dogs
I closed the door to the break room, walking in and sighing as I poured a cup of coffee. The smell alone woke me up, as my boss walked in. "Coffee any good?" She asked.
"Heck yes." I took a giant sip, the warm liquid being nice during the winter days. I set my winter coat down on the chair, trying to adjust to the warm building. "How many we got coming in today?"
"Not many, but one of our most famous clients is coming in. They come in here all the time, and so we plan to give them a discount." I nodded.
"Is it my best buddy?" I smiled, remember the dog that I always see. "I've never met the owner though."
"Hopefully today you will," She laughed. "It's weird being best friends with a dog when you don't even know the owner." We both chuckled as we drank our coffee.
A couple other workers came in and grabbed some coffee and a donut. I put my paper cup in the garbage, wiping the chocolate frosting off my mouth with a napkin.
I walked to the grooming station, setting things up and making sure I had everything in stock that I used. The first dog came in, Herman. He was a yellow lab, sweet as could be.
He loved bubble baths and usually fell asleep while I was cutting and grooming him. Then Susie came in, a little Yorkie. Stubborn.
Dog after dog, they came through time after time. My boss was right, we weren't busy today. I finally gave the final dog back to the front desk and I hear the door open as I'm writing the appointment review down. I look down to see a familiar little face looking up at me. "Bogart!!" I yelled and crouched down, petting and kissing him.
Bogart was my absolute best friend. We always played in the bubble bath, him splashing around and getting the floor and me all soaked. When I cut his fur, he was always good. He was crying and whimpering as I was rubbing his belly, he was pleased. Then a man whistled and Bogart flipped over and sat staring up. I followed his gaze to a tall man. He had brown hair, which was sadly covered with a beanie. He had black glasses, and beautiful eyes, if I say so myself. He smiled at me and I smiled back. "You must be my buddies owner!" I stood from my crouching position and went up to him m, holding my hand out. He shook it. "I'm Y/N."
"Hi! I'm Brendon. You must be Bogart's buddy." We both laughed when Bogart jumped on my leg, wanting me to hold him.
I crouched down to pick him up and he lathered my cheek with doggy kisses. "Oh yeah, we're best friends." I laughed as Bogart wouldn't stop.
"It was nice to meet you, have fun Bogart." Bogart gave Brendon a kiss before he handed me the leash and left.
The next couple of times Bogart came in, I made sure to be out in the lobby to see Brendon. He was a nice dude and I came to have a crush on him.
"Bogart, you know you have a cool owner? You think you could ask him out for me? I don't know if I can...I'm a chicken ya know?" Bogart just looked at me, tilting his head or barking softly in response. "Yeah, I should've known you would say that. I just don't know if he likes me that way though!" He barked again. "I know it's been almost a year since I first saw him Bo! But hey, I've still got-"
"You like me?" My face burned up red as Brendon came into the back to the grooming section of the dog place. "And I don't think Bogart would be good at asking me out for you." He laughed as my face turned more red. "So why don't you let me do it?" He lifted my head with a finger. "Let's get coffee after you're shift." He said it as a statement, not a question, as if I was obliged to go, not having a choice.
"Then let me say yes." I smiled and he smiled back, taking Bogart after I finished, then gave him my number as well.
I text him after we closed up shop.
Y: hey shifts over, I'll meet you on the corner of Oak Street and Fair Avenue.
B: I'll be there, can't wait to see you.
I smiled at my phone as I started my car up, heading down the street. I pulled in, parking quickly as possible, but then things going black as I was walking.
I wake up, pain coursing through every inch of my body, causing a groan to escape my lips. Doctors rushed in, checking dials and screens. What the hell happened? Where the fuck am I? The doctors left, revealing Brendon in the doorway.
Tears were in his eyes. Hands in his pockets, head hanging low. "I'm so glad you're awake." He voice was laced with happy tears.
"How long was I out?"
"4 weeks, Doctors called you dead 3 times within that. Heart stopped each time, but you wouldn't give up." He smiled at it, then looked up at me. "They uh, let me bring someone. Close your eyes."
I closed them, feeling something land on my lap. "Open."
"BO!!!" He barked and crawled up to me, putting his paws on my chest and licking my face. "Aw!!"
"I know how much you two love each other." He smiled at us.
"Yeah, about that-"
"I love you too." He beat me to it. I just blushed, smiling also.
"Well, you'll have to fight Bogart for that title my friend."
