Out of all the characters in Honkai Impact 3rd the one character that doesn't get that much attention is Sin Mal.

Sin was one of the orphans adopted by Cocolia and lived in Cocolia's Orphanage alongside Bronya, Seele, Rozaliya, and Liliya and to people who played Honkai Impact 3rd she may come off as a vicious monster for good reason I mean she was a straight psycho bully as she pushed Bronya down some stairs and broke her leg and even tried to rape Seele only for Veliona to pull an Uno reverse card and rapes her instead (albeit was mind rape but still rape nonetheless) she's mentioned a few times, she is a member of Anti-Entropy, but other than that we don't really see much of her so all we knew about Sin is that she's a complete monster. In a nutshell Sin is basically if Katsuki Bakugo and Himeko Toga both from My Hero Academia had a baby together. However what if I told you there was more to Sin Mal then meets the eye and that like most characters in Honkai she actually has a tragic backstory that shaped Sin into what she is now? Well for today's discussion we're going to look at the lore and dive deep into Sin Mal and find out what happened to her so without further ado let's get started.

Before we actually get into this I want to address something in order for my points to make sense, is that Sin's backstory in HI3 is the same one as Guns Girl Z aka Houkai Gakuen 2. The reason why I say this because I found 2 key evidence that points this out. First and foremost I found a scene in GGZ with Seele recalling her memories that directly references the Azure Waters manga.

And not to mention it turns out that the Azure Waters was originally intended to take place before the events of GGZ. Based on this it's safe to say that despite HI3 and GGZ being two separate narratives and stories we can say that some of the backstories that we all know of did remain mostly the same which is why it makes sense for Sin's backstory from GGZ to be relative the same in HI3. Now that we have that let's get started.

Now let's take a look at Sin's backstory. I have to give a huge shoutout to this person named BettyOfficial for finding some manga panels that explain her backstory.

But anyways Sin was once born into Russian noble families unfortunately she lost both of her parents at the hands of a robber and in retaliation Sin killed the robber in self defense but despite that she was blamed for her parents deaths and later adopted by abusive relatives.

So based on these panels here this is Sin telling her story to a toy rabbit and we can see how she was ostracized by society as a result of killing the robber. Right away this is REALLY messed up Sin was trying to defend herself and people called her a monster and a demon because of it. That's like if a young Bruce Wayne killed Joe Chill with a gunshot after he watched his parents Thomas and Martha Wayne get killed right in front of him and all of Gotham City called him a monster or a demon as a result of it. That's really messed up. But that's not the end there. Her adoptive parents treated her like shit but more on that later. As we continue you on one day while Sin was sleeping her house was broken into by another robber and it's not just any robber it was none other than Bronya Zaychik who at that point was still a child solider.

Now based on the panels this clearly means that Bronya and Sin have met before we can tell because at first sight Sin was immediately in love with Bronya and wanted to be her friend because despite living with relatives Sin was clearly lonely and needed someone to hang on to and be her pillar of support. During this moment the police arrived at the house due to Bronya having a 5 Star wanted level and Bronya attempted to protect Sin which cause Sin to get flashbacks from when her parents protected her.

This caused Sin to step in and protect Bronya.

This is definitely interesting because we now understand why Sin acts the way she acts because she saw Bronya as her savior. The two would later meet again at Cocolia's orphanage and wants to be friends with Bronya however Sin Mall calls her a monster.

Based on here we have a good idea on when this meeting takes place. In the Azure Waters manga we can see that Bronya was adopted in the orphanage in January 2012.

And later on we don't see Sin in the orphanage until August 2013

That's roughly 19 months of the time Bronya was in the orphanage so we do have a good idea that while she was in the orphanage the events that when Bronya called her a monster would've taken place between those 19 months. Back on topic Sin Mal was obviously hurt which actually explains why she bullied Bronya and Seele the way she did she was jealous of them, jealous that Bronya choose Seele and gave her more attention over her which is why she did the way she did. But it doesn't really stop there. After these events Sin's adoptive parents became even more abusive and decided to sell her to sex traffickers. And in retaliation she killed them and burned down her adoptive parents house.

Lastly she then meets up with Bronya at Cocolia's  orphanage gates and asked if if she is human now.

After that moment Cocolia eventually adopts her and thus the events of Azure Waters manga in August 2013 would take place. This is actually quite sad and disturbing because throughout her entire life Sin Mal had absolutely nobody ever since her biological family died she has suffered nothing from abuse by the people who are supposed to be protecting her and everyone called her a monster even Bronya. This backstory is very sad as it explains her sadist behavior and envy towards Bronya and Seele it was all due to her childhood trauma. For once we can't blame the Honkai for Sin Mal's early childhood days being utter Hell this makes me read back to that moment where Bronya doesn't tell Cocolia that Sin Mal broke her leg, while we can put it off as she doesn't want to her hurt for Seele's sake however we can actually take this a step further as after she rescues Seele after she kills sex traffickers, Bronya was called a monster the same way Sin was. In both cases despite the protecter protecting the vulnerable from adults (Officers and sex traffickers) the reward they get for their heroic actions is being called a monster form the same person they were trying to protect. Obviously the difference is that Bronya misunderstood Seele because Seele actually was calling Veliona her dark counterpart a monster and not Bronya, this obviously allows Bronya to be in Sin Mal's shoes as she now knows how Sin feels which is why she didn't fight back against Sin when she was breaking Bronya's leg nor did she tell on her, because Bronya now understands what it feels like to be called a monster and as such she feels guilty for what she did which I definitely think it does make sense in a way as deep down she might've realized that deep down Sin was not a monster but a little girl who was a victim of the dark and cruel world they both lived in, and we see further proof in the main story as Sin was taking care of people at the orphanage in Cocolia's absence and Bronya commented on how she didn't know Sin was good at taking care of kids and based on Cocolia instructing Bronya to help take care of the orphanage alongside Seele, Roza, and Lili it's likely that in between chapters of the main story they all were helping Sin take care of the orphanage. But perhaps the biggest piece of evidence that proves that Sin has likely redeemed herself is during the events of the Project Stigma arc in Chapter 35 as her name is listed as one of the many people who helped Kiana, Mei, and Bronya during the final battle against Kevin clearly indicating that she had some form of involvement at that time.

It might not be much but I think it's enough to prove that Sin Mal might've had a change of heart and likely put her bullying ways behind her and became a better person. I do hope that sometime in the future Hoyo gives Sin Mal a redemption arc just like they did in GGZ and maybe we see how during the events of Part 1 we see Sin during her time taking care of the orphanage in Cocolia's absence and maybe we see her reconcile her relationship with Bronya and Seele and they actually become friends in the end. I know that may seem unlikely since Part 2 is here but given that they released Journey Crisis where everyone was basically playing among us I wouldn't put it past the realm of possibilities to give us some animated short that tells us Sin's side of the story. Either way I don't care how they do It I would love to see a Sin Mal redemption arc.
