Questions & Answers
Happy Saturday, everybody!
I am officially on spring break now and, having put all three of my midterms behind me, I've finally come up with the time to answer your questions.
I'm pretty surprised at how many of these I got. Most of these came from my comment section, but shoutout to the handful of people who took the time to send me questions in the form of private messages as well.
Hope you guys enjoy reading all of these, and I'll see you around...

Which series are you more proud of?I'm proud of both 2050 and the Perkins School series for different reasons. 2050 was my first serious project, and those were the first two books I actually completed. Sure, I'd written short stories before, but never a novel as long as those two. The Perkins School books, School of Secrets in particular, have done the best out of any of my stories on here. I'm proud of that series because of how well it's doing, and how many new readers have taken the time to give it a look in the few months it's been here. I can't say I'm more proud of one series or the other, though.
Do people compare your books/characters to each other?
Yes, all the time. Usually people draw comparisons between my characters. Most of the time, I'll have someone compare a character from 2050 to someone from the Perkins School series, and those comparisons usually focus on the similarity between two characters' powers. I don't really mind it when readers do that, because I can usually see where they're coming from and it's interesting to see how different people view them.
Will Yumi change for the better by the end of the Perkins School series?
I can't really give a straightforward answer on this one. If I answer this one in the affirmative or in the negative, that response would potentially serve as a spoiler for the future of this series. I suppose you'll have to stick around and see for yourself.
Will you write one of the Perkins School books from Creighton's perspective?
What is it with you guys and you're questions that can't really be answered here? I can say that I've thought about this one. Yet again, though, you'll have to wait and see.
When will you start Last Stand of the Hopeless?
Oh goodness. I believe I said something along the lines of mid to late 2018 on my profile, and I'd guess that's probably a fair estimation. It's probably going to be closer to late 2018 than anything else, though.
What got you interested in psychology and neuroscience?
I've been interested in memory for a while now. I think it's interesting how we remember some things more than others, and why we do that. It also fascinates me to see how some drugs, like many of the ones we use to treat forms of cancer, can affect people's memory. I used to think that was all a part of psychology, but at some point in high school I found out that neuroscience was a thing.
Did you expect your books to do this well on here?
Lord no! When I posted 2050: The Beginning of the End, I really had no expectations. Sure, I used to post fanfics here that picked up some readers here and there, but I'd taken them down one by one. With The Beginning of the End, I was expecting about one thousand reads at the absolute max, because that's the most anything I'd ever posted had gotten. I never expected it to hit 8K reads, and I sure as heck never thought School of Secrets would be doing so well so soon.
Least favorite class this semester?
My lab class for experimental psych. Experimental psych itself is really an interesting class, but the lab always seems to drag by. We usually cover information in an hour to an hour and a half, though some days it really should take us less time. Somehow that lab always manages to seem incredibly boring.
Do you base characters off people you know?
No, not usually. People are always saying to write what you know, which I suppose could be generalized to characters as well as settings and storylines. I have never been good at the whole 'write what you know' thing, so I don't really base characters off people from my everyday life. Occasionally, I'll have a less important character who vaguely resembles a figure from my everyday life, but I never do it with main characters or important side characters.
Favorite writing spot?
I don't really have one. I can write pretty much anywhere, as long as I have my iPad on me.
What about the scene in chapter 15 of School of Secrets and that chapter of 2050: A Time of Courage? Did Creighton and Shemik have similar mindsets?
I'm honestly surprised that this is the first time I've been asked this. Their circumstances were sort of similar, though not entirely. I'm not sure you could say that the two of them had entirely similar mindsets, though to some extent that's true. Based on the worlds they live in, and the things they've gone through, I would argue that Shemik's mindset was quite a bit worse than Creighton's. Still, I think this one's a matter of perception.
What is the most unusual class you've taken in college?
I literally had a class about my college. It was really weird, and really boring. It was a one credit hour class, and it only lasted for about half of last semester. We talked about different resources on campus, the honor code, and a lot of stuff that we easily could have looked up on our own. Someone told me to take that class, and the only reason I did was because I wanted an easy course to balance out my workload. The second most unusual class would probably be astronomy, though I'll admit I liked that class a lot more than the one about my college.
Which characters from your books are your favorite?
Oh ... this question. I'll admit, I have my favorites. I don't typically say who they are, though, because I don't want to risk my opinion influencing the opinions of readers. Still, if someone can make an accurate guess, I'm willing to award ten points to Gryffindor ... or whichever house you're in ... to anyone who's correct.
Will you ever try to get published?
I've thought about it. I'm not going to get published if it means handing over the rights to any of my books, or if a deal would involve me being mandated to take my stories off this site.
In School of Secrets why did you choose Amber to be the victim of Marco and Yumi's plan? Why Amber and not Creighton?
Two words, character development. Based on the path this series is taking, at this point it made more sense for all of that to happen to Amber. I never really considered having that happen to Creighton instead, because in the long run Amber was the more appropriate choice. I had that plotline figured out before a majority of the other events, and I thought it would be interesting to follow Amber more closely through the second book. This sequence of events ended up happening to Amber because, in simple terms, it's the path that would lead her to evolve the most.
If you could read only one book for the rest of your life, it would be...?
Hands down, To Kill a Mockingbird! I love that book so much! I read it my sophomore year of high school, and I couldn't put it down. It was such an awesome read, mainly because it really didn't sugarcoat things. It was interesting for me to see how Harper Lee painted such an intricate picture of the world around her characters, and how she displayed things from the viewpoint of such a young main character.
Most controversial characters?
Dimitri from 2050, and Yumi from the Perkins School series. Those are the two characters I'm most frequently messaged about, as people are usually conflicted on how to feel towards those two. I also find that there are a few characters whom people either love or hate, and there's seemingly no in-between. People tend to do this with Shemik in 2050 and Creighton in the Perkins School series. The most common complaint I get on these two is that they're too selfish for their own good, though I also have other readers who will refute that argument right away.
What's college like?
There's not really one word to describe it. It's interesting, a lot less dull and tedious than high school. It has a tendency to get stressful sometimes, though, when everything seems to be happening in the same week. I had three exams last week, though some people only end up with one or two midterms. Some classes are pretty okay to study for, while others require a lot more time. My statistics class is pretty chill, and I can count on it being the one that requires the least time to study for during exam weeks. My math class and experimental psychology are both more time-consuming to study for. Overall, I like college a lot more than I could ever have liked high school, though.
Inspiration behind the Perkins School?
There's not really any one thing that inspired the school or the series. I mainly just had the idea, and different aspects of the school and the storyline came into focus at times during the outlining process.
One book you want to read this year?
Hmm, I haven't really thought about this. There's not one specific book that sticks out, though I have a couple of different series that I'd like to have a look at. I haven't read The Fault in Our Stars, though, so I might make it a goal to read that book.
