Soulmate AU

I ran as soon as the bell rang, brown hair flying from math class. The lockers were a blur as I rushed to put my math books away and grabbed my dusty pink English binder and a Wordly Wise book. I speeded to the English room, at the front of the school, dropped my stuff off, and sprinted to the handball court. Even was already playing with Owen. Jonathan, Ethan, and Blake were in line.  Even got out while I caught my breath. My heart quickened as my necklace- silver chain with a dragon wrapped around an aqua pendant- started to glow brighter. I tucked it into my shirt quickly before he had a chance to notice. Blake started to play and Jonathan walked across to the other side, next to go in line. I rubbed my shoulder, where Evan’s name was written. To late, Even noticed.

“Sarah, why is your shirt turning blue?” he asked. I stuttered a bit.

“I-it’s umm, uh… t-the soulmate thing…” I trailed off.

“Oh.” his face turned slightly red. I looked down at the ground, doing rmybest not to look at them.

“What is your soulmate’s name, if we may know?” Blake asked, swinging his blonde hair out of his face before hitting the ball again. I looked at the sky, avoiding their gazes, but mostly Evan’s.

“Y-you wouldn’t like it if I did,”

“Please?”

“Hmph.” I said, trying to distract them. “There’s a cloud the looks like a turtle. Interesting,”

“Sarah, stop being evasive.” Ethan said plainly.

“Yeah, It’s gonna get you nowhere.” Owen pipped in.

Blake lost. “Please?” he begged, getting in line. I sighed, pawing at the black asphalt beneath me. “Fine.” They cheered. I rolled up the sleeve on my right arm, revealing the marking of words on my upper arm by my shoulder. The handball court fell silent. I could feel their stares. I looked up to see them, opened mouth, flabbergasted. Evan’s face went red; he was in disbelief.

“I- Is this... for real?” he asked, dark eyes peeling off her arm and into my hazel eyes.

“No, I totally carved your name into my skin and got a magic necklace that glows whenever you’re near by.” I rolled my eyes. “Of course it’s real.” I smirked at their baffled expressions. “I told you that you wouldn’t like it.”

“Well, yeah, but we never would’ve believed you.” Owen remarked

“Oh, jeez, thanks.” she rolled her eysles. “No wonder I have my favorites.” she mutter under her breath. “I know I’m me, but you can still depend on what I say; you can still believe what I speak.”

“Can we though?” Owen challenged.

“Yes.” I flared, hissing the ‘s’ slightly. “Of course you can trust me.”

“Can we?” Now he was just getting me mad. I puffed my chest out, shoulders back, head up.

“YES.” I felt- and heard- my voice get lower and louder. My eyes narrowed angrily and I bared my teeth at him, thinking, If only you knew. He stared Into my eyes, and I stared back, unwavering.

“Okay, this is messed up.” Jonathan put in, his disturbing, ugly, creaky voice breaking the silence.

“No you.” My voice came out as a snarl as I turned to glare at him. That was true. He was weird, and in the bad way. His dark eye widened and he put his hands up defensively before shutting up.  “I’m just saying.” Was his last comment. He knew better than to mess with me. Or, at least, he should know. If anything can get through that thick skull. “Enough.” Even stopped us. I, respectively, turned back to him, an innocent look on my face, all traces of anger gone. If he was my soulmate, then I had to respect him. I mentally shrugged. It could’ve been someone better, but oh well.

“Yes?” I asked

“Just-- just stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Arguing.”

“Okay. Good luck with that.” They all laughed while I smirked. “‘Cause that ain’t likely to be possible.”

“That’s true.” Even agreed.

“Of course it’s true.” I retorted. “I said it.” They all laughed some more. It turned out that this wasn't so horrible after all. Perhaps she could trust her friends after all.
