Kea's Poem Explained
"Across the roads I will travel.
Throughout life here and there.
And though many a stranger I've met,
Reveal myself I will not dare."
The first one is simple. Basically saying how no matter where he goes or who he meets he bottles everything up inside and doesn't open up to anyone.
"Past fields and forest glades I wander.
Through and over hardened stone.
Over mountains and across the water.
It's all I've ever known."
Describes how lonely he is. That he has been alone for so long but doesn't know how to change.
"A soft life is not for me,
I've seen the things it does."
Refers to when "the incident" happened
"Indifference is my gift to the world."
He puts forth a tough and uncaring exterior to keep his sadness from showing. He didn't want to put his burden on anyone else's shoulders.
My answer's always "just because.""
He never shows or tells why he does the things that he does. He just gives them the cold shoulder when it's brought up.
"Reflections are my downfall."
Though it references it, does not mean actual reflections. Rather when he thinks and reflects on the past.
"Look at me, my garnet eyes.
What is color? What is hue?
If nothing but a compromise."
He believes that his no longer being able to see color has helped him to know when to see the truth in others. And that if it had not happened he'd had lived in ignorance of what people are truly capable of.
"They say it's wondrous. They say it's grand."
Again referring to seeing color.
"Tch, not from my point of view.
It's all a lie. A scheme.
But of course, that's nothing new..."
Goes from the aforementioned view of being able to see color vs not, to recalling what his friend did to him. And saying that, that was all one big lie and a scheme.
"If you could live the life I have,
Time and time again,
You still wouldn't know
Of all the places that I've been."
Saying that even if you had been through what he had you trill wouldn't know of his pain. And the "places that I've been" does not refer to actual places but rather the places of the mind.
"Life's a cheat, I know that much."
Speaking of his lost friendship and unspoken banishment.
"It's a lonely road, the one I walk,
But I wouldn't change a single thing.
Though many a time I stand and balk."
Even though he feels very lonely and betrayed he wouldn't change what had happened as it "gave him new light of the world and people in it". As if it hadn't happened then he would never have known of the dark greed and anger people could posses.
"Freedom is not what I desire.
Nor friends, kindness, or family."
He doesn't want anyone else to be able to get that close to him again.
"Soaring above clouds is where my heart is home."
He takes pleasure in knowing that, as a crow
And bringer of warning, he can help stop bad things from happening to others so that they don't have to know his pain.
"I only wish someone could see..."
He still longs for a friend. Someone he can connect to.
"To me a settled home is nothing."
He's lived so long without a proper home that he can't just settle down somewhere.
Also again referring to how he can't settle in a friendship once more.
"My place is both up high and down below."
Refers to when he lived deep in caves beneath the mountains.
"My mind could never have imagined this,"
He never could have foreseen or imagined the things that would happen to him.
"I learned it all so long ago...."
Meaning the whole lesson he got from "the incident"
"Hope is for the weak, it brings sorrow."
He has long since given up hope of trusting anyone again.
"Sorrow mimics nothing but the rain."
Refers to how people associate rain with sadness (well most people).
(Side note: he never cried over what happened)
"I wonder, I'd there hope left in me?
All I can feel is the pain...."
He doesn't know what to hope for anymore.
"But cry for me and I'll hunt you down.
To put you in your place."
He hates for others to pity him.
"As I said it happened long ago,
And that's a fact I'll have to face......"
he knows that one day he'll have to come to terms with what happened. Though when or how he does not know.
(Is this a bad time to mention that he wrote the poem himself?.....)
