Random Thought for Your Thursday 8-26-2021

Not edited.

I've always wondered why some authors give their characters these circumstances. The person's life is perfect, for the most part. They might be starting college or entering the work force, but they've got a supportive family and a positive outlook on everything. It all works out in the end, too, just in time for the final page.

That's not realistic, which makes it not relatable.

Stories and the characters in them should connect with the readers. Which means, the people in those books should be imperfect.

Why? Because no human is perfect, and trying to argue that we are is a toxic mindset.

Normalizing imperfection is important; it shows younger readers that having problems isn't something to be ashamed of. It also shows anyone of any age that your issues are valid, and I think it's cool that more fiction authors are approaching real world topics head-on.
