Star Trek Short Story

As the title says, this is a Star Trek short story. If you haven't seen Star Trek Voyager then this will most likely be somewhat confusing. So let's get this show on the road, shall we? And for once, maybe twice, I'm going to try and use 3rd person. There is a photo of her uniform above.

A woman stood surrounded by a group of people, watching in awe as she spun a six-foot pole. The pole, not actually a pole at all, was a flag with a teal fabric. She stood around 5'2 with blonde hair pinned into a bun to keep it out of her face. With brown eyes she had blue eyeshadow and eyeliner. The group around her applauded as she tossed the flag around, catching with ease. With one final triple toss she ended the show and the crowd dispersed, finding a new source of entertainment which happened to be a box appearing from nowhere.

"That was impressive," a voice said behind her, unmistakable.

The woman turned and set the flag in the crook of her arm. "It's a pleasure captain," she greeted.

The captain smiled, as did B'lanna and Tom Paris who stood next to her. "Where did you learn that?" Tom questioned.

"Well before I was in Starfleet I went to a regular high school and joined their Color Guard."

"Well," Janeway laughed, "I'd like to see more but I was just passing by. Care to join me?"

The blonde nodded, she wouldn't mind. The Alpha shift didn't start for another six hours. Tom and B'lanna had left them a short while ago and joined the rest of the crew enjoying her holodeck program. It was a recreation of the twenty-first century England. This place offered a fun place to be and Tom was fascinated with old things in places he'd never been.

"So, this is the famous England program I've been hearing about," the Captain said, striking a conversation. "Though I must ask, how did you get it so detailed?"

The woman smiled, if only she could tell. "Temporal prime directive," she explained.

The higher ranking officer only nodded in understanding, she'd been transported through time too. Nasty headache afterwards, she thought.

"I'll be honest captain," the lieutenant grinned, "this week has been the most uneventful it ever has been since two months ago."

Janeway nodded, "I think almost half the crew is here." A moment of silence passed between them as they passed a park with small children playing with others. "Mariah," she said, drawing the blondes attention, "You've been a little distant lately. Everything all right? Some are worried about you."

"Nah, I'm good," Mariah answered. It was true, she was. Although she hadn't been getting much sleep for an unknown reason. "Just haven't been getting much sleep," she voiced her thoughts.

"Well," Janeway stopped, "do try to. I need you functioning at full capacity."

"Yes ma'am."

The two started walking again passing two small children bickering about who got the last candy. Mariah then grinned, "Maybe I'll just have to pick up your coffee habit," she joked. Even the captain laughed. It was such a rare occurrence that it gained the attention of Commander Chakotay, who happened to be passing by.

"What'd I miss?" He asked, looking between the two smiling girls.

"I made a joke about her coffee habits," Mariah nodded at the captain.

Even the commander grinned a little. He was about to go on his way but stopped as Captain Janeway asked where they could find Tom and Harry. All they got was that they may be at the bar playing pool. Three blocks and a small bus ride later they entered the establishment.

It wasn't as clean as it could be, but it wasn't dirty either. All around there were tables and mostly men at them. Waitresses walked around taking orders and two TV's, one at each end of the bar, played football. Soccer, it was called to the Americans. There weren't too many people around, but about one quarter of the almost twenty people were Starfleet. The bar seemed just right.

And in the center of the place, slightly to the right was a pool table. With, of course, Harry Kim and Tom Paris hustling each other at pool. Some of the crew and Britain's were betting on who would win. Mariah and the Captain smiled and walked over to the group. It seemed as though Kim was winning till Tom made the last shot. He won the game.

"It's all in the wrist," Tome grinned.

Mariah couldn't help but give a small snort. "Tom, pool has nothing to do with the wrist," she smiled. "The table is just slightly tilted to the left."

Ensign Kim looked at his friend who had just won his week of replicator rations, "And you didn't bother to tell me? Now I have to deal with Neelix's cooking." He grimaced.

"Aw it's not that bad," Mariah commented.

"Easy for you to say," Tom said. "Your species can deal with anything."

The former color guard member nodded, point taken. Janeway chuckled, "Well, this has been interesting, but I'm afraid I have to go."

"But you just got here," Mariah frowned.

"Yes and I have a lot of work to catch up on. See you later."

The two lieutenants and ensign watch their captain go before Mariah turned to Harry Kim. "How about I try to win back your rations?" she grinned.

"Oh by all means," Tom scoffed before Harry could reply. "But don't think I'll take it easy on you because you're a girl."

"Oh no we wouldn't want that."

Harry racked the billiard and handed Mariah his stick. The girl nodded at him in thanks, leaned down and aimed. She shot and three of the lined balls went into the pockets, the rest around the table. Tom's smile disappeared and Harry gained one. This was gonna be fun.
