Movies And Shows I Watched In 2023

Seems like everyone likes my opinions on certain things so to celebrate the new year instead of dedicating chapters of each movie or show I watched I'm putting all my thoughts on them together here.

Now these aren't just movies or shows that came out in 2023 that I watched, there are also a few shows that came out a few years ago that I decided to give a chance to watch in 2023. And I also want to say I haven't seen everything that came out, these are just the ones I've seen and either enjoyed or didn't.

So let's jump in, shall we?

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

Starting off with the movie to kick off Phase 5 of the MCU is the third Ant-Man movie. And I'm gonna be honest, I didn't really under the hate this movie got. Sure it wasn't perfect but I wouldn't say it was bad. Though I will say the CGI on Modak was very cartoony looking and I will say how they defeat Kang was a bit of a letdown but other than that, I kinda enjoyed this movie. It's not one of Marvel's best but I think it's more in the okay category.

HBO's The Last Of Us

I already have a chapter in this book that goes more into detail on my thoughts on this show and I still stand by them. However, I'll say my opinions on the show has gone a bit more negative the more time I've thought about it. I still don't like the changes they made, with getting rid of spores, Bill's story, changing Pittsburgh to Kansas City and give us the Karen leader and many other.

I still don't like the casting of most of the characters. Only ones I liked was of course the actress that played Marlene, and that's because she played her in the game, and Gabriel Luna who played Tommy because he actually felt like Tommy.

And I also feel like that the show wanted to focus on side characters that don't matter than the actual two main leads, which annoys the hell outta me. But then again, as I've said before, Pedro and Bella have no chemistry and I couldn't buy their relationship unlike the game.

Also, where the hell were the infected?! They're barely in the show! I know the infected were more gameplay obstacles in the game but come on! It felt like Show Joel and Ellie had it easier than Game Joel and Ellie. And hell, if Walking Dead can balanced human enemies and zombies then HBO's The Last of Us has no excuse!

Anyway, moving on before I keep ranting on this show.

The Mandalorian Season 3

I have said this when I put my announcement of not continuing my fic but I thought this season was a major disappointment after the greatness of the first two seasons. I also didn't really like the season pretty much undoes the second season by having Grogu come back to Mando, I know this happens in Book of Boba Fett but still.

I also didn't like it focused more on Bo-Katan and they kinda chickened out on making her a bad guy since there was supposed to be fight for the Dark Saber between her and Mando. The only episode I genuinely liked was the finale but it wasn't enough for me to even go and rewatch and write a fic about it.

This might be a theory but this season feels like it wasn't what the writers and the showrunners wanted but Disney intervened and wanted them to do a certain way, especially since they fired Cara Dune's actress.

Shazam Fury Of The Gods

This is another movie that got hated on too much and I didn't think it was that bad. Now I will admit it is not good as the first movie but it was still entertaining and I did feel that they played up the silliness of Billy in his superhero form a little too much.

But it was still fun and c'mon, Shazam fighting a dragon? That is pretty damn cool! 🤣

John Wick Chapter 4

Holy shit, this movie might be my favorite of the year. I swear these movies keep getting better and better. The way the world and the lore of the assassins being expanded on was great. The action in this movie is just fantastic, it seems the action gets better with each movie.

And the main villain is just a slimy asshole and was great. Cain is also a great character and I would like to see more of him and I'm also looking forward to the spin-off movie that I think is supposed to come out this year.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

This movie is just a lot of fun and I think if you love Dungeons and Dragons I think you'll enjoy this movie. I also feel like it's a bit underrated as it kinda disappeared after going to theater and nobody really talks about it.

But maybe with the success of Baldur's Gate 3, which takes place in the Dungeon and Dragon's universe, maybe people should give this movie a chance. It's not as serious as the game is but it is silly fun.

Super Mario Bros

This movie I was worried about when I saw the trailers but I had some hope as it did look nice and looked like the Mario games. Yes, the casting choices were a bit weird but after seeing this movie, I think it worked out really well.

I actually had a lot of fun with this movie and even though I'm not a huge Mario fan, this movie did make me feel like a kid a bit. I will say I wish the movie was a bit longer cause there were times it felt like it was rushing and we got more time with Mario and Luigi but I think the movie still works. And I can't wait for the sequel.

I also thought Chris Pratt did pretty good as Mario, I know a lot of people gave him shit, for no reason in my opinion, but like I said, he did the best he could. You could also tell that Jack Black was having a blast on playing Bowser and I think he was the best part of the movie. And yes, the song Peaches is catchy as hell.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 3

This one has to be the best Marvel movie since No Way Home (yes, I loved Multiverse of Madness but I did have some problems with it). And I think this movie gave a great conclusion to these characters that we've followed since 2014.

I will say if you love animals, this movie might be hard for you to watch as we do explore Rocket's backstory and how he was experimented on and you see a bit of it.

And I will also say that Adam Warlock could've been cut out from the movie because he did feel kinda like an afterthought. And plus he acted to much like an idiot but that might get fixed in future Marvel movies.

Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse

Might be a bit of an unpopular opinion but while I did really like this movie, I don't think it is as good as the first one or the masterpiece everyone is making it out to be. And that's because the first movie felt like a complete movie while this one didn't really. It feels like we are missing the third Act of the film, I know we're getting a third movie but...I don't know it just feels like a part 1 of the full story.

The animation again is gorgeous and I love the comic book style to it.

Transformers Rise Of The Beasts

I know the Transformers movies get a lot of shit but I find enjoyment in them. And I think this movie is probably one of the best movie in the franchise. The action was very good, the CGI on the Transformers were really good. And the human characters were actually really good and tolerable where I'll admit that some of the human characters in the other movies were a bit annoying and took up too much screen time from the Transformers.

The Flash

*Sigh* This movie has to be the worst movie I saw this year. The CGI was God awful, I mean I've seen better CGI in video games. I always thought that doing the Flashpoint storyline from the comic was a bad idea for the first solo Flash movie. I also didn't really care for how Ezra Miller played Barry Allen as I was exposed to Grant Gustin's version and he played that character way better. It also doesn't help with all the shit Ezra got involved with before the movie came out.

I also felt that having Micheal Keaton's Batman in the movie really didn't make sense and was just trying to get people more excited for the movie. And Supergirl felt very shoehorned in and like she was a last minute addition to the movie.

Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny

This is another movie that I feel that got shit on and hated on way too much. I mean it was better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and on par with Temple of Doom but not as good as Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Last Cursade.

But I thought the movie was pretty good and had some fun to it. Yes I'll admit the Goddaughter was really annoying and I know her character is supposed to be an asshole but I thought she leaned in too much in that persona. I also didn't like her little kid sidekick, he was very annoying.

Five Nights At Freddy's

I'm only a casual fan of this franchise and know a bit about it but I went ahead to give the movie a chance as I'm always worried about adaptations on video games. But I thought this movie was pretty good and was a bit of a love letter to fans. The animatronics I thought looked great and I thought Josh Hutcherson was great.

I do wish this movie went a bit darker but I know they were wanting kids to see it. And I think it should've shorten some stuff but I also think this movie should've been longer to flesh out a few important things. But I still think this was a pretty good movie.

Good Omens

This show was pretty decent. David Tennant and Michael Sheen steal the show and I believe they are the best part. I have only seen the first season, I forgot the second season came out so I haven't gotten around to see it, so no spoilers for season 2! But based on the first season, I wanted more of David and Micheal as I thought the story with the Anti-Christ kid was kinda boring and uninteresting.

The Boys

I had heard that this show was pretty good but when I jumped in, I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. I thought this show's take on Superheroes was great and refreshing. Most of the characters are interesting. And while I hate him, I do think Homelander steals the show...for the most part. And my favorite character has got to be Soldier Boy, not just because Jensen Ackles plays but I found his character interesting and it left me wanting more of him.

And here is where my big criticism comes in. While most of season 3 is great, that finale is really rough. I don't know why but the show demands you to think that Soldier Boy is worse than Homelander. And I'm like, I've had three seasons worth of this show showing me how much of a psychopath Homelander is.

I mean, he even tells Starlight that without the people's love for him, he was just gonna cause a massacre. And he killed her friend, very brutally.

But yet Soldier Boy blows up a building, which killed about 19 people I believe, that was caused by a PTSD moment he got from his time imprisoned in a Russian Lab and suddenly he's the bad guy, he must be stopped, he's the bigger threat!

I'm sorry I just didn't buy it as from what they showed me in the show, yeah he's a dick but I didn't think he was as psychotic as Homelander, who is so much worse and a much bigger threat.

So I also didn't like how pretty much Butcher turns against Soldier Boy, just because he attacked Ryan. I know Ryan is the son of Butcher's Wife but the kid has superpowers and plus Butcher never really cared for the kid. But also Ryan attack Soldier Boy first as they were about to take down Homelander.

I just think the show really missed out on having a depowered Homelander for the next season cause it would be interesting to see how he copes without his powers.

But if it's true that Soldier Boy is coming back for season 4 (judging by that Jensen was spotted wearing a cap that says The Boys season 4 on it the other day leads me to believe that) then hopefully they'll make up for that finale.

Gen V

This is the spinoff of The Boys, this time focusing on late teens/early adults. And I was a bit worried about this show as I've always thought spinoff can go bad. But luckily this show was really good, I'm on the fence on whether saying it's better than The Boys or not but I'd say it's just as good.

I do think the characters are a bit more likable than the characters in The Boys. The action was pretty good and the cameos of the characters in The Boys were all pretty good.

The only bad thing I'll say for the show is that I think one episode should've either been cut or the story of the episode should've been like half of the episode. And that is the one where the kids have a chunk of their memories missing and they have no idea what happened the last few days and they're trying to figure it out. I felt that episode kinda paused the plot a little too long.

Big Sky

This is a crime/cop drama show and I had heard the show was pretty good and I'm sad it didn't get renewed for season 4. But for what we got I thought it was pretty good, I thought Cassie and Jenny are great characters and I thought they played off each other really well. And Beau Arlen, my beloved (or Sheriff Sexy as Slinky and I dubbed him), is just so adorable and I wish we got more of his backstory cause we don't know much about him. Maybe they could do a spin-off about him but I don't know.

I will say the whole storyline with Ronald Pergman was stretched out a little too long. I think his story should've just been season 1 and then season 2 should've focused just on the drug cartel stuff just like how Season 3 was dealing with this murder going on near the campsite.

But other than that, I thought this show was really good and I wish we got more of it and maybe ABC might reconsider it down the road but I doubt it.

The Winchesters

This is a spin-off to Supernatural and I didn't watch it til the full show was out and just binged watched it. And while I think the show has some problems, I don't think it's a bad show. Yeah, it was weird that they did a show revolving around John and Mary when we already knew their story but they also changed it up and going against continuity. Luckily, they do say it's another universe so that made it a bit better.

I also feel like the show should've been longer as I felt we really didn't get to know the main villain and her defeat in the finale was dealt with way too quickly. I also thought how Dean was brought into the show was just weird and really didn't make sense.

But I will say this show is better than some of the later seasons of Supernatural. Yeah I said it come at me! Lol.

That's all of the shows and movies I watched in 2023 and my little thoughts on them. Hope ya'll enjoyed it!
