Rant: Masamune-kun no Revenge
I'll keep this brief as no one wants to hear my opinions in general. Spoiler Alert: Readers Beware!
I really like the manga and anime adaptation of Masamune-kun no Revenge. The animation is wonderful and the soundtracks are okay. The plot is relatively interesting as the title suggests "revenge". The main character has a fairly unique personality that ISN'T over used too often in anime. I wish the same could be said of the main heroine/antagonist. All in all, there's plenty to love about this anime.
So what am I here to rant about?
I'm here to rant about wasted potential in characters and how they act.
If you think I'm about to discuss the flaws of each character, I'm sorry. That's not the case. In fact, I like the flaws of each character that marks them as "an individual". However, my personal issue is with how the "presentation" of Masamune-kun. First few episodes were absolutely incredible. Though some of my enjoyment came from reading the manga prior, I was genuinely pleased by the introduction of the conflict and (more importantly) the characters. The first head scratcher was the with Tae Futaba- the class president girl- who asked Masamune out on a date.
No, I'm not going to rant about how Masamune acts poorly each damn time a girl gets in his face. I'm more intrigued by the presentation of the scene. Futaba was introduced in a meaningful fashion, and she asks Masamune out. The fella refuses her for the sake of his "revenge", and she gets depressed. That's okay. But, the anime (and the manga slightly) sort of tossed her aside afterwards. Futaba became a flat character who was there to spice things up a bit. Hopefully, she'll be incorporated into the plot slightly more.
Next person: Neko Fujinomiya. Her purpose seemed to be that of an obstacle as a clingy girl Masamune has to deal with every now and then. This and that happens, and Masamune rejects her confession. This is great and all, but Neko also gets pushed aside to make room for the appearance of other characters. She isn't as far off the side as Futaba, but her role has also significantly diminished so far.
In the end, it's just another rant. Maybe these characters will be incorporated later on, and I'm just being too impatient. On the flip side, maybe I just don't like how "significant characters" are presented just for show. Like "Hey! I'm a random girl who'll spend one to three episodes only to get rejected and tossed aside!".
This doesn't only apply to Masamune-kun no Revenge. It applies to essentially 75% of all "Harem" anime that toss out characters through a window. But, Masamune-kun no Revenge is still a good show to watch. The plot has been built up very well, and I'd like to continue watching to see how everything plays out (despite being somewhat ahead after reading the manga). The characters, though flawed, are likable to an extent, but my main concern is this: Will we see them play a role in the plot later? Enough of that for now. Let's all enjoy this anime to the fullest.
Definitely one of my favorites for this season.
