You say there's so much you don't know
You need to go and find yourself
Y/n felt her heart speed up as she spoke her thoughts to her boyfriend Dan. She'd been thinking about this topic for a while, and even though she loved Dan more than anyone, she decided to end their relationship in order to figure out some things. Her mind has been a messed up, hectic, unorganized place lately and needed to be alone to fix that problem and discover what had been hidden in the mess.
You say you'd rather be alone
'Cause you think you won't
Find it tied to someone else
Dan's heart broke even more the longer Y/n spoke. As he realized what the girl was saying he felt multiple emotions and questions building up. He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream, he wanted to bombard her with questions, but instead he sat in his seat of the café quietly, dreading the moment bound to come when the first tear dropped. Dan didn't want Y/n to leave, he didn't want to lose one of the most important people to him, but that wasn't his decision.
Ooo, who said it's true
That the growing only
Happens on your own?
Y/n didn't want to do this as much as he didn't want this to happen, but she knew it was for the best. Thoughts of taking back what she said filled her mind, but she pushed them to the side, knowing she shouldn't. The two sat there in the middle of the café, others around them oblivious to the sorrowful event happening in these two individual's life that would stick with them for years.
The silence was broken between the two by Dan's shaking voice, very obviously trying his hardest not to let the river behind his eyes break the dam he was building to keep them back. "Why do you have to leave? You can do all of this with me- we can do this together." The breaking man stuttered out in a hurry, wanting to get back to biting his lip so hard it bleeds to keep himself from crying.
They don't know me and you
The girl's heart ached at the sight of Dan. She wanted to comfort him in any way she could, but she knew it would only make it worse. She hated the unsteady sound of his voice, the tears threatening to fall, the absence of the bright smile she loved to see. Dan was convinced they could go through this together. They've already been through so much together, how is this any different? The two of them were tough and could do anything together, why couldn't they face this together as well?
I don't think you have to leave
If to change is what you need
You can change right next to me
When Dan realized Y/n wasn't going to reply, he spoke up again. "If you're looking to change, you can do that with me. You don't have to leave to do that." Dan shakily stated. At this point he was begging Y/n to change her mind, to stay with him, but both of them knew it wasn't going to work.
When you're high, I'll take the lows
You can ebb and I can flow
And we'll take it slow
And grow as we go
Grow as we go
Y/n ran a hand through her (hair color) hair, feeling as if she were going to cry as well. "Being in a relationship would be difficult in this situation. I'm sorry, Dan."
Dan shook his head, staring at his hands on the small table in front of him, feeling his dam beginning to break. He wanted to leave, burry himself in his blankets in the comfort of his room where he could let his emotions free, soaking his sheets as much as his heart desired.
You won't be the only one
I am unfinished, I've got
So much left to learn
"We could do this together, Y/n, I've still got to grow just as much as you do, w-we can go through all of this together. I-" Dan stopped, noticing multiple tears were streaming down his face quickly. Instead of looking in the eyes of the girl he loved, he stared at out the windows behind her, trying to distract himself with the people passing by.
Y/n's heart ached terribly, staring at the sight in front of her, hearing the broken voice begging her not to leave. She hated she was the cause of this. Who used to be responsible for all the laughs and bright, white smiles is now the one ripping his heart out.
I don't know how this river runs
But I'd like the company
Through every twist and turn
Thinking he was fine now, Dan continued what he was saying before. "I don't know how this life is going to go or what changes I may go through, but I'd prefer you be there with me rather than being alone in this."
A warm, salty drop of water fell from Y/n's eye as she stared at the man she's spent the past three years with. Shaking her head, she mumbled out an apology. It seemed to be the only thing she can think of to say.
Ooo, who said it's true
That the growing only
Happens on your own?
They don't know me and you
The two had broken up, as much as the they hated to say. As soon as Dan arrived at his shared flat, Phil had noticed something was wrong. Immediately after the front door had clicked shut, Dan slid to the floor, burying his face in his hands and letting all of his emotions free. Phil, being Dan's best friend, spent the rest of the day by Dan's side, listening as he ranted, hugged him as he cried, and helped when he asked. He hated seeing Dan in such a state and tried anything he could to bring a smile to his face.
In a dark room, curled up in multiple heavy blankets, was a girl who had just let the man she loved go, streaks of salty water staining her face as she sobbed into her pillow. She hated what she did, but she knew it would be for the better. Her phone was turned off due to the obnoxious, never ending ringing it created when her friend called her, worried for her emotional state. Y/n didn't want the help, she wanted nothing more than to be alone with her thoughts that never ended nicely.
You don't ever have to leave
If to change is what you need
You can change right next to me
She wanted to listen to Dan, she wanted to stay and grow with him, but she knew it wouldn't work if she had. Too much would be different, it wouldn't work out. She knew they were better off as separate at a time like this, but she didn't want that and neither did Dan.
When you're high, I'll take the lows
You can ebb and I can flow
And we'll take it slow
Phil had been filled in on the events of Dan's day. It was hard to understand his best friend's words though his messy cries, but he did it and he knew what happened. By doing this, Y/n didn't only lose Dan, but Phil as well. Phil was saddened by this fact, but it was true. Her frequent visits were no longer a thing, her bright smile was never going to be inside this flat, and their friendship was just a memory. Not only Dan was suffering in this time, but Phil too.
And grow as we go
Grow as we go
The words that came out of Dan's mouth continued to repeat themselves in Y/n's head. The words only made her sobs louder and the grip on her blankets tighter. His pleas for her to stay, his solutions to her problems. She couldn't stop thinking of those words and thinking to herself if it actually would've worked if she had listened to him.
I don't know who we'll become
I can't promise it's not written in the stars
But I believe that when it's done
We're gonna see that it was better
That we grew up together
The three hurting souls felt off without each other in their daily lives. The absence of one another left them wondering what they ever did before they had met. No one liked how empty their day felt or how it hurt when they reminisced their memories together. The laughs they shared, the jokes that left them in tears, the games they played when only all three of them were present. All of it was just a memory.
Tell me you don't wanna leave
'Cause if change is what you need
You can change right next to me
Days had passed and the only thing that changed was their tear stained cheeks. They were done with their crying and they were back on their feet, but only to walk into the kitchen for their comfort foods. The two stayed in the same spot for days on end, engulfed in warm blankets.
When you're high, I'll take the lows
You can ebb and I can flow
Weeks had passed since they had seen each other. They were back to their regular day(minus each other). The two went out, met up with friends, everything was almost back to normal. Almost. Though they had the strength to go out and pull a smile on their face, they still felt upset about the event that took place weeks prior and it stuck with them everywhere they went.
We'll take it slow
And grow as we go
Months had passed. Their new schedules without each other had been formed, new people have walked into their lives, and they no longer thought about the time they felt they'd never be happy again. They forgot about the time they spent making many memories and instead created new ones with other people. The smiles they believed would never return were back, a sign they forgot about the depressing time they went through.
Grow as we go
A year had passed. The two changed, and they changed without one another- physically, mentally, and emotionally. They grew and they changed, they lived on and discovered new parts of themselves. Thoughts of one another didn't exist, as if the two completely forgot about the times they shared. They've moved on, they've forgotten about the many memories together, and they shared the same smile they used to have together, but now with someone else.
Grow as we go
Forgetting about all the times together, refusing to reminisce. They say they've moved on, they say they've forgotten, and they'd say they didn't think about each other. They'd say it was the truth, but the only people to know what the real truth is are Dan Howell and Y/n L/n.
Grow as we go
The next time the pair went out, they'd see each other with someone else. Their hearts sped up, their breathing became uneven, and their focus was anywhere but their replacement of each other. Their heart screamed at them to go to each other, to try everything again, to go back to how things used to be. Instead, they ignored what they so very much wanted and went home with the person they claimed to hold their heart.
They both knew what they say wasn't the truth.
Constructive criticism is needed and very much appreciated!
