Zelan's 'Femininity' and Verose's 'Masculinity'
Can you tell I'm obsessed with Freaking Romance?
(anyway Freaking Romance was also recommended by MFOshin. I'm not mentioning her because don't wanna bog her notifs with 'recommended by MFOshin!' But THANK you for recommending this it ruined my life I think of this EVERY DAY ALDJKFASJ)
Context: Freaking Romance is a paranormal romance by Webtoon creator Snailords. It has elements of sci fi and fantasy, and several twists to popular tropes. It features an LGBTQ love triangle with a straight character (Zelan), a bisexual MC (Zylith) and a lesbian character (Verose).
Lesbian characters in fiction are often portrayed as 'masculine' and Verose almost fell into this trope. She never wore dresses, kept her hair short (and her appearance made me think she was a guy, sorry Verose), knew how to fight and was quite attractive to females in the Webtoon (she kind of gave me #badboy vibes at first).
But Verose also liked flowers, which is usually stereotyped as 'feminine' (if you're a dude who likes flowers, that's totally fine btw) and her name and face was still feminine. Also she felt squeamish around seeing Zylith's bare back in one episode (for some reason LGBTQ characters are often portrayed as hypersexual).
Still, Verose would probably be considered more 'masculine' than 'feminine' (according to sOCiETy btw, not me)
Zelan, on the other hand, follows another trope. (In fact, I think this trope will take off in 10 years. So if you enjoy this trope, definitely write a story with it. I can elaborate more on this if you want!). The SOFTBOI trope.
The softboi trope features a male (almost always a straight male) who is more 'feminine' than the hypermasculine #badboy trope. These characters are usually written by authors who want to redefine what 'being a man' means (shoutout to Aaron Ehasz- Aang from ATLA, Yaongi- Suho from True Beauty of course our beloved Snailords)
Zelan is soft-spoken, somewhat shy, and is known to cry watching Titanic- 'feminine' features according to sOcIety.
Verose was untrusting, experienced and feisty (#badboy trope). Zelan was sweet, caring and considerate (#goodgirl trope).
Verose chose brawns over brains (in the episode Zylith was harrassed, she immediately jumped to fight).
Zelan preferred brains over brawns (in the episode Zylith's dad came to take her cat away, Zelan used his wits to scare him off).
It was really interesting to see how these characters interacted with each other. Verose and Zelan were so different, and defiant of the common TV tropes associated with females and males. It's almost like Snailords was throwing shade at #badboy books.
If you enjoy bad boy books, that's fine. Like whatever you like, I just don't.
Which is why I LOVED Freaking Romance. I loved how Zelan was a guy with real insecurities, tears and the faith in 'true love'. His soft nature and caring attitude didn't make him any less of a man at all, in my opinion.
At the same time, Verose's strong mindedness and brooding nature didn't make her any less of a female either.
The platonic dynamic between these two characters is perhaps one of my favorite friendships in fiction. I loved how the series played out (I have some minor dislikes about it, but mostly, I loved the full thing).
I am curious to know what guys think of Zelan. I don't know if read any male readers' comments on Freaking Romance.
What are your thoughts on Freaking Romance, if you have read it?
