Frederick Makalt
(Miniature made by my DM)
To some in this world, they define themselves by elements. Saying one has a fiery passion, or the speed of lightning. To Frederick, he is ice. Stable, unwavering, and free of obstruction. But his story begins long ago, with a fateful fall.
Naya Vivian Hasia was a young peasant girl, of fair complexion and brunette hair. She loved to play outside in the sun in the spring and summer, and stay inside in the winter, listening to stories by a fire. However, that all changed on a trip to Iecir, a northern country, beset by ice and snow year-round.
While exploring a remote part of a forest, she fell into a deep hole, obscured by snow. When she came to, she found herself in a cave, with one source of dim light in the corner. Scrambling over, she found a light blue snowflake, seemingly discarded for years upon years, yet retaining its shape. She had found The First Frost: The first snowflake ever created.
The First Frost was created long ago, when the Knights of Frostfell were defending their city. They repelled the attackers twice, but knew they couldn't fend off a 3rd strike. Desperately, they prayed to their god, Aengrist, to aid them. Aengrist responded by causing a new phenomenon: Snow. The intruders couldn't fight in the raging blizzard, and the Frostfell knights won the day. They retrieved the greatest and most powerful snowflake: The First Frost, and beheld it as a powerful relic. Over the millennia, the First Frost was lost, until Naya found it again.
Naya beheld The First Frost in a sense of wonder: one the cold normally never gave her. However, as she did, she could feel the relic's power creep up her, and she passed out.
When she came to, The First Frost was gone. And with it, the relic took the old Naya. Now, the girl had hair as white as snow, and eyes red like blood. Her olive skin had paled dramatically while she laid asleep, and her body temperature dropped like a bird nailed by a fireball. Naya was a new person: she could stay outdoors in winter the entire day and night, and couldn't bear getting anywhere close to fire. She also had cryokinetic powers, something entirely alien to her family and those around her.
Naya eventually left her old family home to return to Iecir, settling down amongst the ice and snow. She met a man named Jack, and they were very happy together.
Jack Makalt grew up amongst the mountains of Iecir, learning how to hunt in the cold environments. When his parents died, he took over the family home, living a peaceful life. One day, as he was hunting in the Eigos Mountains, he heard a cry for help. He quickly ran to find Naya trying to escape a bear. Jack quickly diverted the creature's attention with an arrow. Through a combination of physical arrow and arcane magic, the two of them scared off the creature, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Years later, Naya gave birth to their firstborn, Frederick. They knew immediately from his red eyes and cold temperature that Naya had given the child her powers. She resolved to teach him how to use and control them when he was of age, but it would never happen.
When Frederick was 5, Naya died, taken by Pneumonia. This broke Jack emotionally, and was only compounded by Frederick. Now, the child who he and his wife marveled at together served as a reminder of the woman he couldn't save. He became abusive, punishing Frederick for the slightest sign of his powers.
Frederick escaped when he was 12, his back riddled with scars from knife wounds, and 2 patches of charred skin from burns he suffered. And so he wandered, his journey only beginning.
Frederick, having observed some hunting from his father, lived on his own for 6 months in the Iecir tundra. His inherited arcane powers assisted with survival, preventing him from freezing to death, but it was yet still an ordeal for the sheltered 12 year old. Then, after half a year of survival, Frederick was saved: found by a scholar of the Northern Library of Magic; a large archive of knowledge, with facilities attached to accommodate those who stay. The Library took him in, giving Frederick a home, a duty, and belonging.
During his 7 year tenure at the library, he found a wealth of books and stories. He compiled a reading list, consisting of titles such as:
• One Flew Over the Kenku's Nest
• To Kill a Manticore
• The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peasants
• Dante's Infernal
• The Girl With The Dragonborn Tattoo
• Sprite Pilgrim vs. The Prime Material Plane
• Diary of a Wimpy Kobold
• A Handmaid's Tale: A collection of short stories by notable Tieflings
And the next story on the list
• Wargmen (putting the "graphic" in "graphic novel)
But, reading books, searching for an answer to where his powers came from, he came across a restricted part of the library. He was told by the others that he was never going to get in. Someone born in the medical ward could spend their entire life in the library as a scholar, and not be allowed in by the time they were 65. The idea of not being allowed access to this knowledge festered in Frederick, and along with the previous scars of arbitrary rules visible on his back, gave him a distaste for rules and regulations in general.
Then, when he was 19, the Library got embroiled in a racketeering scandal, creating tension between the Library and the surrounding village. During this tension, the employees weren't being paid. While some stayed behind, like the nurses, most deserted, including all the guards restricting access to the hidden archives. Frederick was one of the last to get there, with scholars stealing books from the shelves. The one he could find was a list of ruined and off-limits areas, including the corrupted town of Gattla (a place the DM mentioned in the briefing).
Frederick stayed at the Library until the headmaster himself told him to leave, but not before he gave Frederick a journal to inscribe what he sees fit into. Frederick, wearing the blue and gold cloak given to him by an elven nurse, with his supplies and journal in hand, fled the Library, away from the now furious villagers.
Frederick fled the continent, catching a ship to the small island of Corr, beginning a trek to the small town of Celerik. On the last day of the journey, he saved a Pseudodragon from a Giant Weasel, the small creature choosing to accompany Frederick. The pair stopped at the gates of Celerik, closed to all who wish to enter. And that's where Frederick stands now.
Until Wednesday.
