And Then There Were None - Rewrite
Warning: this chapter contains spoilers for the last chapter of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. If you haven't read the book you can still read this without ruining anything, but don't read if you are in the process of reading the book.
This was an assignment for school, out goal was to rewrite the last chapter without spoiling anything, so I hope you enjoy.
Vera and Lombard both sat in the kitchen perplexed with the situation at hand. Both of them rightfully accusing each other for the murders of the eight other people that were once on the island, now their corpses, but neither of them having anything to truly base those accusations off of. Both of them have gone delirious, traumatized by the eight images of dead bodies engraved and running through their minds. It felt like hours going by, but it was truly only minutes of dead silence. Both of their minds going wild thinking what if the other makes a move.
It was Lombard who finally broke the silence, “ Why?” he asked. And just like that it was like someone had cut through the thick tension of the room with a knife, the air finally felt breathable and somewhat clear again.
Vera replied, “ What do you mean why? Isn’t it obvious that one of us is the lunatic that has cold bloodedly murdered eight people? I know it wasn’t me because I haven’t the physical strength or mental capacity to do such a terrible thing.”
Lombard smirked, visibly amused by the words that Vera had just spoken. Lombard replied, loathe evident in his voice, “ Don’t you remember what Armstrong said he said even a woman was capable both physically and mentally to kill someone. Also I have enough evidence as is to prove you’re the mass murderer.”
“ And what would that be?” Vera responded, a tone of glee rolling off her tongue as she spoke.
“ The fact of the matter that you lost it right after we found Roger’s corpse with an ax in his head in that shed. You started reciting that sick nursery rhyme saying that the murderer would follow it exactly. You went insane and were in the midst of a psychotic meltdown. I have also heard about your past with Hugo. That poor man I can’t believe that he loves you.”
“ What do you mean that he loves me? He hates me.” Vera replied flustered at the mention of Hugo’s name. She wondered how Lombard even knew about him, unless that means he did his research about everyone before he came here. Maybe that means he knows about what she did to Cyril. Maybe I should get rid of him before he gets rid of me.
“ I could see through you the whole time, you were easy to read.” Lombard was now chancing his luck with Vera, but he was trying to provoke her. Maybe, just maybe he would be able to get her to reveal herself.
“ You should really learn how to keep your mouth shut Lombard. You know for how smart you try to make yourself sound you truly are an idiot.” Vera replied, malice dripping from her voice. It was now or never. “ You know Lombard I never really truly wanted to kill that kid, but I had no other choice. He was in the way, it was like he was asking for it always being around Hugo, making me seem to be in the wrong. He was a brat always asking to swim out to that island, he thought he could, even though it was a mile out, but I knew he couldn’t. So one day I gave in, I let him swim out and he drowned. I could have swam out to save him, but I didn’t. He was an obstacle, now he was out of the way, it was a win win situation. I thought no one suspected me, but apparently I was wrong. Hugo found out, so now he hates me.” Vera explained her story as she quickly got up and ran to Lombard and grabbed the revolver from his pocket and pointed it at his head.
“ Woah! Woah! Ms. Claythorne let’s not rush into things here.” Lombard’s words were slurred from how fast he spoke them.
Vera ; however, was quicker than him and didn’t give him enough time to explain himself and shot him in the head.
With a bullet now lodged in his head it was quite obvious that Lombard was dead, but just to make sure Vera shot him again, this time through the heart. Now with everyone on the island dead, even though she didn’t kill all of them. She felt guilty, even though she had killed Cyril. It’s not like she was there when he actually died, but this time it was different, she actually did the killing part of it and it felt terrible. She wasn’t lying when she told Lombard that she didn’t have the mental capacity to actually do it.
She didn’t have a point or purpose in life anymore, so why not finish the story. She looked at her surroundings. She saw a dead body, a pen, a piece of paper, a rope, and a knife. She grabbed everything, except the dead body of course. She dragged the knife across the wall as she walked up the stairs to get to her room. She was going to write a note explaining everything that happened on the island, then kill herself, it seemed like the only reasonable thing to do.
The note read, ‘ Hello, if you are reading this that means that you have found ten bodies on this island including mine. What has happened here is that a lunatic murdered eight people. Now you must be wondering if there are ten bodies than how come the murderer only killed eight. Well you see I killed myself and the person in the kitchen. It was just us two left and I knew it wasn’t me who killed everyone, so I killed him before he could kill me, it was my only option. So it was not a coincidence that all of this happened. I personally don’t know who the killer is, but I hope you can figure it out. Good luck!’ signed Vera Claythorne.
The only thing left to do was to kill herself. She grabbed the rope, tied it in a nooce, and attached it to the hook that was so conveniently in her room. She wanted to make sure she was real because everything was still in a haze from killing Lombard. She also wanted to make sure the police could test that the note was from her, so she cut herself on her wrist very deeply and dripped her blood on the letter. Last thing left was to set up a chair and jump. She grabbed the chair, put it under the hook that the rope was attached to, stepped onto the chair, and put the rope around her neck.
She said, “ Hugo if only you would have realized sooner how much I loved you. I was envious of a child, so I killed him, yes, but I killed him for you, so that we could be together. I hope now you realize that your actions have consequences.” Then she heard slow clapping which startled her. A person then emerged from the corner of the room.
“ Wargrave!” she exclaimed astonished at the man who was supposedly dead in front of her very eyes.
“ Yes, indeed Ms. Claythorne.” Justice Wargrave responded amused at the sight he saw in front of him. He then walked up to Vera and kicked the chair out from under her. He then walked out of the room and recited the last phrase of the nursery rhyme he planned this whole mass murder on.
“ And then there were none.”
“ And then there were none.”
“ And then there were none.”
“ And then there were …” Justice Wargrave then shot himself in the head.
And then there were none.
Thank you for reading my story, I hope you enjoyed it.
