Lakes and dreams

The room was small, and quiet. It was mostly bare, but it's owner never noticed this. Said owner slept on the bed he'd created, the room around him a mere representation of his need for security and and stability. He refused to acknowledge this need while he was "awake", but now, as he tried to put our body to sleep, his need was made more obvious.

The usually vibrant green-yellow flames in the fireplace, which existed in the corner farthest from the bed,  were now a light blue as it burned calmly, flickering only rarely as it watched the child sleep. The fire finally decided that both body and mask had fallen asleep, a fact he felt reflect through every torch, hearth, and false-sun hidden throughout the building. Each one dimming to a low, light blue or silver color, and lessening in intensity until the entire place was dimly lit with colors of the night.

An hour later, the fire decided it was finally safe to move. Only the sleeping boy on the bed knew what the fires throughout the place truly were, and so only he knew where the being that fueled his magic existed. Shades soul stepped out of the fireplace, careful to leave no trace of ash or dust on the hardwood flooring or the carpet that surrounded the bed. The he slowly, and carefully, lowered himself on top of the sleeping mask that he had formed to rule the body while he slept.

As he made skin to skin contact with shade, his fiery form began to deep into the boy, the absorption happening faster and faster until he suddenly popped out of the body that his soul felt tied too. He looked around the room, the dull-grey colors reminding him that he had given up his right to truly live long ago. Shade was his own mind, only relying on the soul for stability and fuel. He had accepted this long ago, even formed his body this way intentionally, never realizing he would so desperately miss the colorful world he'd known for so many millennia.

He pushed the thoughts and wishes aside, refusing to acknowledge his regret. He wouldn't even know he had regrets if it hadn't been for the girl he was now trying to rescue. Shade had tried to tell him something about a lake all day, but he had refused to listen to the boy, knowing that the demoness was was always close; or that was the excuse he had given himself. The truth was that he had been sulking, and now he regretted that as well.

Still, shade had mentioned a lake, and that had sparked his memory. She had sent those messages from inside a cave, and she had been kept inside a similar cave. The soul had been searching the places she remembered, but that had been the result of desperate, furious, unthinking need. He had given in to the primal urges he'd placed inside himself when he arrived on the planet, so long ago in his first life.

He was grateful that those urges and changes remained, grateful that he was something different from the usual soul. It meant he would remain on this planet long after life had left it behind, unless life left the planet to go somewhere else; he'd follow it, then.

He knew that the kind of caves she had been hidden in could only exist around water. Lakes held a water.
