Random Thought for Your Thursday 10-17-2019

Watch out, guys. This one's a bit of a rant.

So, I recently saw a blog where a mother was talking about her son's mental illness. I don't typically search these things out, but someone had told me about it and said I needed to give it a look, especially since I'm a psychology major.

So, I was reading this blog, and I ended up floored.

The mother proceeded to talk about how her son's mental illness made him seem unmotivated, which is understandable. This is a common symptom of depression and other mental illnesses, and so I was expecting the mother to discuss her son's journey through the process.

Well, instead of sending him to therapy or striving to help him at home, this mother sent her son to a wilderness camp for troubled children in a completely different state.

I normally try to approach mental health in a nonjudgmental way, but this parent's approach to the issue really rubbed me the wrong way.

I understand not believing in therapy, that's fine. It's not for everyone.

However, when your child or someone close to you is going through mental health struggles, they likely already feel isolated. What's it going to do to their mood if you send them away to a place that is in a far-off location? The rules of this place, from what I could find, don't allow for visitors until the last week or so, and this was a ten-week program.

Now, I might be a bit more understanding of this if the place was a mental health facility, but it's not. The place advertises as a camp for children with behavioral issues, and it really made me sad to see that parents like this still put mental health and behavioral issues into the same general category.
