"Alfred, there's a letter for you from South Carolina." Alice said, looking up from the address of the letter.

"It's from Arthur Kirkland, I'll read it later." Alfred smiled and shrugged, not looking up from his paper work as he waved a dismissive hand.

"No, it's not."

Meanwhile

Francis, while on his way back to France, covered his face with his hands, not letting the crew see his tears.

Antonio downed another beer, in memory of his comrade, ignoring the tears and wiping them off as if they were just drops of his drink. Lovina rested a hand on his shoulder, frowning at the emotionless look in her husband's eyes.

Ludwig buried his face in Feliciana's shoulder, silently weeping as little Feliciana peeked from around the corner.

General Gilbert had a stoic face on as Madeline wrapped her arms around his waist in a hug from behind.

Michelle looked up from her letter to her baby girl sleeping in a crib, and smiled weakly. 'I'll find you a new father.' She promised. After all, Arthur had only married her so her reputation wouldn't be diminished for a simple mistake, like the gentleman he was.

Back to Alfred

"Will you read it?" Alfred asked, too scared to look at her.

"On Tuesday the 27th, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Kirkland was killed in a gunfight against British troops from South Carolina. These troops had not yet received word from Yorktown that the war was over. He's buried here until his family can send for his remains. As you may know, Lieutenant Colonel Kirkland was engaged in recruiting 3000 men for the first all-black military regiment. The surviving members of this regiment have been returned to their masters."

Alfred looked up from his work, and across the room, just for a split second, he saw Arthur smiling at him, holding a beer mug high.

"Tomorrow there'll be more of us..." He could almost hear him say.

But the image was gone.

"Alfred, are you alright?" Alice asked, resting a hand on her husband's shoulder.

Alfred kept his eyes glued to the wall where his friend's (a/n: *cough*and lover[theyweregaynoonecanconvincemeotherwise]*cough*) image once was.

"I have so much work to do." Alfred whispered, looking back down at the papers on his desk.

During Arthur's Death:

Arthur opened his tired eyes and looked up at the night sky, smiling despite the pain he was in. The cool breeze made his hair blow lightly. He could just barely see Alfred's face within the stars, and reached out for them.

"I may not live to see our glory, but I will gladly join the fight. And when our children tell our story..." He coughed up blood, but continued to smile. "They'll tell the story of...tonight..." He closed his eyes and dropped his hand. He lay dead on the grassy land, but had a small smile despite it all.

By the time another soldier found him, they were too late. Arthur Kirkland was a dead man, but he died thinking of his best friend. (A/n:*cough*AND LOVER*cough*)
