Picking your nose
You can pick your friends. You can pick your nose. But you can't pick your friends nose.
It's a saying I've always heard and it rarely made sense. Personally, I think it's a lie. You can't pick your friends, not really. From what I've seen in my measly 17 years on this earth, I've realized that friendship isn't so much a choice, but something already decided. Popular people are more often then not also friends with popular people. The misfits almost always go to other misfits. The band geeks to the band geeks. The brainiacs to the brainiacs. Yes, it may be because of similar interests. I don't know. I think who we are friends with is determined by who society thinks we should be friends with.
Furthermore, I believe there are only two types of friendships: choice friends and convenience friends. Choice friends are the ones that you picked for yourself. They could be from your social ranking or not. Convenience friends are friends that you might not have chosen to be with. They are the people that you do class projects with. Not the ones you have sleepovers with. You were put together. Or maybe you chose them, but they turned into convenience friends. I had a few, as much as I hate to admit it. Lately though, I'm letting those friendships drift apart instead of clinging on to them.
Maybe it can go the other way too. I have two(my only two friends) best friends. I love them so much. One of them started as a convenience friend.
I'm getting better at being okay with being able to count the number of friends I have on one hand. Although it does suck when they're both at work and I'm not. So even if the saying isn't completely true. It is true that you cant(or shouldn't) pick your friends nose. Even if they are a choice friend.
