It is possible that Rafael the toucan might be named after one of the director's (Carlos Saldanha's) children, Rafael Saldanha, or one of the storyboard artists, Rafael Zentil.

 It's more likely that Rafael in the movies is named after Rafael Saldanha than the storyboard artist.
