Darry: Bears
Why: If you ask him, he'll give you a long speech about how bears signify braveness and strength, and how he feels he can most relate to them, yada yada yada. In honesty, he has a stuffed teddy bear that he's had since he was five, and he's loved bears ever since.

Sodapop: Horses
Why: Horses remind him of his horse, Mickey Mouse, which he used to ride until the horse got bought and sent away. Horses also remind him of freedom, which he wishes he had more of.

Ponyboy: Dogs
Why: Dogs are just nice, and Ponyboy used to have a dog. He wishes he could have another one, but it would cost to much money to get and take care of.

Johnny: Birds of all types, especially doves
Why: When he was a kid, Johnny wanted to be a bird, so he could fly away from his abusive parents. He especially likes doves, because of their beauty and how they signify hope.

Two-Bit: Mice
Why: "Mickey Mouse."
(When asked why, Two-Bit just gave these two words as an answer. It is still unknown what he meant.)

Dally: Snakes
Why: When asked why, Dally gave the mysterious answer, "I just like snakes, okay? Why? Who sent you?"
From later investigation throughout his friends, it was found that Dallas is actually a snake fanatic, and has been obsessed since childhood.

Steve: Monkeys
Why: Steve honestly has no idea why. He just really likes monkeys.
