.

"Morning sleepy head," I greeted with a smile. She glared at me before flopping back onto the bed and groaned. "I shouldn't have done that." I looked at her curiously. "You shouldn't have done what?" She didn't look at me, but rather spoke through her pillow. "Flop back down. It hurt." I rose an eyebrow, well tried anyway. "Well aren't you a fragile flower."

She grumbled at me but continued to lay there like a bump on a log. Eventually she got up and slowly changed into a dress. Might have had something to do with me throwing it at her, might not. When that was done, I looked around the place, only seeing the dark forms of sleeping girls. Avis glared at me, I ignored her. She continued to glare at me and I looked at her with a question in my eyes. "Can I help you with something?" "Why did you wake me up when no one else is up?" I shrugged, "I didn't want to be the only one up." Avis huffed and laid back down on the bed, groaning as she did so.

Shrugging to myself, I went to where I had placed my back pack last night and took out my phone in its wood case trimmed with silver. Of course it was made of plastic, but it looked neat and the plastic was very expensive. Clicking the power button, I noticed that the time was 6:30 in the morning and took a guess that not everyone was up at the moment. Sitting on my bed, I fished around in my purse for my horrible-as-hay earbuds and put them into the phone. Since my phone was old-ish and used before I got it, I only had enough room for one game. And Skype and Wattpad. My life would not be complete without those.

Putting my earbuds in so as not to disturb the sleeping girls and a cranky as heck Avis, I started to play Blades of Brim. I had to stop a few times because one of the Flappers would swoop down and get me before I had time to react after I had just rolled into a Goon. Or my phone glitched and caused my character to move to slowly and get me squashed by a Crusher. Stupid giant Crushers. Before I knew it, everyone was up and moving about. Except Avis, she was still laying like a dead fish on her bed.

Taking out the earbuds, I wrapped them around my phone and put it back into my back pack. Getting off my bed, I went to Avis's side and gently shook her to make sure she hadn't fallen asleep again. An annoyed groan and an angry swat at my hand told me she was still awake. Making sure she got up this time, I grabbed her arm and pulled her out of bed, forcing her to stand.

Once that was done, I lead her to the door just as it swung open. Denise stood there staring at me and I stared back. "Morning," I say with a smile as I lead Avis behind me out the door and into the hallway. We eventually reached the Mess Hall. I honestly have no idea of it's called that or not, but that's what I'm calling it. We got our plates of food and sat down in the same place as yesterday.

Slowly, and I do mean slowly, the other wards filed in and started to talk and eat their breakfast. Amongst them was Brighton and Derrick, who sat down with us. Both of the boys pried at where we went yesterday, but Avis and I didn't tell them much and eventually, the gave up asking.

I'll try not to bore all of you with the details, but today was boring. We had two lessons today, History and English. History was interesting since it was new for us and it held our attention. Lunch was the same as yesterday, literally, the same food. English on the other hand was frustrating since we had to write and I could only print. Throughout that whole time though, I was worried about Avis. She was uncharacteristically quiet and constantly wincing at the slightest movement. I tried, and failed, to get her to talk, but she remained quiet.

When we got out of English though, I temporarily forgot worrying about Avis since something awesome happened. We were just leaving and as we tried to go straight, back to the Mess Hall, Brighton called us back and had us follow the rest of the group. "Where are we going?" I questioned. He looked at us and grinned. "The courtyard. It's free time." I exchanged a look with Avis before asking my next question. "What's free time?" Brighton shrugged, "You know, free time. Our studies are done so now we can go outside and play." My jaw literally dropped. There's recess here? I haven't had that in four years! "Are serious?" I practically shouted at him.

Brighton took a step back and help his hands up in surrender. "Yes, didn't you two have free time wherever you came from?" Avis and I shook our heads. "I haven't had it in four years," I stated bluntly, Avis nodding in agreement. It was Brighton's turn to drop his jaw. "Just what kind of school did you go to?" "A very big, very long school. One with 9 hours of work and the only break bring lunch." "Mine is about the same, though it's not that big, but it does have excellent classes." Avis put in. Still staring at us in a mixture of awe and pity, Brighton lead us to the courtyard where all the other wards were already running about and playing. At a call, Brighton waved us good-bye and ran over to a group of boys as they looked like they got ready for some sort of game, but other matters had gotten a hold of my attention.

Avis was holding her sides and had a permanent face of pain carved out, wincing with each step. Enough was enough. "Okay," I say, stepping in front of her and blocking her path, "what's wrong with you? You've been acting like this all day!" At first she didn't say anything, but I guess she realized that silence wasn't going to help her."

"My ribs hurt okay! I think I broke it or something from last night." Oh. I just stared at her. "You only telling me this now?" I whispered-shouted for some reason. "Why are you so upset about it? It's not like you can do anything about it. Wounded. Honestly she wounds me. "Yes, Actually there is." Before she could even open her mouth to ask what, I very discretely stick my foot out, causing her to fall hard and flat on her face. She glared up at me fiercely as she clutched her sides even harder, groaning in pain.

"What did you do that for?!" I shrugged, pulling her up. "For show. People are watching us and we need to come up with a good excuse to get you to the infirmary. Like what I just did. You tripped and fell on a rock and you think you hurt your ribs." Avis just stared at me before responding. "If you hadn't just put me through a lot of pain, I would call you a genius." I grinned in reply. "Thanks Avis, I do try."

With that, we went over to Denise. As soon as we told the lie, she fell for it and gave us permission to go to the infirmary. That's when problem two of the day decided to show itself. We had no clue at which way to go.

After wandering the halls for what seemed like ages, we ran into a familiar face. Literally.

I was just rounding a corner when I collided with someone else, sending them staggering and me falling flat on my butt. Wincing, I got up and went to make sure that I hadn't run into anyone important, and discovered that it was Will. "Sorry! Didn't see you coming," I said somewhat sheepishly, realizing at how ridiculous that sounded. Of course I wouldn't see him coming, he's a Ranger after all. He merely waved the apology away. "It's alright, no harm done. What are you two doing here anyway? Aren't the wards supposed to be having their free time right about now?" He asked, glancing between the two of us. We nodded. "Yes, but I think I broke a rib from last night," Avis mumbled. "Didn't help that Jacklyn tripped my on purpose," Avis said with a glare in my direction.

"Well I'm sorry, but I didn't see you come up with a better idea at the time!" I said, spreading my arms in a way of "why are you blaming me?" Her glare darkened further. "That's because you didn't give me the chance to!" She accused. Before this could escalate any further, Will steps in. "Okay, I'm sure this would make a great argument later on, but for now, let's focus on getting you to the infirmary."

With that, Will lead us there, Avis and I walking slightly behind him. At a sudden thought, I sped up a bit to be level with him and he cast a glance in my direction, silently asking a question. "Thanks," I somewhat whispered. "For last night, and now." He merely shrugged. "Your welcome, though I guess this makes it twice you owe me." I considered the point before nodding. "True enough."

•Eh, I'm sorry you all had to read that, not exactly the most interesting chapter. Next one will be a lot more interesting XD
