Um... I don't think Red died in crafting dead...
He got shot in the forehead.
According to Matpat, the forehead is where the skull is the strongest.
A basic pistol wouldn't have been able to hit Red's brain, thus there would be no brain damage.
Sure, he could still die from bloodloss but...
He could easily be healed by a doctor of great intelligence.
*Cough cough* Ross *cough cough*
So, I like to think Ross still thought Red useful and revived him.
That's just my headcanon though.

Just think of all the random shit they do while alone.
