In his past life Michael was criticized by his mother in every aspect of himself,  and he always sought her validation and approval, and when she wasn't pleased he largely blamed himself for not reaching her standards feeling like a disappointment  and a burden ( add she guilt - trips the shit out of him )  he feels like a peice of shit every time she criticizes  him.
