Lecture Hall 14 - February 14th - 4:09 PM

Ruby's POV

"10 seconds..." Again, I instinctively check my scroll for the time. This is the eighth time in a minute I've checked it. My knee starts shaking and my legs start to feel weak. 

As I pull out my scroll one last time, the classroom door slides open. My eyes quickly scan the time before putting the scroll away.

"You're really always on time, aren't you?" I try to mask my nervousness, but it's obviously mixed in a fake, cheery tone.

"I try." His voice was rather monotone, but a little exhausted at the same time.

An air of awkwardness sat between us for the next few seconds. Neither of us said anything until I spoke up.

"You know what today is, right?" My knee starts shaking again. My nerves were telling me to go back to the dorm with the girls, but I steeled myself and continued to stand in front of (y/n).

(y/n)'s POV

Today's date, I think to myself.

"February 14th, right?" Valentine's Day is today. I mentally ready myself for what Ruby has to say.

Ruby's cheeks puffed a little before she spoke again. "It's Valentine's Day, (y/n)!" She took a seat at one of the benches nearby.

"I see." I walk over to the door and slide it shut. Hopefully, no one comes around to check on the rooms just yet. You know, can't be in the rooms without permission when classes aren't in session.

"Seeing that you didn't know it was Valentine's Day today, I'm assuming you haven't been given any chocolates. Am I right?" There was a tinge of hope deep in Ruby's innocent silver eyes. Can't tell if she's trying to hurt my feelings by saying that.

"Actually, I did get some." 

"What?" Ruby's voice shook a little. "...from who? Was it a confession or something?"

"Ren was giving them away earlier at lunch." I scratch my head a little, trying to think back to what he said at the time. "Said he made too many so he decided to give everyone at the cafeteria some."

Ruby released a deep sigh of relief. "Oh... Ren gave them away." She placed a hand on her chest to steady herself. "Makes sense since you never really got any, right?"

Again, is she trying to hurt my feelings?

"Then, I guess I have no choice." Ruby reached into her bag and pulled out a small red box with a thin white ribbon that ran across its rectangular shape. "Here!" She swiftly placed the box in my hand and retreated a few steps.

I undo the ribbon and remove the lid of the box. Inside laid a few pieces of chocolate that filled the interior of the container. "Chocolates?"

"Of course! It's Valentine's Day!" She announced proudly. "Made with love by yours truly! Make sure you savour them fully!"

A small smile crept onto my face. "Even if this is for friendship reasons, thanks, Rubes." I place my hand on her head and give it a pat.

Ruby's POV

I guess he really does see me as just a friend...

"Hey (y/n)?"

"Hm?"

"If I told you I love you, would you believe me?" I surprised myself with the sudden half-confession. I steel myself for his answer, scared he'd shoot me down. "It's a 'what if' scenario," I say to cover my tracks a little.

(y/n) thinks about it for a moment.

"Not sure, honestly..." His voice was muddled with his own thoughts.

"It'll leave you confused, huh?" I guess this was the answer I expected. "We've been friends for so long, I guess it's a given that we'd be near each other forever. Almost like siblings, really."

Then, silence ensued between us.

(y/n)'s POV

I mean, I know she likes me... I've been keeping a close eye on her for the past month to see if it really was true. After Yang told me about Ruby's feelings back when we went to Signal, I got curious, but what am I supposed to say? I know how you feel? I've been watching you for so many years? I've been asking your teammates about you?

As thoughts ran through my head, Ruby soft voice spoke up. "Sorry, that was a dumb thing to ask." Her voice was a little shaky. "Wanna head back to the dorms?"

I respond with a nod.

"Why did you want to meet here in the classroom anyway?" I ask Ruby.

"For the atmosphere, I guess." She shrugs off the question and starts packing up her bag.

She makes her way to the door and swings it open. I walk beside her and exit the room.

"By the way, are your classes confirmed for next semester?" Ruby decides to start the small talk between us.

"Not yet, you?"

"Same."

Then, just like a few seconds ago, the silence commences once again.

Whenever I look over to Ruby, conflict is written all over her face. She seems nervous about something.

"You OK, Ruby?" This was one of the rare times I'd refer to her as Ruby instead of Rubes or Red. It always gets her to fess up to something.

She stops walking and her gaze meets the ground. She stands there silent for a moment. Her hands curl into fists and rest in front of her chest.

"C-Can I ask you again?" Her voice started wavering again and her shoulders were visibly shaking.

I stopped in front of Ruby and turned to face her.

She took my silence as a signal to continue.

"I-If I told you I love you..." Ruby's small hands clenched hard into fists and she grits her teeth to prevent tears from falling. "Would you believe me?"

Again, I stood there unable to say anything.

Ruby then continued. "Not as childhood friends and of course not as siblings." She sniffled a little and her hands rose to her mouth. "But from a girl to a guy..."

The words got stuck in my throat, unable to escape. Ruby's silver eyes looked up into my (e/c) ones. The tears on the edge of her eyes, on the verge of plummeting down her cheeks. I force myself to say something, but the words remained trapped.

Her wet eyes shine in the sunlight and the tears finally break free.

"Those chocolates..." Her voice shook harder than before now that the tension was released. "Those chocolates aren't ones of friendship..." Her knees started shaking again. 

In fear of her legs giving up on themselves, I took a step forward and extended my hands towards her, hoping she'd fall towards me. Instead, she took a step back. "Ever since we were at Signal, I've been trying to be honest and tell you..."

She then dropped to her knees, her legs finally giving up on her. I took a few more steps towards her.

"I know you've been given chocolates from other girls every Valentine's Day. I know you've been confessed to multiple times every Valentine's Day. I know you've been trying to hide these things from me every Valentine's Day." Ruby's tears continued to fall in greater intensity with every word she said. I kneeled down to her and brought her into a hug. Not a tight one or a forceful one, just one to let her know I was there.

"I'm sorry, Rubes..." I can feel her body trembling in my embrace. Her head fell onto my shoulder. "I know you've been making chocolates for the past month for today. I've been checking up on you for a while now. Ever since Yang mentioned it back at Signal, every year I'd watch you work hard to make those chocolates."

Ruby's body tensed up while I spoke but gradually relaxed afterwards. She dug her head farther into my chest, mostly for comfort, but partially to wipe her tears in my shirt.

"If you knew all along, why didn't you say anything?" Her voice was a lot calmer than before but was muffled by my shirt.

"I didn't know what to say... I'm really sorry." 

The two of us remained in the embrace for a while. She eventually wrapped her arms around my back as well.

"(y/n)?" Ruby then broke the silence that hung over us.

"Hm?"

"If I told you I love you, would you believe me?" This time, Ruby's voice came out clear.

A small smile grew on my face before answering. "If I told you I love you, would you believe me?"

Ruby raised her head from my chest with a pout on her face. The pout quickly faded and changed to a toothy smile.

"I would."

A/N

Little late, but this is done. All four members of team RWBY. I didn't write these in order. Instead, I'm gonna publish them in order. The A/Ns are gonna be kinda mixed and all over the place.
