Why The Lord of The Rings Is Better Than The Hobbit

So you ask your friend: "Hey, have you seen The Lord of The Rings?"

They answer: "Oh yeah! The Hobbit! I love that series!"

Then you start to get angry but you have to stay calm in front of this nonbeliever and you say: "No, I mean The Lord of The Rings trilogy. Not the Hobbit."

They answer again with a straight face: "Dude. It's called the Hobbit."

Then you rip their head off.

Does this scenario ever happen to you? It's happened to me a lot more times than I can remember. I mean, The Hobbit is a decent trilogy, except the biggest reason why I hate it is that it COMPLETELY DROWNED OUT The Lord of The Rings! It's like The Lord of The Rings don't exist anymore even though it is far better in every way! Here are some reasons why:

1. Character development. In the Hobbit, Bilbo sets off for The Misty Mountain with twelve strange Dwarves. You don't expect him to know every single one of these Dwarves instantly but you assume that by the end of the movie, they will all become great friends. Yet by the end of the ENTIRE trilogy, you STILL don't even know half of the Dwarves names! They've been around for about nine hours of screen time and a lot of them STILL seem like minor characters! Now let's take The Lord of The Rings. You know Aragorn. He's the king of Gondor that ran away from his own destiny and became a ranger known as Strider. You know Legolas. An Elf from Mirkwood that decided to join the fellowship. He likes joking around with Gimli as you can tell from when they try and beat each other in orc-kills. You know Gimli. He's the son of Gloin (Yes, from the Hobbit) and a great, well-respected Dwarf warrior. You know all four of the Hobbits, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. You know Boromir. The ring-obsessed son of the steward of Gondor. You all of course know Gandalf. All of The Lord of The Rings characters has a backstory and a great personality while only some of the Hobbit characters possess that.

2. Movie plot. So the Hobbit book was originally supposed to be a kid's book. Was the Hobbit movie a kid's movie? No. It is rated PG-13 for violence and gore, alcohol/drugs/smoking, and for frightening images. So it's a kid's book turned into a teenager's movie? Yep. Also the plot of this movie is quite different from the plot of the books. Throughout the entire book, there was never a single orc, but in the movie, they seem to just be popping out of every little hole in the ground! The main antagonist of the books was just the threat of the goblin army, but in the movie, it was Azog, the pale orc. Now the movie did get one thing right and that was the fact that Azog killed Thorin Oakenshield's father and the whole 'oakenshield' backstory as well. But in the book, Azog is actually a goblin! Even in the end of the trilogy, The Battle of Five Armies part in the books and the movies are completely different from one another! The five armies in the movie are: Men, Elves, Dwarves, Azog's army of orcs, and Bolg's army of orcs and goblins, while the five armies in the book are: Men, Dwarves, Elves, wargs, and goblins! I think that The Lord of The Rings trilogy sticks a lot closer to the book storyline, except, of course, they completely removed the Tom Bombadil scene, which is where Frodo and the rest of the Hobbits get their swords, instead of from Aragorn.

3. Entertainment Value. Now, I won't deny it, both movies are exciting to watch, but again, both the movie plot and the character development greatly contribute to entertainment and since The Lord of The Rings trilogy has a lot more of both, it is a more entertaining movie series. Also it seems to me like The Hobbit movie is completely made of fighting scenes, which can be exciting but it really needs more dialog in general. There is barely any dialog compared to The Lord of The Rings and dialog is one of the best ways to express a character's personality.

Those are just some of my reasons on why I think The Lord of The Rings is better than The Hobbit, but don't get me wrong; Peter Jackson is awesome, I just think that he could have done The Hobbit movies a bit better. I hope you agree with me!

Jeez, I just realized how long that rant was...
