"Stop! Right there, hands in the air."
Barry turned, surprise on his face.
Then he realized that the cop wasn't talking to him.
He almost kept walking until he noticed that the cop was pointing his gun at a child.
He ran toward the cop without thinking and ripped the gun away.
As soon as the gun hit the floor, Barry headed toward the child, who was shaking.
"What's your name?" Barry asked the child.
But for some reason, the child seemed reluctant.
Then the cop recovered.
"You are not allowed to do that, sir! Please bring the child and come with me."
See, Barry had been watching the kid. Not stalking, just seeing him out of the corner of his eye.
So he knew that the kid had done nothing wrong.
"What did this child do exactly?" Barry asked. If the cop refused to answer his question, then he would pull out his badge.
"I don't have to explain myself to you."
Barry glared at the man.
As he pulled out his badge, he became aware of all the people surrounding him.
He ignored them.
"Well, I can report you to my boss or yours if you don't, so why don't you answer the question?" Barry suggested sarcastically.
The cop shifted.
"That-that trans kid kissed a person of the same gender."
Barry stared at him, an anger he didn't know he possessed rising up.
"So, you tried to arrest a child because he or she might have been kissing someone of the same gender?"
The cop glared at him.
"Wow. And I thought Joe was homophobic," Barry muttered as he pulled the child toward him and picked them up.
He carried the child away from the bad cop and set them down.
"Where are your parents?" Barry asked.
The child was still shaking.
"M-my babysitter br-brought me here."
Barry sighed.
"Where is your babysitter?"
"O-over there." The child pointed over to a nearby coffee shop.
"Here." Barry held his hand out for the child to take.
As they walked the short distance, Barry almost missed it when the child whispered, "My name is Riley."
