Top 5 underrated matchups
What's going on guy's it's Mario and Sonic fanboy and today we're going to be doing another top 5 which is Top 5 underrated matchups for this list we're going to be going over matchups that are either hated, downplayed, or overshadowed by other matchups and why they aren't as bad as people make them out to be. So anyways without further a do let's get to the list.
5. Shadow VS Zero (Sonic VS Mega Man)
This one was hated by many for many reasons, in fact I used to hate this one myself but as time grows on and after further research I came to the conclusion that this is in fact Zero's best matchup, while definitely not Shadow's best as I prefer Mewtwo but definitely a good alt. Realizing this I asked myself a question: WTF did this fight get so much hate while Meta Knight VS Zero got popular? That makes no sense we're talking about a fight that actually makes sense and matches Zero well and you have another where it doesn't. To prove this let's look at the connections.
The connections between Shadow and Zero is their both red and black fan favorite characters who are considered the ultimate creations, created by evil scientists (Professor Robotnik and Dr. Wily, respectively) being the second to their creator's previous creations (Biolizard and Bass, respectively) however because of their raw power and destructive capabilities they were feared and sealed away in a capsule never to be awakened until many years later and were studied by the scientists of the time they were awakened (Dr. Eggman and Dr. Cain, respectively) both have a dark, cold, and even violent personalities as both started off as villains all thanks to their creators who brainwashed them (Robotnik placed false memories of Maria's last with in Shadow causing him to want revenge on humanity and Wily placed a Maverick Virus in Zero that turns him violent and into his true self when the virus consumes him enough) both have worked with the series main villains at one point (Dr. Eggman and Sigma respectively) but eventually became the good guys, both also are close to a girl who tragically lost their lives (Maria Robotnik and Iris, respectively), are also the rivals/allies of a blue heroic protagonists (Sonic and Mega Man X, respectively), both eventually joined heroic organizations to fight evil (G.U.N and Maverick Hunters, respectively), and later are apart of teams (Team Dark and Resistance, respectively) both have abilities to stop time (Chaos Control and Dark Hold, respectively) and both can transform into super forms (Super Shadow and Black Zero, respectively) both at one point where sealed away again only to be awakened by a female character who eventually becomes their teammate (Rouge and Dr. Ciel, respectively) however upon awakening they lost all their memories and have to regain them back which leads to them staring in their own games as the protagonists (Shadow The Hedgehog 2005 game and Mega Man Zero series, respectively). Both have fought villains who look exactly like them who were sealed away long before the events of the series (Mephiles and Omega, respectively) both battle the final villains of their stories who are hellbent on destroying humanity (Black Doom and Dr. Weil, respectively) finally both have a similar space battle and fell from the sky where people thought they were dead (However whereas Shadow survived, Zero actually died).
How can people look at this matchup and say this is somehow less than Meta Knight VS Zero?Clearly as you can tell both Shadow and Zero have a shit ton of connections even more so than Meta Knight. What makes this more unique the the dynamic is that their both are evil creations of mad scientists sealed away due to their raw power. People downplay this matchup to overhype fights like Meta Knight VS Zero just so that they ignore the dynamic the two have when really the dynamic here makes perfect sense because Shadow and Zero are basically the same character. Zero's not some silent and mysterious warrior that people make him out to him out to be he's a ultimate creation who brainwashed to be evil by his creator but ultimately turned good thanks to the heroes, just like Shadow, he's not like Meta Knight at all and it's kind of bullshit that people make it seem like he is with some half-assed connections that aren't even current. Not to mention the animation potential is perfect especially when you take into account of the various weapons and power ups they would use and seeing their super forms collide would be much more devastating and fun to watch them two characters who can swing their swords as fast as possible. I think it's worth mentioning that people think Shadow VS Vincent Valentine is better for the same reasons why people think Meta Knight VS Zero is better and while the difference is that while that Mu is actually fine Vincent has better opponents. It's nice to see that this fight is getting some love now but it's still underrated and is cast aside so people can hype up Meta Knight VS Zero and so on.
4. Riku VS Meta Knight (Kingdom Hearts VS Kirby)
Speaking of Meta Knight this one was also hated by many however unlike the last one the people who dislike it have literally absolutely no reasons at all for hating this fight. Like the excuses I've seen is that "Oh Meta Knight is too small for Riku" or "It's only here just to get Meta Knight away from Zero" or "Riku is a trash character" when literally all of those are not true first of all even if Meta Knight is smaller than Riku size doesn't mean jack shit because we've had big characters fight small characters before secondly getting Meta Knight away from Zero is complete bullshit because that's the actual reason why Meta Knight VS Zero exist to get both characters away from their actual best via copied and pasted connections and dynamic. Riku and Meta Knight at least have mostly original connections that only apply to a few characters which is something Meta Knight VS Zero try to take away and thirdly who cares if Riku's a trash character? That's YOUR opinion which means nothing compared to facts. If these childish excuses are the reasons why you hate Riku VS Meta Knight and not give a legitimate reason as to why you hate it or dislike it than you have no right to even mention this let alone thing about it, I believe in Freedom of Speech but even that has it's limits if you take it too far. But anyways let's get to the connections.
The connections between Riku and Meta Knight is that their both the friends/rivals to the series main protagonists (Sora and Kirby, respectively) with impressive fast swinging swordsmanship skills, both walk the gray area of good and evil in an endless war of light vs darkness, both posses legendary swords (Keyblade and Galaxia, respectively) and were at one point seemingly loyal to a primary antagonist (Maleficent and King Dedede, respectively), but have since cut their ties with them after being summoned back to the light. Their primary goals have always been to compete with their rivals, grow stronger by any means necessary, and distance themselves from them in the past to protect them from any suffering any demise. Because of this both prefer to help the heroes in the shadows while acting as masked vigilantes (Riku blinded himself for a year and Meta Knight where's a mask) with a code up their arsenal. Both draw a purple and silver design in the customs and were dark robes/cape and posses light and darkness manipulation via their swords, are apart of organizations of light (Guardians of Light and Star Warriors, respectively) and aid the heroes into defeating larger threats (Nightmare and Xehanort, respectively) both also face two sets of dark doppelgängers (Riku Replica & Dark Riku and Galacta Knight & Dark Meta Knight, respectively). Both are often underestimated (Riku due to his lack of defensive magic but was able to develop his own defensive magic and Mega Knight due to his height but still was able to pack some fire power and speed). Both also posses abilities to create darkness like dimensions (Corridor of Darkness and Galaxia Darkness, respectively). Finally despite being villains at one point both redeemed themselves and dedicated themselves into helping the heroes.
So with this in mind despite the connections people somehow trash this for no reason while fights like Meta Knight VS Zero, Yoda VS Meta Knight, Riku VS Sasuke, and Riku VS Cecil get praise despite those fights either being trash, okay, and good alt at best. I swear Zero and Yoda are always the ones who have little to no/copy and paste connections with Meta Knight somehow get poplar request despite how garbage there are and while Sasuke would be a better matchup for Riku than Cecil both are either good alts or fine at best. People also downplay the animation and why it doesn't mash very well but this is far from truth given how the have abilities to manipulate both light and darkness it would definitely mesh think of this fight as the video game equivalent of Sasuke VS Hiei where one combatants ranged arsenal (Riku's magic and Sasuke's jutsu) can put the other on their toes not to mention their most noticeable abilities (illusions for Sasuke VS Hiei and darkness for Riku VS Meta Knight) there's so much you can use in this fight that would make it perfect that many people overlook. Luckily it's starting to get some praise in recent years. To this day I cannot understand how this fight is bellow Meta Knight VS Zero like I get people want a Nintendo VS Capcom themed fight (or Kirby VS Mega Man themed fight to be specific) I don't care if it's a legacy matchup or popular if that fight is lacking in connections, dynamic, and theme than it's not the best MU.
3. Sasuke VS Hiei (Naruto VS Yu Yu Hakusho)
Moving on to a matchup that already happened, despite this being his best matchup and therefore shouldn't come back people somehow still believe that Riku was Sasuke's best matchup. Like dude why? This matchup is unique in it's own way and I already explained why Riku has his best matchup previously so for this we'll explain why Hiei is in fact Sasuke's best matchup starting with the connections.
The connections between Sasuke and Hiei are that they are both anti-heroes with dark and fire-based powers, including creating black flames (Amaterasu and Dragon of the Darkness Flame, respectively), and both are skilled swordsmen. They both have abilities centered around their eyes (the Sharingan and Rinnegan for Sasuke, and the Jagan for Hiei), both had vengeful grudges against their family members (Sasuke wants revenge on Itachi for slaughtering the entire Uchiha clan and Hiei wants revenge against the ice women race for throwing him off their floating island as a baby), and both are renowned for their brooding personalities. Both also serve as the main rivals to their respective series protagonists (Naruto Uzumaki and Yusuke Urameshi, respectively) and have fought against godly and demonic entities. Both also have dragon attacks (Kirin and Dragon of the Darkness Flame, respectively). Finally both of their eye powers are centered around mental and illusion based attacks.
To add more detail on the connections Naruto's author Masashi Kishimoto was inspired off of Yu Yu Hakusho, with Sasuke's Sharingan being based off of Hiei's Jagan. How is Riku a best match for Sasuke when based off what is stated this was a clear legacy matchup? I think it's worth mentioning that yes Riku did turn to the dark side but the reason behind this was because he was possessed by Ansem, Sasuke by his own free will chose to join the dark side and become a villain just like Hiei. Riku would never do any of the stuff he did in the first Kingdom Hearts game if it wasn't for Ansem but Sasuke and Hiei would that's a big difference. People try to make it seem like Riku has more connections with Sasuke than Hiei but that's the furthest thing from the truth even if it is truth larger connections doesn't mean it's balanced the connections with Hiei work because of their similarities in vengeance, black flames, and eye powers. Sasuke already fought his best he doesn't need to come back so please just don't think about it.
2. Izuku Midoriya VS Atsuko Kagari (My Hero Academia VS Little Witch Academia)
Okay so I just want to say I am a huge fan of this matchup I've said this once and I'll say it again both are practically mirror images to the point where their almost exactly the same character so it makes sense to pair the two however people don't like this for obvious reasons fighting styles and both having better matchups. And personally I agree after some further research and even though I'm a fan of this matchup both have better opponents for Deku he has Gon Freecss from Hunter X Hunter and for Akko she has Wilbell Voll-Ersleid from Atelier Ayesha I used to think Akko is Deku's best but after some further research I can say that Wilbell is her best MU making this a good alt for both so we have Gon VS Deku and Wilbell VS Akko. There's also Rock Lee and Luz which both are also good too so I can understand why people don't like this matchup, but what I don't understand is how fights with opponents like Miles Morales Ms. Marvel get a lot of praise despite how terrible those fights are Hell even Harry Potter of all people gets overhyped despite how mid that is. But we'll go into more detail after we go over the connections.
The connections between Izuku and Atsuko is that their both crybaby, yet friendly and selfless anime protagonists from a series with the word "Academia" and who lived in a world where the supernatural is normal in which most people in the posses superpowers (Quirks and Magic, respectively) there's also factions in their worlds (Heroes & Villains and Wizards & Witches, respectively) but these two idolized the greatest and best of the best heroic figures of all time at a very young age (All Might and Shiny Chariot, respectively) both have big dreams to be like them and be the greatest in the world and put a smile on people's faces however they are born considered powerless and normal (Izuku was Quirkless and Atsuko wasn't born in a witch family) because of this they suffered constant bullying from others, but they eventually were able to weld the same powers as their idols (One For All and Shiny Rod, respectively) after that they enrolled in the same schools as their idols (U.A. High School and Luna Nova Magical Academy, respectively) their idols eventually became their mentors and parental figures to them and they are usually called by their nicknames (Deku and Akko, respectively) both also have blonde haired rivals who pick on them but eventually became friends and understand as they look up to the same idol (Katsuki Bakugo and Diana Cavendish, respectively) both also have different sets of powers (Six Previous One For All users' quirks and Seven Words of Arcturus, respectively), finally both have a drive of never giving up no matter the cost and helping others with a smile on their face.
What I mentioned here doesn't even scratch the surface they have so much in common it's not even funny as they both have so much similarities their mirror images of each other but anyways I think the main reason why people don't like it is because of both Deku and Akko's fighting style which to be fair is a value criticism even I think that both of their fighting styles is perfect but honestly I prefer that over Deku and Ms. Marvel's fighting like Ms. Marvel is dead ass a combination that f Ms. Fantastic, Elongated Man, and Luffy with the ability to straight her body meanwhile Deku has versatile of abilities and six quirks, at least Akko has some versatile abilities and can use 7 words to unleash her strongest attack but all Ms. Marvel has is stretchy abilities... that's it. As for Miles sure both him and Deku have whipping and danger sensing but outside of that though I literally see absolutely nothing else like Deku can float/fly in the air and not to mention Fa Jin which gives him some form of martial arts how would that work with someone who can climb on walls shoot webs and sense danger not to mention has electric powers personally it's just boring. And as for Harry Potter...... Bro. Literally all he has is torture, stunning, and instant kill. How does this work for Akko's fighting style who can manipulate the elements, gravity, can take the form of an archer, etc? Like I was told that there are some things Harry has to work with but I literally saw absolutely nothing he's just a guy with a tiny wand going up against a girl with a real op wand and a rod, at least Draco Malfoy VS Diana Cavendish has more of a reason to exist. If you want matchups that have better fighting styles than I suggest their best Gon VS Deku and Wilbell VS Akko of their other good alts Deku VS Rock Lee and Akko VS Luz all these fights have better styles that work well but other than that though despite their fighting styles what Deku and Akko definitely has is dynamic due to it being about two powerless teens who grew up in a world of superpowers and want to put a smile on people's faces. Their fighting styles are not perfect but that's not all that matters as the connections and dynamic make up for it. Is there fighting style for the animation perfect? No. But animation doesn't mean it's all that matters. Is this the best matchup for both? No it's a good alt for both as they have better and even then a good alt is also great. Either way it's not as bad as people make it out to be and certainly not as bad as people make it out to be.
Before we get to my number one pick here are some honorable mentions
Honorable mentions
Edward Elric VS Tanjiro Kamado (Fullmetal Alchemist VS Demon Slayer)
Too be fair though I used to think this is best MU for both but not anymore. That being said it's not as bad as people make it out to be sure alchemy vs breathing is meh but honestly I prefer that than opponents like Aang, Doom Slayer, or characters who have absolutely zero connections, dynamic, and animation potential with these two.
Aqua VS Jeanne d'Arc (Kingdom Hearts VS Fate)
The reason why I consider this underrated was because this overrated is because it's overshadowed by other of Aqua's matchups such as Lucina and Ahsoka however after further research this is clearly Aqua's best MU.
Ichigo VS Yusuke (Bleach VS Yu Yu Hakusho)
People say Naruto is Ichigo's best matchup but they overhype it so much that it gets overrated and boring. I think Yusuke is a perfect fit for Ichigo because the connections and dynamic are so similar. Also a little fun fact the author of Bleach, Tite Kubo took inspiration from Yu Yu Hakusho so that's clearly something. Why do people hype up Naruto VS Ichigo when they don't realize the reason why Bleach existed?
Trunks VS Silver (Dragon Ball VS Sonic)
I used to dislike this fight but after looking into, this is clearly the Dragon Ball VS Sonic fight we truly need. Both characters are clearly similar so despite the hate for every single Dragon Ball VS Sonic fight in existence clearly this doesn't deserve the hate it gets.
Galacta Knight VS Omega (Kirby VS Mega Man)
People have been begging for a Nintendo VS Capcom fight more specifically a Kirby VS Mega Man fight for the longest time but they don't deserve they realized that this one or right in front of them this whole time. Why does Meta Knight VS Zero get popular but not this? That doesn't seem fair. Galacta Knight VS Omega is CLEARLY the Kirby VS Mega Man/Nintendo VS Capcom fight we need, not Meta Knight VS Zero as both have better.
Now let's get to my number one pick.
Link VS Sora (Legend of Zelda VS Kingdom Hearts)
Alright so I've saved the best for last Link VS Sora my second favorite matchup of all time next to Mario VS Sonic. This matchup is surprisingly underrated as someone who loved this matchup before I started watching Death Battle I can never understand why because from what I've seen a lot of people actually liked this matchup but nowadays it turns out to be a fucking lie and that Link VS Cloud and Sora VS Pit is better. First off I get Link VS Cloud like I love that matchup as well equally but the only reason why Sora VS Pit exists is too be a big clone of other matchups Link VS Sora, Link VS Cloud, and Sora VS Rex that's it. Hell it's even a clone of Mario VS Link. Like I swear hardcore Death Battle fans will hype up Sora VS Pit so hard that us casual fans lose some braincells not understanding why. And before someone says it, I don't care if it's popular or if it was requested that's no excuse for hyping an overrated matchup. But anyways let's start things off with connections shall we?
The connections between Link and Sora is that both are teenagers who started off growing up in humble lands (Kokiri Forest and Destiny Islands, respectively), they were sleeping until destiny came in to disrupt while simultaneously granting their wish for the outside realms. They came across many darknesses on their path, some minuscule some massive but then they met a girl considered a princess and later considered the love interest (Zelda and Kairi, respectively) whom they had to save from villains of darkness (Ganondorf and Xehanort, respectively), they also are the chosen ones to weld swords of light (Master Sword and Keyblade, respectively) making them one of the most iconic video game swordsman in video game history in the years the have aged they have been tasked to save their worlds from threats of darkness accompanied by some friends (Navi and Donald & Goofy, respectively), and have beaten major villains in their own homes. Both had to say their goodbyes to the princesses they were close to at one point but will eventually see them again. Both have insane amounts of magic and arsenal, but in away they also suffered from amnesia at one point as they lost their memories and had to work hard to get them back throughout their journeys both characters have attempted to stop their main villains from using dangerous tools for domination (Triforce and Kingdom Hearts, respectively). After a long perilous journey both face the ultimate consequence making them a wondering spirit whose body is either old and battered or frozen solid and their spirits wanders one with so many regrets, the other so much give others.
I know somebody's going to say most of this applies to people like Pit but really Link VS Sora was a much older matchup like Sora VS Pit only existed when Kid Icarus: Uprising came out that's literally it there's nothing legacy about plus Pit's military weapon doesn't mesh well with Sora's magic it just makes the fight look generic and boring at least with Link he has a lot of things that can mesh well with Sora and while I can agree about both somewhat having better with Cloud and Rex, Pit fighting Sora is just straight up blasphemy, the connections are weak, there's no dynamic, and it's basically Omni-Man VS Homelander before it even came out. I don't understand how Link VS Sora meanwhile Link VS Cloud and Sora VS Pit gets very VERY overhyped and I like Link VS Cloud but that fight is overrated as fuck people have been overhyping it too much I don't care how popular it is, it's not as godly as people make it out to be. I'll give Sora VS Pit credit for being better than Sora VS LeBron but if you ignore that fight, it's clear that Pit is Sora's WORST matchup and thank god Pit has better.
But anyways that's it for the list thank you so much for reading and I will see you all next time. Peace.
