"Taia. I told you once and I'll tell you again. We aren't together. We never were."
Glancing at him, he didn't seem all that upset. His voice was cool and calm, with no way to tell his emotions except through his words. And his words to me weren't unexpected. I had pushed and pushed to no avail and finally gotten one answer to that burning question I had held for years.
What were we?
We had been on and off for years, someone deciding to end it before it "became too deep" or they "got too attached" or something. But somebody always wandered back somehow. It was impossible for us to stay apart. We were both attached to something in the other it seemed, even if we didn't know what it was and somebody kept denying the bond's existence.
Even if we had been apart for several days now, I still kept wondering exactly what we were and who would crawl back first.
It was practically a contest at this point. Who could make it the longest without the other's company. We never acknowledged it, it wasn't like either of us to play such games. Not Ryder, not me.
