Fanfiction

I'm at that point in my year where I'm trying to write a lot of things for this book, so when I'm in class you'll at least get something from me.

Also, a lot of these were based on questions I got last year, so I'm trying to remember what I was going to say well enough for it to make sense.

~*~

I've been asked a lot over the years whether I'll post fanfiction on here.

While most people on here know exactly what that is, for anyone who's new, fanfiction is basically writing a story that takes place in another author's universe. This might mean that it has that author's characters playing a large role, or it might be a role playing book or different, individualized fanfiction.

I actually did write fanfiction on here a long time ago. I started my account in December of my tenth grade year. Around New Year's of that school year, I started writing a Hunger Games fanfiction on here. I was posting and typing from my phone, and I know that the quality of that book was a huge leap behind where any of my stuff is today.

Back in early 2015, though, that wasn't always a huge deal. It was right around the time that everyone was getting into the Hunger Games movies and it seemed like, if you had a fanfiction related to that universe, you could make it big on here.

For a couple months of sophomore year, I stuck with that fanfiction. People could submit their own characters, and this premise had attracted a decent audience. I picked up a couple thousand reads before I eventually took the story down.

So, you might be wondering why, exactly, I gave up on that fanfiction. The simple truth: I lost interest. My Hunger Games phase was exactly what it sounds like, a phase. Once I lost interest in obsessing over the universe, my updates for my own piece dropped off.

When I realized how low-quality that book actually was, I removed it from Wattpad. I don't even have a full copy of it anywhere, and it never was completely finished.

Then, I came up with the ideas behind 2050.

By this point, I had an iPad, so I was making an active effort to proofread and check for quality. That seemed to be clear to readers, because that original universe and the stories associated with it brought in a pretty decent audience. From 2050, I eventually progressed to my Perkins School series. If you know anything about my profile, you know that this series, in terms of total engagements up to this point, is my most popular.

I'm known for 2050 and the Perkins School books. I have over a thousand followers, most of whom never knew me before my original stories began popping up.

For anyone who is recognized primarily for their individual works, writing fanfiction on your account can actually be a problem. If you're not concerned about having a divided audience, then that's not something you would need to think about. If you are concerned that fanfiction would alienate a part of your audience, then the impacts are worth considering.

For another thing, at this point in my life, there are very few universes that I care that much about. I know a lot about the Hunger Games universe, because fifteen-year-old me was obsessed and I tend to remember facts once I've absorbed the information. I know a lot about the Harry Potter universe, too. I recently also rediscovered Warriors after about ten years of being out of the game. While I actually still like that series, I don't feel passionately enough about any of these to write stories based off the series.

So, I can't see myself posting fanfiction here in the future. While that might change, I really don't see it happening at all. I'm afraid that those days are long over.
