Chapter 9: Red 🍒

Alright WarmCupofSparkles12 your time has come to shine! Go get 'em girl!

"Virginia! Virginia! Please tell me you left your fedora in the dressing room!" One of the panicked crew members panted as he ran over to her. "Oh shoot! I did!" Virginia dashed off to the small room situated in the middle of the backstage and quickly placed the black hat over her head. She gave off very hipster chic with comfortable black pants and a white t-shirt with Black and Red writing that spelled out "Not A Lot Going On At The Moment!" with a set of red sunglasses also resting on the counter.

Although she was excited to perform the Red segment, she lowkey worried if she wouldn't be able to master the quick outfit changes during the middle of the show. Luckily, hers wasn't so complicated as she was also wearing a comfortable red and black bedazzled outfit that was eager to turn some heads in her direction. "You look just like a pop star!" Maisie squealed and hugged her from behind. "Mai! You scared me!" Virginia chuckled.

"Well, there's no way I'm sending you off onto the stage without telling you how awesome you are!" Maisie smiled. "Same with us! When one of our sisters goes onstage, we give her the proper See you Soon!" Mckenna nodded. Virginia grinned as she hugged each of them, telling them they were the best sisters she could ever ask for. "Well you're the best sis we could ask for too!" Dusk chuckled.

"Virginia! Two-minute warning!" The frantic crew member tapped her shoulder before rushing off. "That's my cue, I'll see you soon girls!" She waved as she disappeared into the smoke. The sound of a squeaking chair and an old-timey radio playing music briefly played on the speakers, exciting the crowd with wonder for the next song of the night.

Virginia: It feels like a perfect night
To dress up like hipsters
And make fun of our exes
Ah-ah, ah-ah

It feels like a perfect night
For breakfast at midnight
To fall in love with strangers
Ah-ah, ah-ah

Yeah! We're happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time
It's miserable and magical, oh yeah
Tonight's the night when we forget about the deadlines
It's time, oh-oh

I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22!
Everything will be alright if you keep me next to you
You don't know about me, but I'll bet you want to
Everything will be alright if we just keep dancing like we're 22

22!

It seems like one of those nights
This place is too crowded
Too many cool kids
Ah ah, ah ah

It seems like one of those nights
We ditched the whole scene
And end up dreaming, instead of sleeping!

Yeah, we're happy, free, confused, and lonely in the best way
It's miserable and magical, oh yeah
Tonight's the night when we forget about the heartbreaks
It's time, oh-oh

(Hey!) I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright if you keep me next to you
You don't know about me, but I'll bet you want to
Everything will be alright (alright) if we just keep dancing like we're 22!

(Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
22! (I don't know about you)
22!
22!

It feels like one of those nights!
We ditched the whole scene
It feels like one of those nights
We won't be sleeping

It feels like one of those nights!
You look like bad news
I gotta have you!
I gotta have you!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah!

I don't know about you (I don't know about you) but I'm feeling 22!
Everything will be alright if you keep me next to you!
You don't know about me (you don't know about me) but I'll bet you want to
Everything will be alright if we just keep dancing like we're 22!

Oh-whoa, oh, oh, oh
22! (dancing like)
22! (yeah, yeah)
22! (yeah, yeah, yeah)

It feels like one of those nights
We ditched the whole scene!
It feels like one of those nights
We won't be sleeping!

It feels like one of those nights
You look like bad news!
I gotta have you!
I gotta have you!

The moment the song ended, the backup dancers pulled back the Velcro on Virginia's outfit and revealed her beautifully crafted red and black party dress that shimmered like a thousand stars. Everyone in the stadium was screaming in amazement, especially the Crew, who had only seen her second outfit once during the fittings. "SLAY QUEEN!" Maisie shouted to her as Dusk and Mckenna cheered her on.

Virginia: I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying, "This is it, I've had enough"
Cause like we hadn't seen each other in a month
When you said you needed space
What?

Then you come around again and say
"Baby, I miss you, and I swear I'm gonna change, trust me"
Remember how that lasted for a day?
I say, "I hate you", we break up, you call me, "I love you"

Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
We called it off again last night but
Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
This time, I'm telling you, I'm telling you

We are never, ever, ever getting back together
We are never, ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together!

Like, ever!

I'm really gonna miss you picking fights
And me falling for it, screaming that I'm right
And you would hide away and find your peace of mind
With some indie record that's much cooler than mine

Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
You called me up again tonight but
Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
This time, I'm telling you, I'm telling you!

We (we) are never, ever, ever getting back together
We are never, ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together!

Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh (yeah!)
Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh (yeah!)
Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh (yeah!)
Oh-oh-oh!

I used to think that we were forever, ever
And I used to say, never say never!

Ugh, so he calls me up, and he's like, "I still love you"
And I'm like, I'm just, I mean, this is exhausting
You know, like we are never getting back together
Like, ever (no!)

We are never, ever, ever getting back together
We are never, ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together!

We (ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)
Getting back together
We (ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh), oh
Getting back together

You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together!

Virginia: Once upon a time, a few mistakes ago
I was in your sights, you got me alone
You found me, you found me, you found me, e-e-e-e

I guess you didn't care and I guess I liked that
And when I fell hard, you took a step back
Without me, without me, without me, e-e-e-e

And he's long gone when he's next to me
And I realize the blame is on me

Cause I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
Til you put me down, oh

I knew you were trouble when you walked in!
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground!

Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble

And the saddest fear
Comes creeping in
That you never loved me
Or her, or anyone, or anything

Yeah!

I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been (never been)
Til you put me down, oh!

I knew you were trouble when you walked in!
(Knew it right there) so shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been (ooh!)
Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground!

Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble

I knew you were trouble when you walked in!
Trouble, trouble, trouble!
I knew you were trouble when you walked in!
Trouble, trouble, trouble!

While she was singing, Virginia never wanted to imagine herself being heartbroken and sad by someone she thought she trusted. But performing the break-up songs was able to put herself into the shoes of someone who did experience a heartbreak, of course it was a bit sad but at the same time, she was able to express those imaginary heartbroken feelings to a crowd where there were bound to be a few people who had their hearts broken once or twice before and needed those songs to heal their aching hearts.

Not only did it comfort those aching souls, but it also confused both Klaus Baudelaire and Will Turner, who were sitting a few rows from the first. "Did we do something wrong to her?" the pirate questioned, turning the boy in glasses. "I-I don't know! I hope we didn't!" He panted with worry. His sister Violet placed a warm and comforting hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure you didn't do anything wrong. At least you anyway, Klaus," Violet eyed Will up and down. "What? You don't trust me?" Will questioned.

Violet just stayed silent as her eyes focused back on the stage, feeling Sunny tug at her dress. "Oh, you can't see! Come here," she scooped Sunny into her arms, and through her headphones, Sunny could hear the starting notes of the next song while Virginia slipped on a long red glitter coat, feeling the cold night breeze blow past her.

Virginia: I walked through the door with you
The air was cold
But something 'bout it felt like home somehow
And I, left my scarf there at your sister's house
And you've still got it in your drawer even now

Oh, your sweet disposition
And my wide-eyed gaze
We're singing in the car, getting lost upstate
Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place
And I can picture it after all these days

And I know it's long gone and that magic's not here no more
And I might be okay, but I'm not fine at all

Cause there we are again on that little town street
You almost ran the red 'cause you were looking over at me
Wind in my hair, I was there
I remember it all too well

Photo album on the counter
Your cheeks were turning red
You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin-sized bed
And your mother's telling stories 'bout you on the tee-ball team
You told me 'bout your past thinking your future was me

And you were tossing me the car keys
"F- the patriarchy" keychain on the ground
We were always skipping town
And I was thinking on the drive down
Any time now, he's gonna say it's love
You never called it what it was

'Til we were dead and gone and buried
Check the pulse and come back swearing it's the same
After three months in the grave
And then you wondered where it went to as I reached for you
But all I felt was shame, and you held my lifeless frame

And I know it's long gone, and there was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to

Cause there we are again in the middle of the night
We're dancing 'round the kitchen in the refrigerator light
Down the stairs, I was there
I remember it all too well

And there we are again when nobody had to know
You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath
Sacred prayer and we'd swear
To remember it all too well

Well, maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece 'til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there
I remember it all too well

And you call me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here
Cause I remember it all, all, all

They say all's well that ends well, but I'm in a new hell
Every time you double-cross my mind

You said if we had been closer in age, maybe it would have been fine
And that made me want to die

The idea you had of me, who was she?
A never-needy ever, lovely jewel whose shine reflects on you

Not weeping in a party bathroom
Some actress asking me what happened
You, that's what happened, you

You who charmed my dad with self-effacing jokes
Sipping coffee like you're on a late night show
But then he watched me watch the front door all night, willing you to come
And he said, "It's supposed to be fun turning 21"

Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralyzed by it
I'd like to be my old self again
But I'm still trying to find it

After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things, and I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf from that very first week
Cause it reminds you of innocence, and it smells like me
You can't get rid of it
Cause you remember it all too well, yeah

Cause there we are again when I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing you've ever known
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well

Wind in my hair, you were there, you remember it all
Down the stairs, you were there, you remember it all
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well

And I was never good at telling jokes, but the punchline goes
"I'll get older, but your lovers stay my age"
From when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones
I'm a soldier who's returning half her weight
And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?
Just between us, did the love affair maim you too?

Cause in this city's barren cold, I still remember the first fall of snow
And how it glistened as it fell
I remember it all too well

Just between us, did the love affair maim you all too well?
Just between us, do you remember it all too well?
Just between us, I remember (just between us) it all too well

Wind in my hair, I was there, I was there
Down the stairs, I was there, I was there
Sacred prayer, I was there, I was there

It was rare, you remember it
Wind in my hair, I was there, I was there
Down the stairs, I was there, I was there
Sacred prayer, I was there, I was there

It was rare, you remember it
Wind in my hair, I was there, I was there
Down the stairs, I was there, I was there
Sacred prayer, I was there, I was there
It was rare, you remember it

As Virginia stared into the crowd looking for her two loves, and she found both of them with apologetic and hopeful smiles. But with just her eyes and a loving smile, she silently assured them that they did nothing wrong to her, and that they were all good. And even if they weren't doing good, she knew the girls would definitely knock some sense into them.
