The Delivery Men

This is me, writing out the dream I had last night. Don't judge my subconscious.

We all sat in the hallway, waiting for our counselor to come out and give us the rest of our uniforms. This week at camp, we were having a competition and I was on the blue team. We had a full outfit of blue everything, and today was 'cape day' as we called it. Our counselor, on the other hand, must've forgotten and left us sitting in the oven that was the hallway for the past three hours.

"When can we leave?" Someone asked.

"Yeah! We don't need the capes! I'm leaving!" Someone else shouted. A couple people shouted agreements and walked out of the hall and towards the exit. I rolled my eyes and joined them, since the capes would only get in the way. I ran up to the little group and walked with them through the forest to our cabin with the setting sun in the distance. One of the girls swung open the door and we all ran in to grab our shower bags. We raced into the bathroom and got in line with the first four turning on the shower heads.

"Five minutes starting now!" I shouted in the bathroom. "Lilly, can you keep time for a while? I have to leave for a second."

"Sure thing." She replied, taking the timer to watch the time. I strolled out of the steamy bathroom and over to the front of the building and opened up the door. I saw the only paved road in the distance, and a large truck driving through it and stopped at the mailbox. I slammed the front door shut and waited until I heard a knock at the door, then I opened it again. I was greeted by a short man with light brown hair and a clip board to sign for the package. He went on with the usual delivery man speech and I signed for the package.

I needed to order an iPad for our cabin and for my own movie watching needs. I quickly booted it up and browsed the movies. There was one I really wanting to watch, it was called Noel. (I actually looked this up in real life, and it is a real movie that looks very boring.) I kept swiping around the program looking for the movie, but it was nowhere to be seen. I pulled on my shoes and ran outside in a dire attempt to catch the delivery guys and replace the iPad with the correct one that had the movie. (Jeez, ok Karen.)

I ran after their truck all the way to a large hotel where the two men in the truck got out and strolled inside the building. I followed after them and jumped into the elevator with them but stayed quiet.

"I dunno, Mike," said the tall one. "I have a feeling that we're going to get lucky tonight at the lottery reading."

"I wouldn't listen to your 'feeling'. Last time you had a feeling we got pulled over by the police, three days in a row."

"Yes, but I had a feeling that would happen." The doors of the elevator flung open to a large, crowded room with a stage in the center and a food court around the top. (This is pre/post corona. Crowding is no longer a problem.)

"Come on!" The tall one said, motioning for me to follow them. "We can't be late to the reading." Why do they want me to tag along? I thought while catching up to them. The shorter one who was named 'Mike' pulled a lottery ticket out of his pocket and we all stopped a few feet away from the stage, along with nearly a hundred other people.

"What are we doing!" I yelled over crowd.

"We're waiting for the lottery reading to see if we won!" The taller one replied.

"By the way, I'm Mike and he's David!" Mike said, motioning over to the tall one with black hair.

"OK!" A lady walked out onto the stage after only a few minutes and everyone went silent. Mike and I stood on our toes while David could easily see over heads. The lady walked around and pulled a small ping-pong ball out of a little basket. David had his fingers crossed and Mike was muttering something.

"Five." The lady said into the microphone. There were various cheers and sighs.

"Three, three, three." Mike and David whispered together, and I joined in. "Three, three, three."

"Three." The lady said again.

"YEAH!" We celebrated, giving high-fives to each other. All three of us grabbed hands and poured over the ticket and waited for the next number to be called.

"Eight." There were only three numbers left and they would win one million dollars.

"Come on, come on."

"Six."

"NO!" Mike exploded.

"NOT POSSIBLE!" David exclaimed, staring at the ticket looking for a six, when all he saw was a four.

"Oh, come on!" I yelled at her. Even though I knew I wouldn't get any money, I still wanted the best for Mike and David. The crowd around us started to get rowdy, hitting and screaming, so I escaped upstairs to the food court. It was positioned in a way where I could look over the railing and get a direct view of the crowd and see where Mike and David were.

I went and got some food and when I came back to my place on the railing, the two were gone. I decided to not to worry about them, and I found a nice table to eat my food. A while later, I spotted them again. They were all the way on the other side of the food court ring. I ran around the perimeter to meet up with them again and to get an update on what they won.

"Hey, again." David welcomed, as Mike stood up to throw their trash away.

"Hey. Do we know what happened?" I sat down in a chair across from David.

"Yeah. Nobody got a full match, so we got half." He replied gloomily.

"Why are you so sad? You still won half a million dollars, which is... $500,000. Split between you to it's... $250,000, that's still a crap-ton of money. (I actually got the math wrong in my dream. In the actual dream I said it was $50,000 and $25,000. Now I know my subconscious is bad at math too. A little part of me wished it wasn't so.)

"Yeah, I guess so." He started to stand up as Mike came back from throwing things away.

"Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's about time for us to head on." Mike began to gather his things.

"Would you mind if I tagged along?" I knew the answer was no, but I figured I should ask anyway.

"No. We're driving across the state constantly and I think having you in our backseat would be considered kidnapping." David contradicted.

"Oh. Right. Didn't think of that." I stood up with them, headed over to the elevator and got in. Mike jabbed the lobby button and it slowly began to head down. We headed out to the parking lot and Mike and David jumped into their large truck.

"Well, it was nice knowing you." David said from the driver's seat.

"Give her the card!" Mike said from the other side.

"We have a card?" (My question too, David. Do delivery men have cards? *Opens up a google tab* No, No they do not.)

"Yeah. Did you not know?"

"Well clearly not if I was asking." I heard fumbling with papers and David put his head out of the window again. "We have a card!" He chirped, handing me a card.

"Thanks!"

"We hope to run into you again!" I heard Mike say from the other seat.

"Me to." I stepped back from the truck since I didn't want to get run-over that night. I gave a farewell salute. David returned the gesture and drove off down the highway. A shot of sadness hit my heart. Tonight, was the most fun I've had since I was sent off to this horrid camp, I didn't want it to end just like that. I looked down at the card I was given and smiled. This wouldn't be the end.

It was a dream, ok?!?!?! It's not supposed to be good. Also, it was 1,376 words. I might write spin-offs about this and make the three go on actual adventures with pLoT. (Oooo, ahhh) Is it bad that I actually really like this dream? Also the characters Mike and David, didn't have names in the dream. I remember they looked a bit like Tulio and Miguel from The Road to El Dorado and I almost named them as such. You could also think of them as the Netflix adaptation of Grian and Mumbo. Anyways, I hope y'all have a good day/night.

Love y'all!
