My Thoughts on Abby Anderson
Yes, yes, I know I'm back to talking about this game. But fuck, this game won't leave my head and I just keep getting mixed emotions and thoughts on things that happened in this game. I also keep going back and forth on whether I like the game or not. I'm so conflicted.
Maybe this just shows how much I loved the first game and was just baffled at the choices that were made in the sequel I can't stop thinking about it. Or maybe, like I have said, I see the potential of this game and it is just frustrating cause I see the good in this game but it is bogged down by some of the bad and the structure and pacing of the game.
Abby has become the most hated and most controversial character in, not just games, all of media. And yes, I know she has fans that love her but like among most fans of TLOU franchise, she is hated.
And people that defend Abby say to the people that hate her "well, you just don't like her cause she killed Joel" and that's one of the reason but there are so many other things about her that people hate.
But I now want to talk about everyone's favorite character (sarcasm), Abby Anderson.
And I'm gonna give you why I don't like Abby.
Before I really go into it, I wanna say this: I have no hate towards Laura Bailey, the actress that played Abby. Even though I didn't like her character, I thought she did a great job with what she had to work with.
She was only doing what Neil Druckmann directed her to do and what the script told her to do.
I thought her acting was just as good as Troy's and Ashley's. I'm saying this cause there was the controversy of where some fans were sending her death threats because of Abby killing Joel. And that is just stupid; people need to realize that this is a game, not real life.
I also want to say about her physical look. I'm not a fitness expert but, correct me if I'm wrong, but to keep those kinds of muscle, besides working out in a gym; shouldn't she be eating like alot of calories and/or protein?
So how is she able to get that kind've food when in their world, food is scarce?
I mean, if anyone knows about fitness and how the female body works in fitness, please let me know if I'm wrong.
So with that said, let's talk about the character.
Now yes, her killing Joel is one of the reasons I hate her but that would've been fine if Naughty Dog set her up as the main antagonist of the game like they were doing in the first half of the game.
I mean, who doesn't love/hate a good villian?
But Naughty Dog tried something different. They tried to make us sympathize with her on the second half of the game.
And honestly, that's too little too late kind've scenario where that's concerned.
Once she killed Joel, she was, and is, irredeemable in my eyes.
And I get it. Joel killed her father, who was the surgeon from the ending of the first game. I get that; but that's the only reason why she killed him, not because what Joel took away from humanity.
Also, her father was willing to kill Ellie without asking her consent. I know some people will say well Marlene gave him her blessing but they still should've woken Ellie and asked her.
What's funny is that his death really reminds me of Glenn and Abraham's death in the Walking Dead. I remember everyone hated Negan after that and that everyone wanted him dead.
But now everyone likes him and think he is a cool dude. And part of that is because Negan is a very charismatic, funny, slightly charming, guy.
And eventually, Negan is remorseful for the things he's done and is actually working hard to redeem himself.
Abby does not.
Abby is an unsympathetic, insufferable hypocrite!
Like, honestly, Joel saved her life and the way she repays him is by torturing and killing him? Again, I know he killed her dad but there should've been some sort've conflict within herself once that happened!
Maybe have her talk to her friends and say she changed her minds, but they keep encouraging her to go ahead and kill Joel but she tries to fight back on it but eventually gives in.
But nope, she was dead set on killing him no matter what! And she does it while Ellie was pleading and begging for her to stop.
Plus she's also pretty fucking stupid for letting Tommy and Ellie live when she knows that they are pretty close to Joel. I mean, she knew Tommy was his brother and the way Ellie pleads for him she'd had to have known that her and Joel were close; did she seriously think that they wouldn't come after her for revenge?!
She also showed no remorse for even killing Joel, like none at all. It would've been nice to see her feeling remorseful for what she did, like maybe instead of dreaming of her dead dad she sees a dead body in that hospital. Thinking it's her dad, she runs to it and, instead of her dad, it's Joel. Then she gets startled awake by Manny.
You know, show her that she is human. But nope they don't do that.
Then they try to give her a redemption arc similar to Joel's in the first game by her befriending these two kids. Even though I liked Yara and Lev, the arc just doesn't work.
To me it felt forced and rushed when Abby started to bond with these two kids.
Joel and Ellie had almost a year traveling together for them to form the bond that they did. Abby, Lev and Yara have only known each other for a day or two and yet we're suppose to believe that they have this special strong bond, which is enough for Abby to turn her back on the WLF? A group she has been with for four years?
No, sorry but it doesn't work.
What really pissed me off with this character is when she brings Yara and Lev to the aquarium, meeting up with Owen and Mel. And Mel asks her "who are these kids?" And Abby says, and I quote, "They saved my life."
My jaw actually dropped when she said that.
Really, bitch?
They saved your...You know who else saved your life?!
JOEL!!!!!!
But what did you do to repay him? You clubbed him to death!!
Not to mention these kids are a part of a faction her group has been fighting against for years. And they seem to relish on killing them.
Seriously, the way Abby, her friends and the other WLF talk about the Seraphites, they talk about them like they are the scum of the universe and they seem excited on killing them.
So what made these two kids special?
I know there's a little dialogue where Lev asks her why is she helping them and Abby says Guilt and that she needs to lighten the load, but that line is kinda vague. What is she feeling guilt for?
Killing Joel? I don't really think so as she hasn't really shown remorse for killing him.
Her father's death? Doubt it since she went and killed Joel for that.
So...what is she feeling guilty for? They should've clarified that just a little.
Also she sleeps with Owen, who she knows has a pregnant girlfriend who is also one of her supposed best friends. Which the sex scene between them I don't think is bad (I mean has anyone played South Park the Stick of Truth? That sex scene was super uncomfortable) but what does make me mad is that the words that rile Abby and Owen up to do the ol' devil's tango, was them mentioning the torture and death of Joel.
Mel summed it up when she and Abby argued.
"You're a piece of shit, Abby."
That pretty much sums her up.
She also doesn't seem to care about her so called friends. When Manny was shot in the face in front of her, she doesn't really seem fazed by it. She was shocked for a moment but she moved on.
She was bothered when she saw Owen, Mel and Alice killed but that was also too brief.
And then when she saw that the sniper was Tommy, she doesn't warn her friends about it after she threw him in the water! Like, really? These are the people that are your friends and you're not even gonna bother to warn them?
And don't give me the excuse well, she took Tommy out so she thought that was it. No, Manny told her, moments before he got his head blown off, that there were multiple trespassers!
She was also gleeful to slicing Dina's throat, even after being told that she was pregnant. I get that Ellie killed Mel, but Ellie didn't know she was pregnant. And when she found out, she started to break down.
Abby only relents to killing Dina because Lev gave her a look. Wouldn't it have been more interesting if, upon hearing Ellie saying Dina was pregnant, she actually stops, looks down in regret and sets her knife down and Dina to the side.
I think that would've been way more interesting and it would've made Abby a bit more human. But no.
Plus, I'm sure if Lev wasn't there, Abby for damn sure would've killed Dina and Ellie right there and then.
Abby also doesn't seem remorseful for anything she's done. Pretty much through the whole game, she believes she's done the righteous thing!
Also I want to say for the message of the story, which of course is Revenge is bad. How come Revenge is okay for Abby but not Ellie? That baffles me? I know Abby loses all of her friends but like I said, she doesn't seem too broken up about it.
Ellie, on the other hand, has lost her father figure, one of her friends, her family and two of her fingers and is all alone, which was her worst fear, and she looks bothered and upset.
I know there's a theory that Ellie might have gotten Dina back as on the last moments of the game she's wearing Dina's bracelet but, until ND says anything different, she is alone.
I think the message would've worked better if Ellie killed Abby and she went back and finds herself alone. Or hell, give players the choice! It might not have been new, but at least give players the satisfaction.
And the people that say well you just don't get the story I do get the story and I do get the message.
But as one YouTuber said I get it, doesn't mean I have to like it.
Maybe in a year or two my mind will change but for now, this is how I feel about this character and if you disagree with me then fine. I'm just giving you my thoughts on the character and why I don't like her, I'm not here to change your mind.
If you do like Abby then tell me why you like her.
Just please don't yell and scream at me or call me names just because I don't like a Character you like.
But if you are like me and don't like her, then let me know if you agree with me or was there something else about her you didn't like and picked up on that I might've missed!
Just please be kind! We've already got enough hate in the world going on right now, let's be respectful!
