Why I Don't Like Captain Marvel
Ever since I said I didn't like Captain Marvel, especially in my review of Endgame, I've had alot of people ask me why I don't like her. So I've decided to write this little rant, I guess you call it, to tell you, so that I don't have to repeat myself over and over. Also I'm sorry if this rant sounds like I'm angry, which I am, but maybe you guys will get an idea why.
First things first, let's get this out of the way, I am a woman so you don't have to call me sexist. It seems lately if you don't like a female character, even when it's for a logical reason, you are labeled sexist. It's like the whole thing with the Ghostbusters 2016 all over again (PS that movie was total garbage and it's a disgrace to share the Ghostbusters name).
Now here is the thing, the Captain Marvel movie was okay, I think it's one of the weakest Marvel movies probably worse than Thor The Dark World, but it's a movie you can only watch once. I don't like the Carol Danvers character at all. She was very bland and very boring didn't have any kind of personalities. She also doesn't have a character arc, she doesn't change through the events of the movie. She is the same person from beginning to end, the only thing changed was that she was part of the Kree but then towards the end she sides with the Skrulls and goes against her former friend. That is not good enough.
We are told through out the whole movie that she is a tough badass but we are never shown it. The movie didn't show me that she was the most powerful, all I've seen is she can fly, shoot beams out of her hands and is really strong. Do you know who else can do all that?
MOST OF THE OTHER HEROES IN THE MARVEL MOVIES HAVE SIMILAR POWERS!!!
She's also not even the most powerful character in the comics!! There's actually a story where the Avengers go against Thanos and she stands up and goes toe-to-toe with Thanos and you guys wanna know what happens? Thanos bitch slaps her and she was knocked out cold and then Thor came in and beat Thanos up.
Even Stan Lee...Stan THE MAN Lee....has said she's not the most strongest or most powerful. That belongs to Thor. And I 100% agree! At least he took a dying star to the chest in Infinity War, almost died but he freakin' lived!
It also doesn't help that this movie was intentionally made to be a feminist movie, not to tell a good story but to basically promote feminism and girl power. Which I don't mind a female superhero movie but if feminism and politics are gonna be the main focus of a movie, especially a superhero movie, and not to tell a good story and show good characters then it's a problem. BIG TIME!
We also don't see Carol make mistakes and struggle with conflict, internally and externally. She's just little miss perfect, never makes mistakes, doesn't have flaws, doesn't learn a lesson and doesn't change. You know what we call a character like that?
A Mary Sue!!
And yes in fan fiction that's fine, but when you do a movie and want to make people identify with the main character, you don't make them perfect!! Make the characters struggle, make mistakes and learn from them so that they can overcome them and become a better person and prove themselves to the people that keep putting them down!
We are human! We make mistakes! We have flaws! We are not perfect!
I also don't like that this movie and Brie Larson (Trust me, we'll be getting to her really soon), have been promoting themselves as this first female lead movie. Granted it is the first female lead movie in Marvel, when Black Widow deserves it more than Captain Marvel, but the movie is acting like she's the first female lead movie of all time. Did they forget:
Wonder Woman
The Alien Franchise
Terminator
Kill Bill
Resident Evil
Underworld
The Hunger Games
Alita Battle Angel (which I've heard is good but I haven't seen it yet)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I know it's not a movie but it's a show with a strong female lead).
Okay...so onto my biggest problem with Captain Marvel and that is.....Brie Larson. God, the more interviews I watch with her the more I hate her. She comes off as snoty, arrogant, condescending and really bitchy. She kinda reminds me of Regina George from Mean Girls. She holds herself like she's better than everyone and she's all that.
I've heard that she has social anxiety and when she does an interview, she's acting which would explain when interviewers ask her questions she answers them like she is actually Captain Marvel, not Brie Larson.
Also the interview she had with Chris Hemsworth and Don Cheadle, oh my God, the way she snapped at Chris when he was making a JOKE about doing stunts and she goes I do all of my own stunts (which is a lie cuz there are set photos of her having a stunt double who she is supposedly best friends with, so she basically doesn't give her stunt double any credit). And Chris is like Oh, Tom Cruise over here? (Also if you don't know Tom Cruise is known for doing his own stunts). And she's like No I'm gonna be the first me, not the next Tom Cruise. Thank you very much. And she says it in the most bitchy and arrogant way!
And don't say she was joking as well. No! If you look at her face and the way she says that, you know she is not kidding. She was genuinely mad.
Also, watch the video of her on Wired called Brie Larson answers Google search questions, or something along those lines, and every question that popped up on the Google Search bar about her, like where is she from, does she workout, who is she, did she go to college etc, etc, etc. And she doesn't really answer them instead she's like why do you want to know? Is that a personal attack? Shit like that!
And I've seen a couple of other videos like that, Elizabeth Olsen who plays Scarlet Witch and another one with Daniel Radcliffe and they answered them very friendly and joked around. Brie seems the kind of person that doesn't have a sense of humor, so she takes things very personal.
There are other things but the more I see of her the more I dislike her and she almost made me not go see Captain Marvel but I went ahead and saw it. I'm not really mad that I saw it, I was just disappointed in it cuz it could have been really good. But no, it was just...average. Although I will say her destroying Thanos's ship in Endgame was pretty cool but that's it.
Thanks for reading this, I'm sorry if this came off as an angry rant but I had to get this out of my system and have people understand why I don't like the movie and the character. If you anyone enjoyed the movie then that's fine, enjoy it, but don't argue with me and try to convince me otherwise.
Anyway comment below and let me know what your thoughts on Captain Marvel was. Did you like it? Or were you like me and didn't think it was all that? Let me know and please let's have a civil conversation.
