I Confuse My Childhood Heros
*Avis' POV*
My eyes widened in horror and I quickly grabbed my iphone out of my back pocket. Mom Calling, flashed across the screen, lighting up the dully lit room. Will quickly dropped my hand and backed up slightly, a look of curiosity and panic filling his eyes.
"What in Gorlog's breath and nose hairs is that awful noise!" A gruff voice called out. A short ranger a few inches taller then me, I'm a short person, stepped out of the shadows. He seemed to melt out of the wall, giving off an uncanny feeling. I instantly knew the person from the many years I spent studying him. Halt the Ranger. He threw back his cowl and scowled my way. My obnoxious phone still blaring the 21st century song. Many people covered their ears in fright more then the sound. I quickly swiped the ignore button, causing it to go silent.
"What was that thing?" Will asked in horror. The whole room had their eyes trained on me. I felt slightly naked in my shorts and my sweatshirt. Yes, I'm that person that wears shorts and sweatshirts when it's cold and jeans and t-shirts when it's hot. I'm weird like that.Every other women in the room wore dresses that covered most of their skin, especially since their dresses reached their ankles.
"Um...It's my phone." I said holding it up casually for him to see. The screen was still lit with my background picture of me and my horse, Blaze, who I happened to name after the Ranger Gilan's horse. Another ranger stepped out from the shadows, one I hadn't noticed yet. Three in all. He was tall as he approached me and carefully took my phone from my hands. "Careful!" I said as he held it loosely in his hand.
"What does it do? Is it magic? Is she a witch?" I heard a women ask. She came forward and held the rangers arm.
"I don't know, Jenny." The ranger said. Gosh, he was handsome.
"We must take it to the Baron, Gilan." Will told the ranger. Oh, he was Gilan. Figures.
"Take the girl as well. She has some explaining to do." Halt growled. Will stepped forward and grabbed my arm, pulling me towards the exit.
"Let go of me!" I said harshly. He wasn't about too, only continued to pull me out. Once we were outside, Gilan and Halt joined us. The air was crisp, felt almost like September.
"Do you mind telling us your name, Miss?" Will asked. I glared at him and pulled free of his grip, even though he let me go.
"It's Avis." I said.
"Do you have a last name?" Halt asked. I panicked slightly. My last name wouldn't exactly fit the presence of this era. I must have hesitated too long, because Will rose an eyebrow.
"Are you an orphan?" He asked.
"No." I said a little too quickly.
"Run away from home?" Gilan questioned.
"Alright! Enough with the questions. The baron can question her himself." Halt said. I let out a grateful sigh. Halt grabbed my arm and they led me up to the castle. It was a dull silence as I awaited my upcoming visit with a long since dead baron. I glance from my feet to my phone, which was still in Gilans hand.
"Can I have my phone back?" I asked. Gilan rose an eyebrow.
"I'm not sure I trust you with it." He said cautiously. He tapped the screen several times, staring at the smooth surface. He turned it around to see my bejeweled case, blinged out with glitter and fake diamonds.
"Please? I paid for it myself, and if anything happens to it my parents will kill me." I pleaded.
"What is it for?" Will asked curiously.
"Umm... internet, games, texting. Some people call, but I hate calling. You actually have to talk to people!" I exclaimed.
"What's internet? And texting? How can you call someone on a box?" Will fired the questions quickly.
"Can I ask a question of my own real quick? What year is it?"
"The year of our Lord, 650. Why do you ask?" Gilman answered. I swallowed hard, finally coming to a realization as to what had happened.
"No reason. Can I please check my phone?" Gilan held it up, screen facing me. I turned it on as the rangers squinted at it's brightness. "Sorry." I turned the brightness down and checked my service. There was absolutely no service at all. "Mom must have called me right before I came here, so the call still went through. It won't happen again."
"Enough with your fancy talk. Baron will want to see you. I imagine he'll be quite interested."

After a short walk up to the castle, I found myself in the middle of the barons personal quarters. Apparently it was eleven at night, so he had gone to bed. The man stood in front of me in a night shirt and unruly hair.
"This better be good, Halt." Baron said. Halt handed Arald my phone, and the men began to mess with it again. Tapping the screen to see if they could turn it on like I had.
"This was found on the girl. It produced a loud sound, disrupting the customers at Jenny's restaurant." Halt said. "Some believe it is sorcery. We thought we ought to get her away before the villagers broke out their pitch forks."
"What is it?" He asked. I let out a deep sigh, irritated I have to explain to everyone what a phone was. I'd never come across this predicament, so it was new. I wished Jacklyn was here, because she could probably whip up some witty reply, leaving them with more questions than before. I was boring and had to explain it the long way.
"It's...well it's something everyone where I'm from has. I've never had to explain what it is." I shuffled my feet trying to think of what to say.
"And where are you from?" Baron asked.
"Nevada."
"Where is that?" Will asked curiously.
"Oh, you know. United States of America. Nevada's on the west coast between Utah and California." I muttered. I knew they wouldn't understand, but I needed to give them answer. I wasn't exactly up to making up a back story. Halt rose an eyebrow, and Will and Gilan exchanged confused glances.
"Do you know where that is Halt?" Baron asked. Halt shook his head.
"Never heard of it." Baron looked ready to say something else when a knock sounded at the door.
"Enter." He said. A guard opened the door, allowing two other guards to step in, leading none other than Jacklyn.
