I Watched the Hating Game movie
Hello everyone.
I have watched the Hating Game movie and it actually surprised me. Long story short I liked the movie better than the book.
I still have a lot to say on it though. SPOILERS AHEAD from both the book and the movie.
But in case you're deciding to whether to watch the movie or not: Feel free to. 3/5 stars.
I don't think it's one of the best movies everrrr because I didn't really like the book much but it was a very good adaptation from a book.
If you want to hear me babbling about the movie and talk about changes from the book though, keep on reading! (and thank you thank you)
First of all I think the settings and the actors chosen for the movie was really great. I don't have much to criticize except perhaps the writing. I actually ENJOYED the movie? That was surprising because I rarely enjoy movies, especially adapations of books.
So the movie starts off with the line, 'I have a theory that hating someone feels disturbingly like falling in love with them.' Which was an interesting premise and made me read the whole book. The movie also kept the part about Lucy 'hating' Josh because she never saw him smile. (Although the actor for Josh DID smile sometimes? Maybe Lucy didn't catch it?)
Anyways, one day Josh makes Lucy kind of angry, and she ends up having a wet dream about him, and then she shows up to work wearing sEkUshI clothes? (In the movie though the attire was not as revealing as the book described it, so it made more sense for me because it was an OFFICE).
I also found the part where Lucy was telling Josh about her dream REALLY WEIRD. I mean do you tell your co-worker the gory details of your wet dreams uhhh-
Also Lucy does have some weird conversations with Josh. ('I tOld hIm I dOn't wEar PantsU'...)
Also same as the book, Lucy uses Daniel to show Josh that she actually does have a date which I didn't like, but it did show Lucy's personality flaws and the movie did show it as wrong. At least that's how I felt.
Then there was the elevator scene, MUCH better in the movie. Although there wasn't really verbal consent, the camerawork did a good job at showing non-verbal consent (ie, it showed they were both interested in kissing). Later when Lucy gets sick, she says the elevator kiss was hot. In the book, the elevator kiss was really disturbing because Josh forced himself on Lucy, but in the movie they made a good change.
Daniel was a much more active character here. I didn't like any of the characters, I felt pretty meh about them. But it was interesting to see the characters move the plot forward. I found it strange that when Lucy convinced Danny to skip his hangout with his bros to go on a date with her, but when Danny asked her she rejected him. But personality flaws, and I like flawed characters. This didn't make me dislike Lucy, I just felt indifferent about Lucy throughout.
Now, the CLOSET scene. It was pretty much the same. Josh refuses to grope Lucy unless she kisses Danny and admits Josh is the better kisser, blah blah blah.
So Lucy goes ahead, dates Danny, kisses him, doesn't like it much. In the movie Danny said 'wow!' but in the book he just wanted to be fwiEndS. In the movie Danny tells Lucy it's 'her loss' if she doesn't wanna date him, pretty casually. I felt indifferent about the changes.
Anywho, Lucy went to Josh's apartment, said he's the best kisser, etc etc, went to his bedroom, tried to hump him, got rejected. I mean girllll if you say 'let's have sex to get our sExUal eNErgY out?!!!' the guy might be confused whether you actually like him or not.
So Josh did the logical thing and said 'no hanky panky for you!' and Lucy said 'oh but you don't turn down sex you turn down a muffin!' which seems kind of reverse to me, but OK. (also not the exact dialogue btw).
Later Josh apologizes for rejecting Lucy? I didn't like that... Like why you apologizing for not wanting to devirginate her?
So afterwards Josh takes Lucy to her brother's wedding, saying 'You owe me.' The hotel they were supposed to stay in conveniently ran out of rooms so they had to share the same room. Lucy sees Josh in a towel and suddenly wants to make out, just like every other smutty wattpad book (No shade to smutty books by the way, I just prefer a solid emotional romance before steamier scenes I guess?) Lucy and Josh have a conversation where she says Josh is like an OCD stalker which was kinda creepy but after the book I didn't mind it much.
Anyways, WEDDING!
So aS yOu kNOW, Josh's brother married Josh's ex girlfriend.
But in the book they made it a really big scene where Lucy finds out the truth and feels bad about it. They completely cut that part out. Instead in the movie it wasn't a big deal to Lucy, she just rolled with it and supported Josh. In the movie they had a lot more chemistry than in the book in my opinion.
Towards the end, Josh exchanges words with the boss of their company, and Lucy hears the conversation. Josh says 'I'll have no problem beating her!' and Lucy tries her best to defeat Josh.
In the end Lucy gets the job. I liked that we actually saw Lucy train and fight for the job. (She suggested her publishing house make a site like Wattpad lol). And I also liked how the movie didn't hate on nice guys like the book did. (I mean #niceguys in wattpad and movies are kinda cringe but in real life nice people are great).
(Also remember when Josh painted his bedroom the color of Lucy's eyes? They kept that scene but just changed the color of Lucy's eyes. But after the book it didn't bother me.)
Overall, good movie. I couldn't get past 30 minutes of Twilight movies but I watched the whole of this one, so yeah.
I hated on the book so much but I'm actually praising the movie... people will think I'm bipolar. *cries*
Anyways, did you watch the Hating Game movie? What dd you think of it?
