Why The Last Airbender is terrible
What's up everyone and today we're going to be talking about something I've been wanting to talk about and that is Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Now for those of you who don't I am a huge fan of the series every since December 2018 and I loved that show. I've watched it at least three times (I'm doing it again the fourth time.) and every time I watch it I was brought to this amazing world in the show. I even enjoyed the sequel series The Legend of Korra in May 2019. Now as you can tell by the title of this chapter we're going to be talking about the live action move of the show called The Last Airbender.
And let me tell you this: IT SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!!!!!!! And that's why today I'm going to give you an explanation as to why it sucks. So without further ado let's begin.
Quick heads up: Spoilers alert if you haven't seen the film yet.
This film was directed by M Night Shyamalan now I'm sure he has done some decent work before but even he has some downsides and this would probably be one of the most downsides he's ever done he literally disrespected so many things like the pronunciation they say Aang's name wrong, Sokka's name wrong and Iroh's name wrong. I can go on and on and talk about more pronunciations like Avatar and Agni Kai if I want too because that's completely outright disrespectful to the original series. Okay this film was based off of Book 1: Water from the first season of the series and originally they planned to make all three books however after this film failed to deliver that idea was sliced into pieces.
Now let's move on to the characters. I've gotten to know many of the characters in the show especially the main characters but in the film we don't have the same characters we had in the show. Let's start with Aang the show's main protagonist.
Aang is a selfless, brave, wise, and heroic kid despite his young age sure he can be playful at times but Aang is still heroic in the film however Aang is the complete opposite from his show's counterpart. For starters not only does he look like a emotionless kid who's a scared little boy. You want an example? Let's compare the movie and the show like the scene where Zuko and his men comes to the Southern Water Tribe.
In this scene Zuko demands the villagers to tell him where Aang is before threatening them by shooting fire at them Aang of course comes in and saves the day and fights Zuko, however once he saw the danger that the villagers are in because of their fight, Aang surrenders to Zuko and is captured but not before telling Katara and Sokka everything will be okay and tells them to take care of Appa when he gets back knowing full well he will easily escape.
In the film Zuko and his men comes to the Tribe and Aang hides in a tent and only comes out when he's forced to by Zuko's men and Zuko threats Aang to burn down the village if he doesn't come with him. And then the firebenders shoot at the villagers afterwards.
You see the difference? So Aang is forced to come out like a scared little kid and while being threatened by Zuko to burn the village down. Zuko sets the terms and Aang just does what he says. In the show Aang battles Zuko to protect the people and see the danger their in then the selfless and heroic Aang says to Zuko he'll surrender and go with him willingly if he leaves the village alone which Zuko agrees. Aang sets the terms and Zuko does what he says. The most important part about this scene is Aang realizing that fighting will put the villagers in more danger than their already in. In the film the firebenders did put the villagers in danger however this happened after Aang left with Zuko making that scene pointless.
One of the main problems of this film is because they don't how to combine action with dialogue most of the time is all talking and no action and all action and no talking. Had they combine these things and put the villagers in danger with Aang and Zuko's conversation it could work because that would be the reason why Aang would want to go with Zuko.
Now for the scene where Zhao talks to Aang while the Avatar is captured Aang isn't scared telling Zhao that he would fight him with his hands behind his back and as Zhao continues to talk smack Aang blows him straight towards the wall showing that even captured he's still capable.
In the film Zhao talks smack to Aang and the latter doesn't talk back or fight back. Really Aang you're just gonna sit there and let Zhao talk to you like that? This right there is disrespectful to Aang's character.
As for the scene where Aang talks to Katara about running away, Aang lies to Katara about being the Avatar and makes a cringe face afterwards knowing that he screwed up he's still disappointed in letting his people down and the entire world down.
In the film Aang talks about running away and with a smile on his face talking about it like it's nothing

What is he All Might? Might Guy? (At least they have a frown on their face in many ascensions like in their fights against major villains like All For One and Madara Uchiha.) That's clearly not what Aang is like in the show because letting the whole world down it is a insecurity that we see throughout the remainder of the series. Plus later in the film Aang ran away again. I know that Aang had to go off on his own for the Blue Spirit arc but in the show the only reason why he left was because Katara and Sokka are sick and he wanted to help. Aang would never willingly leave Katara and Sokka behind especially after feeling guilty of running away the first. So Aang being selfish and having to leave is the best way to go out on his own! they just did some lazy writing and speaking of arcs that's something I'll get into later on.
Also in the show we see Aang go into the Avatar State and show us his true power. But in the film all we see is a scared kid who's being bossed around rather than see his true power. Katara and Sokka also never learned his name let alone that he's the Avatar (That is until we take a separate scene where their grandmother tells them that he's the Avatar, rather then learning about it in the action scene like in the show.) and the most part is that Aang never said that he really is the Last Airbender which is the tile of the film without the Avatar part.
Now let's talk about Zuko. Zuko is one of the best characters in the show and one of my favorites taking number 3 on my spot, but look at him in the film like the scene where Aang escapes Zuko's ship and again time to compare the movie and the show. Starting with the movie this time around.
In the film after Aang takes out a few firebenders Aang pulls out his glider and prepares to escape and Zuko says "Don't move you have nowhere to run." Aang flies away anyway, Zuko doesn't do a thing to stop him and whines to Iroh while Aang escapes with Katara and Sokka. Now this scene is completely stupid and I'll explain why in a minute after we compare that to the show.
In the show Zuko battles Aang one on one to which Aang won and just as Aang was about to fly away on his glider, Zuko literally jumps off the top of his ship and pulls him down, Aang goes into the Avatar State and knocks Zuko off his ship but the prince manages to hang on and knocked down again and is back up thanks to Iroh and orders his uncle to help shoot them down but Aang deflects their attack and knocks it to a ice wall damaging Zuko's ship in the process with no way of escaping while the Avatar escapes with Katara and Sokka.
Now do you see what's the difference? I do. One the scene is short in the movie and two Zuko tells Aang he has nowhere to run.
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
First of all you're talking to a character who can fly that's like me telling The Flash he has nowhere to run on an open field and he just ran off anyway so that makes no sense. Second Zuko would never just stand there and watch Aang escape because in the show he fought until the very end and never gave up until the ship was damaged. They should've had Zuko order the firebenders to shoot them down. BUT NO THEY DIDN'T!! WHY? Oh I know why: BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO COMBINE ACTION AND DIALOGUE!!! It's terrible writing. They should've just had Zuko jump of the ship and try to pull Aang down, sure he may land in the water but that still shows that Zuko doesn't give up that's the beauty of Zuko's character which is why I along with other fans love him especially in Book 3.
Let's talk about his uncle Iroh to see how they did his character by you guessed it: By comparing this show to the movie starting with near the end of Book 1 during the Final Battle.
In the show Iroh tells Zuko that he sees Zuko as his own son, especially after his real son died to which Zuko says "I know, uncle." Than he goes on and being a nagging parent as Zuko leaves to capture Aang.
In the film Iroh starts being nagging parent and Zuko says "I know, uncle."
You see the difference? Well you see Iroh showed Zuko that he sees him as his own and starts nagging like a parent him in the to prove his point in the show and in the film Iroh never said that only the nagging parent parent making the "I know, uncle." Line completely pointless.
Another scene we have is when Zhao picks up and kills the spirit. In the show after Zhao picks up the spirt Iroh comes in and threatens Zhao with so much passion showing that Iroh will protect the spirt with all his might. But despite his warnings Zhao kills the spirt anyway.
In the film Iroh stands next to Zhao as he picks up the spirt and Iroh warns him by saying don't and Zhao kills the spirt anyway despite being in arms reach.
See the difference? Well in the film Iroh was LITERALLY right next to Zhao as he picks up the spirt and does nothing and warns him by simply saying don't.
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
Iroh from the show would've taken Zhao down before he even has the chance to kill it let alone pick it up. They should've have Iroh tackle Zhao and pull him away from the spirt than have Zhao break free from Iroh's grasp grab the spirit THAN Iroh threatened with all his might AND THAN Zhao kills the spirt.
Moving on we have Sokka. Now at first I didn't really like Sokka especially in like the first two episodes however as I watch the show progress I found out that Sokka is a badass. And despite his goofy personality Sokka is the the leader who always comes up with the best plans Team Avatar has in the series. But in the film.... Not so much. You wanna why? Time to compare scenes form the show and movie.
Quick heads up: He didn't use his boomerang which is main weapon in the film. He also never fought anyone in the film (from what I remember).
First is the seen where Aang is captured by Zuko. In the show Katara tells Sokka that they have to rescue Aang and guess what his response was: "Katara are you gonna talk all day or are you coming with me?" He's already to go and save Aang.
In the film Sokka refuses to go help Aang and when Katara asks what would he do if they took her away guess what his response was: "I'd kill them all."
See the difference they made Sokka worried and hasten when in the show he's ready to go. They also made him look like a bruiting guy rather than a goofy guy just look at this quote Sokka say in the movie "I'd kill them all."
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
That line kinda reminds me of Sasuke Uchiha from when he wanted to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village after figuring out the truth about his brother Itachi. That's what Sokka is literally like in the film I mean he'll destroy the Fire Nation if something happens to Katara. 1. That's not how Sokka talks 2. He would never say anything like that and 3. Sokka would've agreed with Katara to help Aang.
Look at all the disrespect of the characters Shyamalan has it's like he didn't like the characters at all. I can go on and on about the characters he disrespected like Katara who sounds like an airhead.
Okay now let's move on to the bending. It's really terrible like they have like 6 earthbenders bend one tiny rock. Don't believe me watch this clip.

Me:

What?! That's how earthbending works in the film? Speaking of earthbending why are all the prisoners imprisoned on LAND next to rocks? Literally all the earthbenders can just crush the outnumbered firebenders at any point I can totally see someone plotting to smash them by taking out the fire. Speaking of fire, firebenders have to bend actual fire that's already pre-existing in front of them. That's how water, earth, and airbending works sure but firebenders can make fire at will? Why are they just changing the rules form the original source material? It should also be noted that with the rules of firebending in the film the earthbenders can just crush the fire candidate so the firebenders won't have anything to bend.
Also I didn't like how Shyamalan had to add as much as he can without adding in all important things. I understand that putting 20 episodes into 1 hour of filming is difficult but leaving out important things like the Kyoshi Warriors, Jet, the one firebender who couldn't teach Aang firebending, Avatar Roku etc. those all have played and important role in the show later on. Not only is Shyamalan disrespecting the characters but also leaving out important things and adding brand new stuff. That's so much disrespect from the original source material why in the world would leave out so many story arcs sure arcs like the Kyoshi Warriors arc was in a one time episode but they played an important role later on in the show (especially Suki). If you're gonna make a film based on the original source material at least add all of the important things that play a huge role later on in the story.
As for the action scenes it's really bad in fact it's so bad that when it comes to Aang vs Edward Elric. Ed would SLAP the mess out of movie Aang.
Everything is really slow passed with or without the slow motion the CGI is terrible. And the action scenes are bad. Speaking of which that's what the film is heavily relied on and they don't know how actions scenes work because nearly every action is all done in one shot. It's a great technique when done right however it's meant for dialogue not for action. And while we're on the subject of action scenes I'm about to give you examples on how action scenes work. So watch these two actions scenes to see which one did it right by cutting from shot to shot. So which one did better? This one?

Or this one?
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
I for one think the second one in Avenger: Infinity War did a better job in this action than the first one and for those of you who who wanna prove me wrong I'd like to see you try. This is perfect because not only do we action from far away, close up but we also see the character's face's and emotions (which is another problem that The Last Airbender has.) like with Thanos being pissed off after being crushed or with Iron Man saying it was a peace of cake. Shyamalan needs to learn when to use filmmaking techniques and when not to use them.
Also the acting and the casting choice is REALLY terrible. The characters like the ones from Water Tribe their all browned skin but in the film their all completely white-washed. I understand casting people with skills rather than race but the cast in this film is terrible.
This movie is so COMPLETELY garbage so garbage it's pretty much a whole different the original Avatar: The Last Airbender. Also I didn't like how they said Sozin's Comet is coming in 3 years rather than by summer's end but it's pointless because all the other films were cancelled, it's probably best that the films were cancelled because I can hardly image what Shyamalan would do to characters like Toph and Azula their names would probably be mispronounced on purpose and their character arcs wouldn't be the same as they were in the show plus I'm sure they'll out many important things in the show. I hope I've beaten this dead horse. Let's hope that Netflix does a better job than Shyamalan.
Thank you guys so much for reading let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below also I just started on Banjo and Kazooie's analysis for Banjo and Kazooie vs Yooka and Leylee and also be sure to check out my new story Mario and Sonic: Dimensional Chaos If you have not I have four chapters published so far.
But that's all for now and I'll see you all later.
